Abstract
Es wird ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethyl iminodiessigsäure durch Umsetzung von Iminodiessigsäure mit phosphoriger Säure und Formaldehyd in wässriger Lösung in Gegenwart einer starken Mineralsäure beschrieben, welches dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass man die Reaktion bei einer Temperatur von 110 bis 150 °C unter Schutzgasatmosphäre durchführt. Die Hauptvorteile dieses Verfahrens stellen die hohen Ausbeuten und Reinheiten bezüglich der N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure sowie der nahezu stöchiometrische Bedarf an Edukten und die damit verbundenen geringeren Abfallmengen dar.
Description
Verfahren zur Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure
Beschreibung
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure ausgehend von Iminodiessigsäure.
N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) stellt bekanntermaßen eine wichtige Zwischenverbindung zur Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethylglycin (Glyphosate) dar. Entsprechend dem Stand der Technik erfolgt die Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure durch Umsetzung von Iminodiessigsäure mit Formaldehyd und phosphoriger Säure in Gegenwart von starken Mineralsäuren, wobei als Mineralsäuren Salzsäure oder Schwefelsäure bevorzugt eingesetzt werden.
Nachteilig bei den bisher bekannten Verfahren ist die Tatsache, daß bislang erhebliche Überschüsse an allen beteiligten Reaktionskomponenten bezogen auf die Iminodiessigsäure benötigt werden, um zufriedenstellende Ausbeuten erzielen zu können. So werden beispielsweise beim Verfahren gemäß WO 94/1 5 939 1 ,07 Äquivalente phosphorige Säure, 1 ,24 Äquivalente Formaldehyd und 1 ,04 Äquivalente Schwefelsäure pro Äquivalent Iminodiessigsäure eingesetzt, wobei isolierte Ausbeuten von durchschnittlich ca. 90 % und Reinheiten von ca. 96 % erzielt werden. Hierbei entsteht als dominierendes Nebenprodukt N-Methyliminodiessig- säure, welche durch reduktive Alkylierung von Iminodiessigsäure gebildet wird. Eine Ausbeutesteigerung auf ca. 95 % ist beim Verfahren gemäß der WO 94/1 5 939 zwar möglich, allerdings nur bei Zugabe von 1 ,40 Äquivalenten anstelle von 1 ,07 Äquivalenten an phosphoriger Säure, d. h. in 40 %igem Überschuß. Neben den höheren Rohstoffkosten besteht ein weiterer gravierender Nachteil darin, daß deutlich höhere Abfallmengen anfallen, die ggf. aufwendig entsorgt oder aufgereinigt werden müssen.
Der vorliegenden Erfindung lag daher die Aufgabe zugrunde, ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure durch Umsetzung von Iminodiessigsäure mit Formaldehyd und phosphoriger Säure in Gegenwart von starken Mineraisäuren zu entwickeln, welches die genannten Nachteile des Standes der Technik nicht aufweist, sondern auch mit stöchiometrischen bzw. nahezu stöchiometrischen Mengen an Ausgangsmaterialien die Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethylimino- diessigsäure in hohen Ausbeuten und hohen Reinheiten ermöglicht.
Diese Aufgabe wurde erfindungsgemäß dadurch gelöst, daß man die Reaktion bei einer Temperatur von 1 1 0 bis 1 50°C unter Schutzgasatmosphäre durchführt.
Es hat sich hierbei nämlich überraschenderweise gezeigt, daß die Umsetzung bei höheren Temperaturen im Vergleich zum Stand der Technik zu einer deutlichen Ausbeutesteigerung führt und gleichzeitig weniger Nebenprodukte beispielsweise in Form von N-Methyiiminodiessigsäure gebildet werden. Diese Ergebnisse sind deshalb so überraschend, da Temperaturerhöhungen bei chemischen Mehrkomponentenreaktionen im allgemeinen mit einer Zunahme der Nebenproduktbildung verbunden sind, was im übrigen durch die WO 94/1 5 939 bestätigt wird (vgl. S. 4, 3. Abschnitt) .
Beim Verfahren entsprechend der vorliegenden Erfindung erfolgt die Umsetzung von Iminodiessigsäure mit phosphoriger Säure und Formaldehyd in wäßriger Lösung in Gegenwart einer starken Mineralsäure wie z. B. Schwefelsäure oder Salzsäure, wobei die Verwendung von Schwefelsäure als bevorzugt anzusehen ist. Formaldehyd wird vorzugsweise in Form einer 25 bis 60%igen, insbesondere 30%igen, wäßrigen Lösung und phosphorige Säure vorzugsweise als 50 bis 85 %ige wäßrige Lösung eingesetzt. Formaldehyd kann jedoch auch in Form von Vorstufen, d.h. Formaldehyd
freisetzenden Verbindungen wie Paraformaldehyd oder Metaformaldehyd (1 ,3,5-Trioxan) eingesetzt werden.
Es ist als erfindungswesentlich anzusehen, daß die Reaktion bei Temperaturen zwischen 1 1 0 und 1 50°C, vorzugsweise 1 25 bis 140°C, durchgeführt wird. Nur auf diese Weise ist es möglich, ausgehend von stöchiometrischen bzw. nahezu stöchiometrischen Mengen an A u sg a ng s materialien hohe Ausbeuten u nd eine g eri ng e Nebenproduktbildung zu erzielen. Vorzugsweise werden pro Äquivalent Iminodiessigsäure jeweils 1 ,0 bis 1 , 1 , insbesondere 1 ,0 bis 1 ,05, Äquivalente an Formaldehyd und phosphoriger Säure eingesetzt. Der Anteil an starker Mineralsäure (bezogen auf Iminodiessigsäure) liegt vorzugsweise bei 0,6 bis 1 , 1 , insbesondere 0,9 bis 1 ,0, Äquivalenten pro Äquivalent Iminodiessigsäure.
Der Konzentrationsbereich der Reaktionskomponenten (Iminodiessigsäure, phosphorige Säure, Mineralsäure, Formaldehyd) in der wäßrigen Reaktionslösung kann in weiten Grenzen variiert werden, doch hat es sich aus Gründen der Wirtschaftlichkeit als besonders vorteilhaft erwiesen, die Reaktion in einem Konzentrationsbereich von 10 bis 40 Gew.-% bezogen auf die Menge der eingesetzten Iminodiessigsäure durchzuführen.
Es ist desweiteren als erfindungswesentlich anzusehen, daß die Umsetzung unter Schutzgasatmosphäre erfolgt, wobei aus Kostengründen Stickstoff als Schutzgas bevorzugt eingesetzt wird. Es ist jedoch ohne weiteres möglich, anstelle von Stickstoff auch Edelgase wie z. B. Argon oder Neon zu verwenden.
Nach Abschluß der Reaktion, die in der Regel nach 1 bis 5 Stunden beendet ist, kann die N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure nach bekannten
Methoden aufgearbeitet werden. Hierzu verdünnt man z.B. das
Reaktionsgemisch mit Wasser und läßt danach die N-Phosphonomethyl-
iminodiessigsäure auskristallisieren. Anschließend wird das Produkt z.B. durch Filtration abgetrennt, ggf. mit Wasser gewaschen und getrocknet. Hierbei fällt die N-Phosphonomethyiiminodiessigsäure als weißer, feinkristalliner und sehr gut filtrierbarer Feststoff an, wobei die isolierte Ausbeute bei ca. 93 %, die Reinheit bei > 98 % und der Gesamtumsatz bei ca. 95 % liegen. Der Nebenproduktanteil an N-Methyliminodiessigsäure liegt bei < 2,5 %, insbesondere < 1 ,3 % bezogen auf den Gesamtumsatz.
Die hohen Ausbeuten und Reinheiten bzgl. der N-Phosphonomethylimino- diessigsäure sowie der nahezu stöchiometrische Bedarf an Edukten und die damit geringeren Abfallmengen stellen die Hauptvorteile des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens dar.
Die nachfolgenden Beispiele sollen die Erfindung näher veranschaulichen.
Beispiele
Beispiel 1 (Vergleichsbeispiel gemäß WO 94/1 5 939)
Gemäß Beispiel 3 der WO 94/1 5 939 wird zur PMIDA-Synthese eine Mischung von 1 1 ,2 g Wasser (0,623 mol), 49,8 g konzentrierter Schwefelsäure (98 %ig; 0,498 mol), 66,5 g Iminodiessigsäure (IDA) (95,4 %ig; 0,479 mol) und 42,6 g phosphoriger Säure (99 %ig; 0,514 mol) erhaltene Reaktionsmischung auf 1 1 5 °C erhitzt. Bei dieser Temperatur wird dann innerhalb von 2 h 48,2 g Formaldehyd (37 %ig; 0,594 mol) zugetropft. Während der Zugabe wird die Temperatur zwischen 1 10 und 1 20°C gehalten. Anschließend läßt man 1 h bei 1 1 5 °C reagieren und kühlt danach auf 90°C ab. Bei 90°C wird dann innerhalb von 1 h 92,0 g Verdünnungswasser zugegeben. Nach der weiteren, in der WO 94/1 5 939 beschriebenen Aufarbeitung wird N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) mit einer isolierten Ausbeute von 89,6 % (Reinheit 95,6 %) erhalten, bei einem Gesamtumsatz von 93,0 % bezogen auf PMIDA.
Bei der Wiederholung dieses Literaturbeispiels wurde zusätzlich der Nebenproduktanteil an N-Methyliminodiessigsäure (MIDA) bestimmt. Dabei wurde ein MIDA-Nebenproduktanteil von 3,9 % gefunden.
Beispiel 2 (Vergleichsbeispiel)
Analog Beispiel 1 wird die ausgehend von 0,623 mol Wasser, sowie äquimolaren Mengen an konzentrierter Schwefelsäure, Iminodiessigsäure und phosphoriger Säure (jeweils 0,50 mol) erhaltene Reaktionsmischung auf 1 1 5 °C erhitzt. Bei dieser Temperatur wird dann innerhalb von 2 h Formaldehyd in 1 , 1 0 molarem Überschuß (30 %ig; 0,55 mol) zugetropft. Anschließend wird 1 h bei 1 1 5 °C reagieren gelassen. Nach Abkühlen auf 90°C wird bei dieser Temperatur innerhalb von 1 h 92,0 g Verdünnungswasser zugegeben. Die weitere Aufarbeitung erfolgt wie in der WO 94/1 5 939 beschrieben.
Dabei wird N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) mit einer isolierten Ausbeute von 84, 1 % (Reinheit 97,4 %) erhalten, bei einem Gesamtumsatz von 88,0 % bezogen auf PMIDA. Der Nebenproduktanteil an MIDA liegt bei 4,6 % .
Beispiel 3 (Erfindung)
Zu einer Mischung aus 49,0 g konz. Schwefelsäure (98 %ig; 0,49 mol) und 1 1 ,2 g Wasser werden 66,9 g Iminodiessigsäure (IDA; 99,5 %ig; 0,5 mol) und 42,9 g phosphorige Säure (99,5 %ig; 0,5 mol) hinzugefügt. Das Reaktionsgemisch wird unter Schutzgasatmosphäre (Stickstoff) auf 1 30°C aufgeheizt (siedet nicht) und anschließend werden bei dieser Temperatur 55,0 g einer 30 %igen wäßrigen Formaldehyd-Lösung (0,55 mol) innerhalb von 2 h unter Beibehaltung der Schutzgasatmosphäre langsam zugetropft. Dabei beginnt nach Zugabe von einigen Millilitern Lösung etwas Wasser zu refluxieren und die Temperatur des Reaktionsgemisches fällt im Verlauf der
weiteren Formaiinzugabe auf 1 1 6 °C ab (nach ca. 75 Min. bildet sich ein weißer Niederschlag) . Nach beendeter Zugabe wird die Reaktionstemperatur noch 2 h bei 1 1 6°C gehalten und anschließend auf 90°C innerhalb von 1 h abgesenkt. Zu der Reaktionsmischung werden 92,0 g Wasser zur Verdünnung innerhalb von 1 h zugefügt. Nach dem Abkühlen des Reaktionsgemisches wird die auskristallisierte PMIDA abfiltriert, 2 x mit je 30 ml Wasser gewaschen und bei 70°C im Vakuumtrockenschrank getrocknet. Das PMIDA-Produkt fällt als weißer, fein kristalliner und sehr gut filtrierbarer Feststoff an.
Dabei wird N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) mit einer isolierten Ausbeute von 91 ,8 % (Reinheit 98, 1 %) erhalten, bei einem Gesamtumsatz von 92,4 % bezogen auf PMIDA. Der Nebenproduktanteil an MIDA liegt bei 2, 1 % .
Beispiel 4 (Erfindung)
Man geht analog Beispiel 3 vor, jedoch mit dem Unterschied, daß 0,52 mol phosphorige Säure sowie 0,50 mol Formalin (30 %ig) verwendet werden, entsprechend einem 1 ,04 molaren Überschuß an phosphoriger Säure und einer exakt stöchiometrischen Menge ( 1 ,00 Äquivalente) an Formalin bezogen auf IDA.
Dabei wird N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) mit einer isolierten Ausbeute von 91 , 1 % (Reinheit 100,0 %) erhalten, bei einem Gesamtumsatz von 92,6 % bezogen auf PMIDA. Der Nebenproduktanteil an MIDA liegt bei 2, 1 % .
Beispiel 5 (Erfindung)
Man geht analog Beispiel 3 vor, jedoch mit dem Unterschied, daß jeweils 0,52 mol phosphorige Säure sowie Formalin (30 %ig) verwendet werden,
entsprechend einem jeweils 1 ,04 molaren Uberschuß an phosphoriger Säure und Formalin bezogen auf IDA.
Dabei wird N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) mit einer isolierten Ausbeute von 93,0 % (Reinheit 100,0 %) erhalten, bei einem Gesamtumsatz von 95,4 % bezogen auf PMIDA. Der Nebenproduktanteil an MIDA liegt bei 1 ,8 %.
Beispiel 6 (Erfindung)
Man geht analog Beispiel 5 vor, jedoch mit dem Unterschied, daß die Ansatzgröße von 0,5 mol auf 2,5 mol erhöht wird.
Dabei wird N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) mit einer isolierten Ausbeute von 91 ,6 % (Reinheit 98,3 %) erhalten, bei einem Gesamtumsatz von 93,9 % bezogen auf PMIDA. Der Nebenproduktanteil an MIDA liegt bei 1 ,2 %.
Beispiel 7 (Erfindung)
Man geht analog Beispiel 3 vor, jedoch mit dem Unterschied, daß 0,525 mol phosphorige Säure sowie 0,50 mol Formalin (30 %ig) verwendet werden, entsprechend einem 1 ,05 molaren Überschuß an phosphoriger Säure und einer exakt stöchiometrischen Menge (1 ,00 Äquivalente) an Formalin bezogen auf IDA. Darüber hinaus wird die Reaktionstemperatur von 1 30°C auf 1 40°C erhöht.
Dabei wird N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure (PMIDA) mit einer isolierten Ausbeute von 90,7 % (Reinheit 98, 1 %) erhalten, bei einem Gesamtumsatz von 92,3 % bezogen auf PMIDA. Der Nebenproduktanteil an MIDA liegt bei 1 ,7 % .
Claims
1 . Verfahren zur Herstellung von N-Phosphonomethyliminodiessigsäure durch Umsetzung von Iminodiessigsäure mit phosphoriger Säure und
Formaldehyd in wäßriger Lösung in Gegenwart einer starken Mineralsäure, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Reaktion bei einer Temperatur von 1 10 bis 1 50°C unter Schutzgasatmosphäre durchführt.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 , dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man Formaldehyd in Form einer 20 bis 60%igen wäßrigen Lösung verwendet.
3. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die phosphorige Säure in Form einer 50 bis 85 %igen wäßrigen Lösung zum Einsatz kommt.
4. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als starke Mineralsäure Schefelsäure einsetzt.
5. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Umsetzung bei einer Temperatur von 1 25 bis 140°C durchführt.
6. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man pro Äquivalent Iminodiessigsäure jeweils 1 ,0 bis 1 , 1 insbesondere 1 ,0 bis 1 ,05, Äquivalente an phosphoriger Säure und Formaldehyd einsetzt.
7. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man pro Äquivalent Iminodiessigsäure 0,6 bis 1 , 1 , insbesondere 0,9 bis 1 ,0, Äquivalente an Mineralsäure einsetzt.
8. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als Schutzgas Stickstoff verwendet.
Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Konzentration der eingesetzten Iminodiessigsäure in der wäßrigen Reaktionslösung auf 1 0 bis 40 Gew.-% einstellt.
1 0. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Nebenproduktanteil an N-Methyliminodiessigsäure bei < 2,5%, insbesondere bei < 1 ,3%, bezogen auf den Gesamtumsatz liegt.
