Description
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR POSITIONING CARCASSES AND CARCASS PARTS OF LARGE ANIMALS SUCH AS P IGS AND CATTLE
The invention relates to an apparatus for positioning suspending members which are displaceable along a conveyor and which are adapted to carry carcasses or carcass parts of large animals such as pigs and cattle, comprising: a conveyor, displaceable suspending members engaging on the conveyor, and engaging means engaging on the suspending members for placing respectively holding the suspending members in a desired position. The invention also relates to a method for positioning suspending members which are displaceable along a conveyor and adapted to carry carcasses or carcass parts of large animals such as pigs and cattle.
After the slaughter of large animals such as pigs and cattle, the carcasses or parts thereof are usually displaced along a conveyor for further processing in successive operations. The usual method of transport consists of the carcasses or carcass parts being suspended with the hind legs from displaceable suspending members, also referred to as "spreaders". The carcasses can herein swing and rotate round the point of suspension of the spreaders. During the manual, mechanical or automatic performing of an operation it is generally desired to place or hold the carcass in a controlled stationary position, which in practice usually takes place manually. The Belgian patent BE 1 007
533 describes a cutting machine for removing the front legs of hanging animals by means of a guillotine system. The described machine contains a turning device with which profiles with hooks from which the animals are suspended can be rotated. By controlling the turning device by means of a detection element the animals can be rotated into an orientation suitable for processing.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved method and apparatus whereby in simple and automatic manner carcasses of carcass parts of large animals such as pigs and cattle displaceable along a conveyor can be positioned in vertical direction.
The invention provides for this purpose an apparatus of the type stated in the preamble, characterized in that the engaging means comprise contact members for engaging at least at two positions on a suspending member at a distance from a centre line through the suspending member. Such a positioning apparatus does not engage directly on the
carcasses but on the suspending members (spreaders). A significant advantage hereof is that there is no contact between the positioning means and the carcasses. It is of great importance that with the present invention it is possible to precisely control the relative suspension height of a plurality of carcass parts engaged by a suspending member. If a carcass hangs askew, it can be suspended upright by means of the present apparatus such that determined operations can be performed more effectively and/or efficiently.
The European patent application EP 0 545 501 describes a method and apparatus for performing operations on carcasses of slaughtered animals. The application describes two stops with which suspending members can be placed or held perpendicularly of a conveyor.
In a preferred embodiment the contact members are displaceable between a non-active position located outside the path of movement of the suspending members and an active position in which the contact members connect onto a suspending member. The contact members can thus be employed selectively; when they are not in use they will not impede the progress of the carcasses. Another advantage is that carcasses can selectively be either oriented or not, which may be useful when alternate carcasses have to be processed. A further advantage is that the speed of positioning is adjustable.
It is also possible for the engaging means to be displaceable parallel to the conveyor, whereby the desired orientation of a carcass or carcass parts can be maintained over a longer path. Alternatively, it is also possible that the contact members take a stationary form and that the displacement of the suspending members along the conveyor brings the suspending members into contact with the contact members. The contact members can herein take an elongate form and be located substantially parallel to the conveyor. In this embodiment variant the displacement of a carcass or carcass parts positions the suspending members without a further actuation of the contact members being necessary for this purpose. The construction of the stationary contact members is moreover relatively simple and little susceptible to malfunction.
The invention further provides a method for positioning suspending members which are displaceable along a conveyor and which are adapted to carry carcasses or carcass parts of large animals such as pigs and cattle, comprising the processing steps of: A) suspending carcasses or carcass parts from the suspending members, B) displacing the loaded suspending members along a conveyor, and C) engaging on and positioning the suspending members and the attached carcasses or carcass parts, characterized in that the suspending members are engaged at least at two positions at a distance from a centre line through a suspending member, and that the processing step C) is performed during performing of processing step B). Using this method the advantages can be realized as already described with reference to the above described positioning apparatus.
The invention also provides an apparatus for positioning carcasses or carcass parts of large animals such as pigs and cattle displaceable along a conveyor, comprising: a conveyor, displaceable suspending members engaging on the conveyor and positioning means placed a short distance from the transport path of the suspending members for engaging on the legs of the carcasses or carcass parts, characterized in that the positioning means are located such that they engage on the legs on the knee side at a position between the knee and an engagement position of a suspending member. The positioning means can herein be formed by a guide and take a stationary or displaceable form. Using such an apparatus a method for positioning carcasses or carcass parts of large animals such as pigs and cattle displaced along a conveyor can be realized, which method is also provided by the invention and comprises the processing steps of: a) suspending carcasses or carcass parts from the suspending member, b) displacing the loaded suspending members along a conveyor, and c) engaging on the legs of the carcasses or carcass parts, characterized in that the legs are engaged on the knee side at a position between the knee and the engagement position of a suspending member such that the hanging carcasses or carcass parts are urged into an inclining position in which the knees are locked in an extreme position. By locking the knee joints of the carcass using the apparatus, a degree of freedom for movement of the carcass is eliminated. In addition, the rotation point of the carcass is lower and the possible outward swinging of the carcass is bounded. This all results in a more readily controllable positioning of the carcass.
The invention will be further elucidated with reference to the non-limitative embodiments shown in the figures. Herein: figure la shows a front view of an obliquely hanging suspending member with a part of the positioning apparatus according to the invention, figure lb shows a front view of the suspending member and the positioning apparatus shown in figure la with a positioned suspending member, and figure 2 shows a side view of a carcass of a pig suspended from the positioning apparatus, which apparatus is an alternative to the apparatus shown in figures 1 a and lb.
Figure la shows a positioning apparatus in which two positioning blocks 24 can be urged against the top side of an engaging part 15 using cylinders 25. These cylinders 25 are in turn connected in stationary manner to a conveyor 20 by means of frame beams 26. When a carcass is not equally heavy on both sides, engaging part 15 is loaded differently on either side and will thus hang askew. A carcass wherein left and right- hand sides are not equally heavy can for instance be the result of an asymmetrical pig or asymmetrical processes. A carcass may also hang askew as a consequence of deformations of the engaging part 15 (also referred to as spreader). A further reason for a carcass to hang askew may be that it is not fixed in symmetrical manner with the legs to engaging part 15. Asymmetrical hanging of the carcass can be particularly disruptive to determined operations, an example hereof being leaf- fat stripping wherein for a good result the carcass must be suspended practically vertically or symmetrically. By now forcing the positioning blocks 24 against engaging part 15 using cylinders 25, engaging part 15 is returned to a horizontal position. The carcass is thus positioned in vertical direction. Positioning blocks 24 as shown in this figure form displaceable stops, but it is of course also possible to give these a stationary form and to have the engaging part 15 come into contact with such stationary stops through the forward movement along conveyor 20. In order to hold a carcass in a desired position over a longer path, positioning blocks 24 can be given an elongate form in the plane perpendicularly of the drawing such that engaging part 15 is urged into a desired position over a determined path. It is also possible to mount positioning blocks 24 and cylinders 25 on a processing station co-displacing with a carcass instead of the stationary connection to conveyor 20 as shown in this figure. Particularly processing stations which carry out operations on a
laterally displaced carcass, such as a belly opener or leaf- fat stripper, can advantageously be combined with positioning blocks 24 and cylinders 25.
Figure lb shows the positioning apparatus as shown in figure la in which positioning blocks 24 both lie against engaging part 15. The engaging part is urged to a horizontal position by cylinders 25 such that the desired position of the carcass is obtained for performing operations.
Figure 2 shows a carcass 2 suspended from a suspending member 27, for instance of a conventional type. A stop 28 is placed a short distance from suspending member 27 such that this stop 28 engages on carcass 2 above the knee joints of hind legs 3 of carcass 2. These knee joints are situated roughly at the height of arrow P2. Stop 28 urges carcass aside such that the knee joints of hind legs 3 are locked, which results in a more readily controllable positioning of carcass 2. The displacement of the carcass takes place in the direction perpendicularly of the figure.
Although the invention is elucidated with reference to only a few embodiments, it will be apparent to all that the invention is by no means limited to the described and shown embodiments. On the contrary, many variations are still possible for the skilled person within the scope of the invention.
