Definitions

  • the invention relates to a coffin for burying a corpse.
  • the invention also relates to a method for manufacturing such a coffin.
  • Coffins for burying a corpse are known per se.
  • Such coffins are generally made of straight and/or optionally curved wooden boards and other building materials, such as plywood and fiber plate. These building materials are, for instance, composed by means of nails, screws, plugs and/or glue to form the coffin.
  • the coffin according to the invention is characterized in that the bottom and the standing side walls of the coffin are made at least substantially of compressed material which is substantially compressed starch.
  • Such a coffin can be manufactured in an economically very advantageous manner.
  • Starch is a relatively cheap material.
  • the compression of the material can be carried out very rapidly, for instance, by means of a press. The result is that the manufacture of the coffin according to the invention is only a little labor- intensive.
  • starch is biodegradable within a short time.
  • German laid-open application 42 18 566 also discloses moldings, with coffins being mentioned by way of example, of biodegradable material.
  • the biodegradable material referred to is sewage sludge, to which a binding agent may optionally be added.
  • Suitable binding agents which are mentioned, are gypsum and degradable polymers, such as polyvinyl alcohol, polycaprolactone, and thermoplastic starch. That thermoplastic starch can also fully take over the role of sewage sludge, is nowhere described or suggested.
  • Dutch patent 1008231 which is not a prior publication, discloses coffins produced in one piece, which are made of biopolymers.
  • the base material biopolymers is nowhere defined or illustrated.
  • the biopolymers are thermoplastically processed using a blowing agent, which gives foam-like products.
  • starch is used as biopolymer, which, true, can be thermoplastically processed, but not into a foam-like product.
  • the method for manufacturing a coffin according to the invention is characterized in that the material is compressed which at least substantially comprises starch for manufacturing the bottom and the standing side walls. In particular, it holds that the bottom and the standing side walls are made in one piece.
  • the manufacture of the bottom and the standing side walls in one piece can be carried out in one compressing method step.
  • the press may then comprise two molds which are pressed towards each other to compress the material.
  • the first mold of the two molds will then form the contours of the outer walls of the coffin, while the second mold of the two molds forms the contours of the inner walls of the coffin.
  • the material may also comprise a binding agent.
  • This binding agent may, for instance, be xanthane gum, bone meal, a gel-like glue, a hot melt and/or a cold melt. It is explicitly mentioned that mixtures of these binding agents may be used as well.
  • the second mold is partly moved into the first mold by means of the press. Subsequently, the space formed between the second and the first mold is filled, for instance, filled up or filled through nozzles, with the above material. Then the second mold is pressed further into the first mold by means of the press. Thus the material will be compressed. The compression of the material will generally also involve a temperature rise of the material.
  • This temperature rise may, for instance, have the result that the binding agent, which, for instance, forms the material together with the starch, is activated.
  • the hot melt will be activated by the temperature rise due to the compression.
  • the two molds are moved apart again by means of the press, and the thus formed bottom with the standing side walls of the coffin can be removed from the press.
  • the bottom and the standing side walls are made in one piece by only one compressing method step.
  • the thermoplastic starch may also be brought into an injection mold and be brought above the gelatination temperature by supplying heat.
  • a cover of the coffin may also be made by compressing the above material.
  • a further advantage of the method for manufacturing a coffin is that the coffin is made of a perfectly ecologically sound material. When the coffin is buried, it will disintegrate rather rapidly as a result of moisture. The starch thus finding its way in the earth is very ecologically sound and will rapidly be discharged by rain showers and the like.
  • a binding agent may consist of an ecologically sound material as well, such as, for instance, the above-mentioned bone meal.
  • the molds are provided with a relief for forming a print in an outer and/or inner surface of the coffin during the compression of the material.
  • This print may, for instance, have the structure of a wood grain.
  • the material used for the manufacture of the coffin may, for instance, consist 75-98 weight percent, of starch. Besides, the material may consist 2-25 weight percent of the above binding agent.
  • thermoplastic starch offered by the firm of Avebe under the name of Paragon® and described in NL-A-9100590 and WO-A-91/12186, which documents are inserted herein by reference for the description of the starch to be possibly used, is very suitable.
  • the invention therefore has the advantage that the coffin can be manufactured very advantageously because the manufacturing process is little labor-intensive (the bottom and the standing side walls are made by means of one pressing movement) and because the employed material is relatively cheap. Besides, the coffin is thus made of an ecologically sound material, which, in use, is not detrimental to the environment.
  • the coffin may of course also be provided with other materials, such as metal handles, fastening means for the cover, etc. It is also possible to provide the coffin with, for instance, a coating which may or may not be colored and/or transparent. It is also conceivable that other types of binding agents are used. It is also possible that, before the material is compressed, moisture is added to the material. During the compression, this moisture will also activate binding properties of the starch itself. During the compression, first of all a gelatination of the starch occurs. Thus a so-called gel is formed.
