Abstract

The invention relates to a device for fixing a body panel (1) in a vehicle and comprises two elongated profiled strips (2, 4) connectable to one another, one of which is arranged on the inside of the body panel (1) and the second of which on the vehicle (3). One of the profiled strips has a recess (4a) designed, when connecting, to receive at least one flange element (2a, 2b; 2c) formed on the second profiled strip, in order to thereby achieve fixing of the body panel (1) to the vehicle (3). The fixing is thereby achieved through engagement based on positive interlock and friction. The profiled strip arranged on the inside of the body panel (1) is integrally formed with the body panel (1).

Description

Device for fastening a body panel in a vehicle.
The present invention relates to a device for fixing a body panel in a vehicle according to the pre-characterising part of claim 1.
In vehicles, especially trucks for road traffic, it is a problem to fix body panels rapidly and flexibly, and especially those body panels the function of which is to cover the underride protection, which according to current or forthcoming legislation is to be arranged between the front and rear wheels respectively of the vehicle. At present such body panels, so-called side skirts, are generally fixed by screwing these to a limited number of fixing points, as a result of which high localised stresses occur at these fixing points, which therefore may need to be reinforced. This method of fixing also requires a considerable number of separate fixing elements, such as bolts, and the incorporation of holes for these, which can weaken the structure in which they are made and can also encourage corrosive attack of steel structures. Furthermore, these often visible fastening elements limit the design freedom. Fixing at a limited number of fixing points also means that the body panels tend to flap whilst travelling, which results in further stresses at the fixing points.
According to one embodiment of the present invention a device is produced for fixing a body panel in a vehicle, as specified by claim 1.
Preferred embodiments furthermore have any or some of the characteristics specified in the subordinate claims.
The device according to the present invention for fixing a body panel in a vehicle has several advantages. Among other things, the invention provides the facility for rapid and easy arrangement of body panels in a way which means that the stresses occurring during assembly are distributed over relatively large areas. In the same way, the continuous fixing surfaces reduce the tendency of the body panels to flap when travelling. The fixing requires only moderate force for connection, which means that the assembly of body panels can be done by hand. The device according to the present invention can also be designed as an integral part of the body panel or a structure connected to the vehicle, such as an underride protection, for which reason no separate fastening elements are required for assembly. Such assembly without visible fastening elements results in greater design freedom of the body panels. The invention will be explained in more detail below with the aid of examples of preferred embodiments of devices according to the present invention for fixing a body panel in a vehicle.
Fig. 1 shows a body panel fixed in a vehicle by means of a first embodiment of the device according to the invention
Fig. 2 shows a section through a further embodiment of the device according to the invention
Fig. 3 shows a preferred embodiment of the device according the invention
The plate-shaped body panel 1 shown in figure 1 is provided on its inside with a pair of inwardly projecting, elongated profiled strips 2. The profiled strips 2 are preferably each designed as two parallel narrow flange elements 2a, 2b with a narrow intervening gap 2d between them. The flange elements 2a, 2b are preferably integrally formed with the body panel 1 and preferably have a certain elasticity in a transverse direction.
In the framework 3 of the vehicle intended as underride protection profiled strips 4 are arranged, which have elongated recesses 4a, each of which is designed to receive the flange elements 2a, 2b of the profiled strips formed on the body panel 1 and to hold these fast by means of a frictional and interlocking engagement. Figure 1 shows the profiled strips 4 provided with recesses 4a as integrated into the framework 3 and integrally formed therewith. The framework 3 may, for example, be an underride protection arranged on the vehicle.
As shown in figures 2, the profiled strips 4, provided with recesses 4a intended for fixing purposes, can also be formed as separate elements, for example aluminium profile sections. The said profiled strips 4 are suitably arranged so that they are well anchored in the underride protection 3, for example by welding, bolting, riveting, or bonding them fast or by fixing them thereto in any suitable way.
The profiled strips 4 suitably have two side flanges 4b, 4c surrounding the recess 4a, the said side flanges at their respective free edges having sections 4d, 4e, which are angled somewhat into the recess 4a, so that these can grip the flange elements 2a, 2b. When fitting a body panel 1 in a vehicle the profiled strips 2 of the panel, provided with flange elements 2a, 2b, are fitted in against the elongated recesses 4a in the profiled strips 4 on the vehicle and then pressed into these, as a result of which the flange elements are then held fast by engagement based on positive interlock and friction. This is facilitated if the flange elements 2a, 2b and the side flanges 4b, 4c of the profile sections are arranged so that they yield resiliently somewhat in a transverse direction when fitting.
The preferred embodiment shown in figure 3 illustrates how each profiled strip 2 can be fonned with an homogeneous flange element 2c and how the profiled section 4 provided with a recess 4a can be integrally formed with a rolled steel profile section 4, which forms part of the underride protection. The recess 4a in the steel profile section 4 may, in order to permit a good engagement, be formed with barbs or teeth 4f projecting into the opening 4a, which are designed to interact with the flange element 2c of the body panel in order to reinforce the engagement based on positive interlock and friction. Teeth or barbs may be applicable in particular where either the flange element or the recess yields resiliently in a transverse direction when fitting.
It will be obvious that even though the invention is principally described above in connection with body panels for trucks, it is suitable for the fitting of body panels in many different vehicles, such as trains, passenger cars, boats etc. Moreover, even though the opposite is shown in the figures, the recess can naturally also be formed in the body panel and the flange element in the underride protection.
