Definitions

  • ITS CASE DESCRIPTION Wristwatches have a case whose dimensions must necessarily be limited in order to adapt to the dimensions (in cross section) of the human wrist. This limitation on the dimensions sometimes causes problems from the point of view of the required styling.
  • An increase in the size of the case - in order to increase its visual impact - may make the watch uncomfortable on the wrist because the case (which is rigid) must lift off it at certain points; then the strap does not lie properly on the wrist, either.
  • the Model described herein reconciles the above demands by making it possible to enlarge the apparent size of the watch and to ensure that it fits the wrist comfortably.
  • the watch case is combined with two opposing U-shaped parts that symmetrically partly embrace the case, being hinged about axes alongside the centerline of the face, thus forming an apparent enlargement of the case itself.
  • Said two parts can be inclined relative to the plane of the case in order to follow the curvature of the human wrist; while the two components of the strap are attached to said two U-shaped parts.
  • Each of said two opposing parts follows the outline of the corresponding portion of the case, with a limited gap between it and the case, in order to create an apparent increase in the size of the case.
  • each of said U-shaped parts may essentially form an arc of a circle. If the case is rectangular, each of said U-shaped parts may extend along one side and along approximately one half of the two adjacent sides of the case. If the case is polygonal, each of said U-shaped parts may be formed like a broken line to follow a portion of the outlineof the case.
  • the drawing shows a possible embodiment of the model and in particular:
  • Figs. 1 -6 show variants of the conceptual solution in accordance with the model, differentiated from each other by styling only;
  • Fig. 7 shows a view in local section essentially on the broken plane VII-VII as marked in Figs. 1 and 2;
  • Figs. 8 and 9 show further embodiments.
  • the number 1 denotes the case and 3 the face of a wristwatch, the strap components of which are marked 5.
  • each of the components 5 of the strap is not hinged or otherwise attached to the case or to a part hinged to the periphery of the case, but rather to a member 7 that is hinged about the axis X-X to a corresponding U-shaped part marked 9, and this in turn is hinged about the axis Y-Y to the case 1 at a position close to the intermediate transverse axis Z-Z of the case 1 and of the face 3.
  • the two U-shaped parts 9 (corresponding to the two components 5 of the strap and to the two members 7 to which the strap attaches) are equally close to the axis Z of the case so that their hinge axes Y-Y almost coincide with this axis Z, but leaving the necessary amount of space for the winding mechanism if the watch has a mechanical action (rather than being battery-powered) as indicated at 11 in the drawing, when this winding mechanism is present.
  • Each member 7 may be hinged, as already stated - about an axis X-X to the base of the U-shaped part 9, but this component 5 could also be attached directly to the U-shaped part 9, as in the case of Fig. 6.
  • each of the U-shaped parts 9 can adopt a more or less inclined angle relative to the plane of the case 1 , as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 7.
  • the case 1 can therefore also be made larger than is possible with present-day wristwatches, while at the same time ensuring the correct close fit of the complete watch and strap assembly by which the watch case is secured to the user's wrist, even though wrists can differ greatly in size, owing to the fact that, as indicated, the U-shaped parts 9 can adopt a more or less marked inclination relative to the plane of the case 1 itself. Also, the presence of the U-shaped parts 9 enables the overall wristwatch assembly to be made to appear larger than the case 1 of this assembly actually is.
  • Figs. 8 and 9 show two further embodiments in which the same references are used as for the previous figures.
  • Fig. 9 shows interlocking outlines between the components 7 and 9, creating a weave effect.
  • the parts 9 will be shaped in the most appropriate way in accordance with the esthetic principles being aimed at, but in all cases the parts 9 follow more or less closely the peripheral outline of the case 1.
  • the distance from the hinge axes Y of the U-shaped parts 9 to the transverse axis Z-Z of the case will depend in part also on styling considerations as well as on functional considerations of adapting the resulting means of attachment of the watch to the human wrist.
