Abstract

The invention provides a kit-of-parts system for the separate and sequential use for the treatment of the teeth and/or the gums. The kit comprises a first composition for the treatment of the teeth and/or the gums, in combination with a second, different composition for the treatment of the teeth and/or the gums, both compositions being packed in separate containers. In a preferred embodiment the second composition comprises a gum protecting agent such as a fat or an oil, e.g. sunflower oil.

Description

ORAL CARE SYSTEM CONTAINING SUNFLOWER OIL
The present invention relates to a system for the care of the human teeth and gums. More particularly, it relates to a system comprising a combination of at least two different compositions which allows the consumer to treat his/her teeth and/or gums with the different compositions separately or sequentially.
Compositions for the care of the human teeth and gums are, of course, very well-known, and a great variety of such compositions have been proposed in the art and found their way to the market place. Such compositions usually contain active ingredients which have a beneficial therapeutic or cosmetic benefit on the teeth and/or the gums. However, there are quite a number of such therapeutic or cosmetic active ingredients which are not mutually compatible, or which are not compatible with certain other ingredients of oral care compositions. Thus, for example, hydrogen peroxide is an active ingredient for teeth whitening, but is not stably compatible with e.g. sodium bicarbonate, and hence dual compartment containers have been developed in which one compartment contains hydrogen peroxide together with compatible ingredients, and the other compartment contains sodium bicarbonate together with compatible ingredients. Both compositions are then extruded by manual pressure through a common orifice to bring the two compositions together on the brush and are then applied to the teeth. Similar dual composition systems have been proposed for anti-caries toothpastes with a calcium salt and a phosphate, for anti-sensitive teeth compositions with two anti- sensitive teeth ingredients and so on.
While these systems can provide for an efficacious treatment of the teeth, they require a rather elaborate dispensing system. Moreover, they do not allow the consumer to apply two different compositions separately or sequentially, nor do they allow the consumer to apply different compositions to different substrates, e.g. the teeth and the gums separately or sequentially.
It has now been found that a system comprising a composition for the care of the teeth and/or the gums, m combination with a separate, different composition for the care of the teeth and/or the gums, as a combined preparation for the separate or sequential use of the teeth and/or the gums enables the consumer to treat the teeth and/or the gums separately or sequentially.
The system is preferably provided m the form of a kit -of - parts. Thus, for example, it may comprise a toothpaste composition, packed m a tube, and a gum-care composition, packed in a suitable container, the tube and container both forming part of a kit . The consumer can then brush his teeth first with the toothpaste, and subsequently apply in any convenient manner the gum care composition to his gums. The gum-care composition, packed in a suitable container, may also be removably attached to the toothpaste tube, e.g. the container may be m the form of a closeable receptacle, which may be screwed on the orifice of the toothpaste tube, thus forming simultaneously the closure cap of the tube. The container may contain a closure lid. The consumer can thus screw off the container from the tube, and use the toothpaste and the gum care composition separately and sequentially. It is, of course, also possible to have more than two different compositions as part of the kit, e.g. a sensitive teeth toothpaste, a teeth whitening gel and a gum care composition.
In essence, therefore, the present invention relates to an oral care treatment regime product formed with separate containers, each storing a different composition functioning to separately impart a benefit to the teeth and/or the mucous membranes in a separate or sequential manner. Such oral care treatment regime product comprises a first composition containing at least one first active within a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, the first composition functioning to impart a first benefit to the teeth and/or the mucous membranes, and a second composition containing at least one second active within a second pharmaceutically active carrier, the second composition functioning to impart a second benefit to the teeth and/or the mucous membranes, the first and second composition being different from each other, and each composition being stored m separate containers being releasably jomable fitted together or forming a kit-of-parts for separate or sequential use. The first composition can be any convential dentifrice comprising a particular active ingredient such as an anti- caries agent, an anti -plaque agent, an anti -gingivitis agent, a teeth-whitening agent, an anti-microbial agent, an anti-sensitive teeth agent and so on. Such dentifrices are well-known m the art, see e.g. Balsam Sagarin, Cosmetics Science and Technology (1972), Vol. 1, pages 423-531.
A preferred first composition is a dentifrice comprising a compatible anti-sensitive teeth agent such as potassium nitrate or potassium chloride or potassium citrate, optionally together with an anti-microbial agent such as Triclosan. The second composition is preferably a gum care composition. Such composition contains an active ingredient which exerts a beneficial effect on the gums (mucous membranes), e.g. a gum-protectmg effect or a gum irritation preventing effect. Such agent can be included in an appropriate carrier material, e.g. a fat, an oil, a wax, an ointment base, silicones and the like. The carrier material can, however, itself also act as a gum care composition, which is e.g. the case with fats, oils, and waxes. A preferred gum care composition consists of sunflower oil, or glycerylmono-oleate, or petroleum jelly. A preferred regime system comprises a tube with the first composition in the form of a dentifrice, said tube containing releasably joined therewith a container cap, said cap containing the gum care composition which is preferably a solid or semi-solid composition comprising sunflower oil or glycerylmono-oleate. The consumer can then screw off the cap, first use the dentifrice and then apply the gum care composition to the gums in a separate and sequential manner.
The gum care composition may also be applied to the teeth, e.g. m the case the gum care composition contains ingredients which are also exerting a beneficial effect on the teeth, e.g. a desensitizing ingredient. The pack of the kit, or the separate containers, can be provided with directions to the user of how and in which order the compositions should be used.
Naturally, any other combination of the first and the second composition in different containers can be used, e.g. a tube of dentifrice and a separate pouch or sachet or jar with the gum care composition, together forming a kit-of-parts.
