- This invention relates to the capture of electronic signatures and the security of transactions. More specifically, this invention relates to the capture of electronic signatures authorizing transactions and to the storage and retrieval of such electronic signatures as proof of the transactions.
- Electronic cash registers, no-frills card-swipe electronic- funds-transfer units and signature-capture platforms dominate the approximately eight million point-of-sale (POS) locations in the United States. At these POS locations, a consumer pays presenting cash, a check, a debit or credit card, an electronic-funds transfer card (automated-teller-machine card) or a smart card.

Abstract
L'invention porte sur un procédé et un appareil de saisie d'une signature électronique à l'aide d'un langage de balisage. Dans une variante, le procédé consiste à disposer un bloc à effleurement au-dessus et à côté d'un écran, puis à présenter un langage de balisage sur ledit écran. Simultanément avec la présentation, le procédé recueille une signature à l'aide du bloc à effleurement. Plus particulièrement, le bloc à effleurement peut être placé au-dessus et à côté de l'écran et s'étendre moins que l'écran selon une dimension plane de l'écran, tandis que la présentation peut comporter une page de langage de balisage (par exemple une page en hypertexte) sur l'écran en réservant une partie de la page pour y apposer une signature. Une partie de la zone réservée peut se trouver sous une partie du bloc à effleurement, et évidemment avoir la même longueur. Dans une autre variante, la saisie consiste à apposer une signature dans la zone réservée.
