Definitions

  • This invention relates to a sealing device for use with an assembly having a pair of elements, one of which is mounted within an opening in the other.
  • the invention is particularly applicable to a sealing device for use with such an assembly in the form of a shaft mounted for movement within a bore in a supporting body.
  • a removable cap is placed over the bore and is provided with a sealing formation which engages the bore wall, in use. When the cap is removed, the internal element is entirely exposed and may become contaminated prior to replacement of the cap, leading to potential unreliability in performance of the assembly.
  • An object of the invention is to provide an improved sealing device having a closure member which may be opened with the device in situ, without substantially disturbing a seal between the device and a part of the assembly.
  • a sealing device for use with an assembly having a pair of elements, one of which is mounted within an opening in the other, comprises a relatively rigid hollow body intended to be mounted around a part of said one element and within the opening in the other element, and a flexible part arranged, in use, to form a hinged releasable closure member over an open end of the hollow body, the device being arranged, in use, to provide a seal around the opening.
  • the device is arranged, in use, to provide the seal between respective surfaces of the elements.
  • This arrangement is particularly advantageous because the hinge permanently connects the closure member to the hollow body, precluding its inadvertent loss and, with the closure member in its open position, a full seal is maintained between said elements.
  • the flexible part is a unitary component carried by the hollow body and providing a hinge connection between the closure member and a sealing portion which extends within the opening to seal both around the element mounted within the opening and against a wall of the opening.
  • the hollow body may be arranged, in use, to lie in sealing engagement against the element mounted within the opening.
  • an assembly having two elements, one of which is mounted within an opening in the other, the assembly incorporating the sealing device of the invention arranged to form a releasable closure member over an open end of the hollow body and to provide a seal around the opening.

  • Figure 1 illustrates one form of the seal device of the invention, designated generally by the reference numeral 1 , in use with a pair of cooperating members illustrated as a shaft 2, which may, for example, form part of a brake adjuster device, rotatably mounted in a body 3 of a brake or adjuster housing.
  • a portion 4 of the shaft projects within an opening 5 formed in an upper part of the body and has a non-circular formation, shown as a hexagon 6, formed at its free outer end to enable the shaft 2 to be rotated by application of a tool to the formation.
  • the sealing device 1 has a relatively rigid generally tubular body 7 formed of thin gauge metal or plastics material, extending within the opening 5.
  • the body has, adjacent its free end, an annular recess 8 which houses a generally complimentary bead 9 carried by a flange 10 depending from a generally planar cover 1 1 forming a closure member.
  • the cover 1 1 is provided with a projecting tongue 12 serving, in use, as a finger grip to facilitate lifting the cover, when required.
  • the cover is connected by way of a flexible hinge 13 to a generally annular sealing portion 14 of the device which lies within and engages the internal wall of the opening 5.
  • the lower end of the sealing portion 14 has a generally radial flange 15 - 4 -
  • the portion 14 is connected to the rigid body 7 by way of inwardly directed generally radial flange portions 18 extending into openings formed in the side wall of the body 7 and serving to connect the body 7 and portion 14 firmly together.
  • the lower end portion of the body 7 is provided with an annular rib 19, of generally arcuate cross-section, which lies within and against the portion 16, serving thereby to enhance the sealing action of the bead 17.
  • the bead 9 of the cover 1 1 , and the recess 8 into which it fits are shaped, in a manner seen more clearly from Figure 2, to enhance the sealing of this bead within the recess.
  • the body 7 is provided with a flange 7a having an inwardly turned flange portion 20 and a generally opposing annular inclined surface 21 of the recess. It is found that, provided the material of the bead 9 is sufficiently resilient, the force fitting of the bead into the recess will generate resilient forces against the surface 21 and the end of the flange portion 20, designated F1 and F2 respectively, which significantly enhances the sealing effect at these surfaces.
  • the general arrangement of the sealing device is the same as that in Figure 1 , but embodies two main modifications.
  • the first of these is that the flange 7 is now without the inwardly turned flange portion 20 of Figure 2 and has substantially planar inner and outer surfaces.
  • the bead 9 of the cover 1 1 engages an annular inclined surface 21 as before, - 5 -
  • the bead 9 of the closure member now engages the underside of the flange 7a.
  • the bead 19 formed on the internal surface of the body 7 now serves to contact the shaft 2 directly for sealing purposes and no longer acts through a portion of the flexible cover- forming member, as was the case in Figure 1.
  • the bead 19 may be replaced by a tongue 19', as illustrated in Figure 4.
  • the sealing device of the invention provides a simple and effective seal between the shaft 2 and housing 3 and embodies a lid which is permanently connected to it, so that the risk of failing to seal over the shaft 2, such as after a servicing operation on the shaft for example, is substantially reduced as compared with conventional devices in which the closure member may be readily removed.
  • the flexible part of the sealing device comprising the cover and sealing portions may conveniently be made as a unitary component and it can be advantageous for this component to be moulded on to the rigid tubular body, forming the connecting flange portions 18 within their receiving openings in the body.
