One equivalent of trimethyl phosphite is added dropwise to 50 mmol of the acid chloride at 5 ° C., then the mixture is allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for a further 2 h. The resulting 2, 4-0-isopropylidene-3-hydroxy-1-oxo-butylphosphonic acid dimethyl ester is produced in high yields and is dissolved directly in 5 ml of acetonitrile, mixed with 1.25 equivalents of sodium iodide and boiled under reflux. The complete conversion to the free phosphonic acid can be observed by 1 H-NMR. Alternatively, the Levatit S 100 H + ion exchanger provides an identical product.
