Definitions
- This invention relates to container bags and in particular relates to container bags for carrying loads in the range 0.5 - 2 tonnes and known as flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC's).
- FIBC's flexible intermediate bulk containers
- FIBC Flexible intermediate bulk containers are increasingly employed in cargo handling and transporting situations, especially for the carriage of particulate or pulverulent material.
- a typical FIBC will be manufactured from a fabric woven from a polyolefin tape and have integral lifting loops. Examples of such containers are described in our UK patent number 1591091.
- FIBC's have to meet various national and international safety standards, for example it is normal to require a 5:1 safety ratio, that is an FIBC rated at 1 tonne should not break under loads of less than 5 tonnes.
- FIBC provided with a woven inner lining characterised in that both the body and lining have conductive threads woven into the fabric and in that the liner and the body fabric are connected to one another electrically.
- conductive threads in an FIBC fabric has been proposed previously in bags not having liners.
- Such FIBC's may also have conductive threads integrally with, for example woven into, the fabric from which the lifting loops are formed so that when the bag is lifted by, for example, a fork lift truck, the loops and hence the bag body are earthed by the tines of the fork lift truck.
- the present invention seeks to provide an FIBC improved in this respect.
- a container bag which comprises a body of flexible material and lifting loops, in which both the body and the loops contain conductive yarns, characterised in that a patch of conductive fabric is placed between the legs of the lifting loop and the bag body before the lifting loops are secured in place.
- the lifting loops are normally stitched to the bag body, often using a "box and cross" stitch pattern, to give the necessary mechanical strength.
- a "box and cross" stitch pattern to give the necessary mechanical strength.
- this does not always result in sufficient electrical contact between the conductive yarns in the bag body and those in the lifting loops.
- Employing the conductive patch of the invention overcomes this problem.
- the patch can be manufactured of conductive tape, conductive extruded film, non- woven conductive material, for example, felt or needle punched fabric, or conductive ribbon.
- conductive tape especially that available as "Statex" tape.
- a conductive tape or ribbon is employed which is trapped between the loop and the bag body and extends to the top seam of the bag body where it is sewn into the seam. This gives a particularly good electrical contact.
- the fabric which the FIBC of the invention is formed may be a conventional fabric for use in this type of container bag and may be woven from polyethylene or polypropylene tape yarns, together with conductive yarns.
- at least the side walls of the container bag are made from a fabric having reinforced zones or areas of interwoven reinforcing yarns, for example as disclosed in our UK patent number 1591091. Where such reinforcing areas are provided then they may be as described in that patent and may be formed of interwoven threads of high tensile strength reinforcing yarns such as polyamide, polyester or twisted or fibrillated polypropylene.
- the lifting loops are attached to such reinforced areas.
- the FIBC may be "underslung" where the lifting loops extend down the side walls and under the base of the container body.
- the lifting loops will preferably be of a woven webbing of synthetic yarns, for instance of the type used for car seat belts, for example polyamide or polyester yarns, or may be ropes or hawse of suitable strength.
- the lifting loops will also contain conductive yarn, preferably interwoven therewith.
- the interwoven conductive threads may for example be threads of spun metallised yarn woven into the body fabric or the loop fabric at regular intervals. This yam will "give" with the body fabric under the stresses of filling and handling whereas metallic wires might break.
- the container bag of the invention may be fitted with a top and/or a filling spout as well as a discharge spout as is conventional in the FIBC art.
- FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of an FIBC in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 2 is a partial diagrammatic view of the top portion of the FIBC of figure 1 showing the attachment of the lifting loop.
- an FIBC generally designated 10 has side walls 12 and a base 14.
- the side walls are attached to one another by stitched seams 16.
- a lifting loop 18 stitched to its respective side wall 12 at 20.
- the attachment 20 is shown in greater detail in figure 2.
- the leg 22 of the lifting loop 18 is attached to the respective side wall 12 by a number of "box and cross" pattern stitches 24.
- a patch in the form of a ribbon 26 of conductive tape for example "Statex" tape.
- the fabric of the walls contains conductive threads as known per se.
- the FIBC 10 is provided with a top seam 28 which also contains "Statex" type conductive tape 30.
- the tail end 32 of the ribbon of tape 26 is brought into contact with the conductive tape 30 in the top seam 28, which enhances the electrical contact between the various conductive elements. It has been found that this gives a particularly good electrical contact between the wall fabric and the lifting loops as the flat conductive tapes give a good surface to surface electrical contact.
- the webbing forming the lifting loops 18 has conductive yams woven with long floats on both top and underside to bring the conductive yams to the surface where they can contact the patch 26.
- the FIBC of the invention gives very good antistatic properties and excellent electrical contact between the loops and the bag body.
