Definitions
- the invention is related to a rolling element bearing, comprising an outer ring and an inner ring each provided with a raceway facing the other ring and defining a bearing space accommodating rolling elements which are in rolling contact with the raceways, lands bordering the raceway of at least the outer ring, and at least one disc element, such as a seal or shield, connected to the outer ring and extending towards the inner ring.
- Such bearing is known from US-A-5348402.
- the outer ring of this prior art bearing has tapering lands, which promote a flow of lubricant towards the raceway of said ring upon rotation thereof.
- the lubricant generally a grease
- the lubricant is driven towards the raceway under the influence of centrifugal forces which occur upon rotation of the outer ring. This effect is greatly dependent on the rotational speed of the outer ring. As a result a large amount of grease is forced towards the raceway in cases where said rotational speed is high. Such large amount of grease however impairs the proper function of the bearing, and leads to unacceptable high resistance and temperature increases.
- the object of the invention is to provide a rolling element bearing wherein the amount of lubricant dosed into the raceway of the rotating outer ring can be controlled more efficiently.
- the disc element has at least one drainage hole which is located radially inwardly with respect to the land bordering the disc element, for expelling excess lubricant grease from the bearing space under the influence of centrifugal forces upon rotation of the outer ring, and for maintaining a defined amount of grease in the bearing space.
- grease is forced towards the lands of the outer ring, as occurs in the prior art bearings. However, any excess of grease may escape through the drainage holes, in such a way that a limited amount of grease remains within the bearing space.
- the grease left in the bearing space has a surface which tapers from the drainage hole(s) towards the raceway of the outer ring.
- the slope of this amount of grease is selected in such a way that the bulk thereof stays in place and will generally not enter the raceway.
- the oil content however gradually bleeds into the raceway, thus ensuring a long term, stable lubrication of the bearing.
- the radial position of the drainage holes may be selected in dependence of the nominal rotational speed of the outer bearing ring. For relatively low speeds the distance of the drainage holes of the outer ring will be selected relatively large. The centrifugal forces in such case are relatively low, which means that a stable grease configuration can be maintained even in case the slope from the drainage holes towards the raceway is relatively steep.
- the drainage holes should have a smaller distance towards the outer ring.
- the relatively shallow slope thus obtained offers a stable grease configuration under high rotational speeds.
- the rotational speeds should be so high that the centrifugal effects caused thereby may influence the grease, and excess grease escapes via the drainage hole.
- the disc element is connected tightly to the outer ring for preventing leakage of lubricant grease out of the bearing space and the disc element.
- at least two drainage holes are provided in the disc element, which are regularly spaced in circumferential direction.
- two disc elements may be provided enclosing the bearing space.
- the rolling elements may be balls.
- Such bearing also indicated as a deep groove ball bearing, is fit for relatively high rotational speeds which may induce the required centrifugal effect on the grease as addressed therefore.
- the invention is also related to a structure comprising a fixed central member as well as a rotatable member, said members being supported with respect to each other by means of at least a rolling element bearing, comprising an outer ring and an inner ring each provided with a raceway facing the other ring and defining a bearing space accommodating rolling elements which are in rolling contact with the raceways, lands bordering the raceway of at least the outer ring, and at least one disc element, such as a seal or shield, connected to the outer ring and extending towards the inner ring, the fixed member being connected to the inner ring and the rotatable member being connected to the outer ring.
- a rolling element bearing comprising an outer ring and an inner ring each provided with a raceway facing the other ring and defining a bearing space accommodating rolling elements which are in rolling contact with the raceways, lands bordering the raceway of at least the outer ring, and at least one disc element, such as a seal or shield, connected to the outer ring and extending towards the inner ring
- the disc element has at least one drainage hole which is located radially inwardly with respect to the land bordering the disc element, for expelling excess lubricant grease from the bearing space under the influence of centrifugal forces upon rotation of the rotatable member with the outer ring, and for maintaining a defined amount of grease in the bearing space.
- Figure 1 shows a bearing according to the invention.
- Figure 2 shows an enlarged detail of figure 1.
- Figure 3 shows an enlarged detail of a second embodiment.
- the rolling element bearing shown in figure 1 comprises an outer ring 1, an inner ring 2 which are provided respectively with a raceway 3, 4, and a series of rolling balls 5.
- lands 6, 7 have been provided onto the axially outer ends of lands 6 of the outer ring 1 .
- a shield 8 or seal has been provided onto the axially outer ends of lands 6 of the outer ring 1 .
- the shield 8 has been connected to the outer ring 1 in such a way that no leakage between said shield 8 and the land 6 of the outer ring can occur.
- drainage holes 9 have been provided in the shields
- FIG 2 shows an enlarged detail of figure 1, together with the tapering surface 11 of the amount of grease 10.
- This embodiment is in particular fit for relatively high rotation speeds of the outer ring 1.
- the centrifugal forces generated in such case are relatively high, which means that only a relatively shallow slope 11 provides a stable configuration of the amount of grease 10.
- the drainage holes 12 have been located more radially inward in the shield 13. Thereby, an amount of grease is obtained with a relatively steep slope 15 between the drainage holes 12 and the raceway 3 of the outer ring 1.
- This slope 15 is stable only under relatively low centrifugal forces, and is thereby only fit for relatively low rotational speeds of the outer ring 1.
