Definitions

  • This invention relates to construction material and is particularly directed to improved thermal heating boards for application of hydronic radiant heating in new and existing construction.
  • An additional object of the present invention is to provide an improved hydronic radiant heating system which can be applied equally well to new or existing construction while providing efficient heating to the desired area.
  • a further object of the present invention is to provide an improved hydronic radiant heating system comprising a simple board rather than a complex assembly of parts.
  • An additional object of the present invention is to provide an improved hydronic radiant heating system which can be applied to floors, walls and ceilings.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved hydronic radiant heating system comprising a board that lends itself to modules which can easily be laid out and installed.
  • An additional object of the present invention is to provide an improved hydronic radiant heating system that lends itself to mass production, with associated cost savings.
  • This improved hydronic radiant heating system comprises a non-structural supporting board formed of thermally conductive material and having at least one recess formed in its upper surface. This upper surface including recesses is covered with a film of metal of high thermal conductivity. Each recess is shaped to receive a pipe which carries a heating fluid such as hot water. The heating fluid transfers heat across the pipe wall by convection and conduction to the metal film and adjacent supporting board.
  • the thickness of the metal film varies inversely with the thermal conductivity of the supporting board, i.e., a more conductive board would have a thinner film, and a less conductive board would have a thicker film.
  • the improved hydronic radiant heating system of the invention is applied over a suitable subfloor, over wall framing, under ceiling framing, over a concrete slab, or over an existing floor. Then the improved hydronic radiant heating system of the invention is covered, as the case may be, by the finished floor, or the wall or ceiling goods. The heated supporting board then transfers heat to the covering finished floor, or wall or ceiling goods, to heat the desired area.
  • FGURE 1 is a vertical section through a floor heating system embodying the present invention.
  • FlG.i shows a hydronic radiant heating system, indicated generally at 10, comprising a supporting board 12 having a recess 14 formed in the upper surface 16 of board 12, and having a pipe 18 located within recessl4, with a coat, or film, 20 of thermally conductive material such as metal spray, metal foil or the like deposited on upper surface 16 of board 12.
  • Supporting board 12 may be wood or, if desired, plywood, fiberboard, recycled material, or other suitable supporting material.
  • hydronic radiant heating system 10 is applied over a suitable subfloor, over wall framing, under ceiling framing, over a concrete slab, or over an existing floor. Then a finished floor or wall goods are installed over hydronic radiation heating system 10, or in the case of ceiling heating, ceiling finished goods are installed under hydronic radiant heating system 10.
  • Thermally conductive coat 20 can be varied to compensate for the varying conductive characteristics of supporting board 12.
  • the thickness of thermally conductive coat 20 could vary in relation to the thermal properties of supporting board 12.
  • a more conductive board 12 would have a thinner coat 20, while a less conductive board 12 would have a thicker coat 20.
  • the proper thickness of thermally conductive coat 20 can be achieved by spraying, or applying one or more layers of metal foil or the like, to upper surface 16 of supporting board 12.
  • the thickness of coat 20 can be extremely thin, yet serves to effectively and efficiently transfer heat from pipe 18 to coat 20 and hence to the desired area.
  • thermal heating board 10 The improved hydronic radiant heating system of the invention, embodied by thermal heating board 10, is simple and inexpensive to install. It can be applied equally well to new or existing construction and provides efficient heating of a desired area in all cases. Thermal heating board 10 lends itself to modularization for extensive and complex areas and yet maintains a simplicity of installation. It is applicable and useful for floors, walls and ceilings. Moreover, the improved hydronic radiant heating system of the invention lends itself to mass production, with associated cost savings.
