Definitions
- the present invention relates to packaging compact discs and like articles into containers.
- the invention concerns a method and an apparatus for placing a sheet between a transparent protective film and a case, which is covered with this film.
- CDs and in particular DVD discs
- containers made of plastic material and including two shells forming a case.
- the two shells are hinged along a mutual joining side and are equipped with locking means situated along opposite sides .
- the internal facings of the shells feature means for holding the CD and a booklet.
- the shells of the case are covered with a transparent protective film.
- the film is fastened to the shells along the sides opposite to the hinge side.
- a printed graphic insert, or sheet, is usually placed between the transparent protective film and the case.
- the packages obtained with the above mentioned cases are processed by automatic machines which take closed cases from a magazine, open them and introduce the CD and the booklet, taken one by one from respective magazines .
- the introduction of the insert between the transparent protective film and the case is the most -complicated and difficult operation of the whole packaging process, because the film adheres tightly to the case.
- Sometimes, in order to facilitate the introduction of the insert it is necessary to trim its corners away, which increases costs and not always gives a pleasant result.
- the sheet can also be positioned in a defective way, which negatively affects the package aesthetic aspect.
- the difficulty encountered while inserting the cover leaflet results from the fact that the containers to be packaged are fed, after having been opened, with the inner facings turned upwards, to allow the insertion of the CD and booklet therein. Because of this position, the cover leaflet must be inserted below the open container, thus in an invisible area, which cannot be controlled by the operator.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a method by which a sheet can be introduced automatically and easily between a transparent protective film and a container covered with this film, avoiding defective positioning of the sheet.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a method for introducing the sheet, wherein the processing can be visually checked by an operator.
- a further object of the present invention is the provision of an apparatus which carries out the above- mentioned method and which is of simple and functional construction .

In the lower part, the blades 43 feature a plurality of holes to be set in communication with suction means.
- the fork 42 is carried by a pair of uprights 44, which are reciprocated in a longitudinal direction parallel to the rotating drum device 23 axis, by motor means, not shown .
- the movement of the fork 42 determines the introduction of the sheet 3, folded in the middle area 3a, after that it has been taken away from the support plates 36 of the transfer device 34, in the space defined by the raised transparent protective film 2 and the open shells la, lb of the container 1 ( Figures 12 and 13) .
- the sheet 3 After having been introduced, the sheet 3 is clamped together with the film 2 between the bar 29, moved to the lowered position, and a gripping member 45.
- the gripping member 45 is moved upwards after having been introduced under the middle area 3a of the sheet 3, so as to allow the fork 42 to be removed ( Figure 14) .
- the sheet 3 introduced between the container 1 and the transparent protective film 2 spreads flat.
- stepwise rotations of the rotating drum device 23 bring the container 1, together with the sheet 3, to a third working station, in which additional operations can be performed, such as application of labels, and then to a fourth working station, in which the container 1 is released, and then directed to further steps, in which the CD and booklet are introduced therein.
- the proposed method and the apparatus obtain the object of performing automatically and easily the introduction of a sheet between the transparent protective film and the container covered by this film, thus avoiding incorrect position of the sheet. This is obtained, in particular, as a result of the opening of the shells la, lb of the container by an angle of more than 180° and of the raising of the film 2, which help to define a wide inlet space for the sheet 3.
- the folding of the sheet 3 middle area 3a reduces the longitudinal dimensions of the sheet 3, thus facilitating its introduction in the above mentioned space.
- One of the characteristic features of the invention derives from the fact that, during the sheet 3 introduction, the container 1 is turned with the outer surface of the shells la, lb, wrapped with the film 2, facing upwards. This allows an operator to constantly check the correct execution of the introduction operation.
- a further advantage of the present invention lies in the fact that the proposed method is carried out by an apparatus, which is functional and has a very simple structure, which ensures reliable operation and allows reduced costs.
