Definitions
- the present invention relates to a safety syringe for medical use.
- a syringe has a tubular body made of glass or synthetic material, intended to contain the liquid to be injected, one end of which is fitted with an injection needle, and inside which is mounted a piston seal actuable by a protruding rod. of the body on the opposite side to that equipped with the needle.
- the needle is generally covered by a protective element, for example rubber.
- the invention aims to provide a safety syringe, the cost price of which is only slightly increased compared to that of a traditional syringe, and which comprises a device needle protection which automatically covers the latter in the same movement as the injection movement, in order to protect the needle after injection, without requiring additional and voluntary manipulation on the part of the user.
- the syringe body is provided, at its rear end, with at least one radial tab, a tubular piece of length at least equal to the length of the body of syringe increased by the length of the needle and having at least one axial slot extending from its rear end, each slot serving for the passage of a radial tab, this tubular piece being slidably mounted on the body, and the rod of the piston seal is equipped with axial locking means inside the tubular part, with release of this blocking at the end of the stroke of the piston seal, to allow the axial movement of the tubular part to continue, so that the front end of it comes to cover the needle.
- the syringe body is provided, at its rear end, with a sleeve integral with the body and coaxial with it, to which it is connected directly or indirectly by at least one radial tab.
- the syringe rod and the tubular part are integral with one another.
- the operator exerts pressure on the tubular part.
- the tubular part separates from the piston rod, and continues its movement of movement forwards, its front part then covering the needle, thus avoiding any risk of accidental injury using the latter.
- the means for axially blocking the rod of the piston seal inside the tubular part are constituted by flexible tabs integral with the end of the rod, extending the latter, oriented from the inside towards the outside, and the free ends of which form a flange comprising a rib or a groove respectively cooperate with an annular groove or rib formed inside the tubular part, at a distance from the end posterior thereof at least equal to the length of the needle.
- the tabs arranged at the posterior end of the piston rod come to engage in the body of the syringe, which brings these tabs together, and allows a separation between the latter and the tubular part which can thus continue moving it forward.
- the means of axial locking of the piston seal rod inside the tubular part are constituted by a flange formed at the rear end of the piston seal rod and projecting radially towards the exterior, this flange being deformable thanks to the presence of at least one axial slot opening at the rear of the rod, this flange having a chamfered end edge, and being intended to be engaged in an annular groove formed at the inside the tubular part, at a distance from the rear end thereof at least equal to the length of the needle.
- the rear end of the tubular part is closed by a cap ensuring its stiffening.
- the stiffening thus obtained is important, in particular to avoid an undesired separation between the rear end of the rod and the tubular part.
- the sleeve In order to facilitate handling of the syringe, the sleeve has, near its rear end, a complete or partial collar projecting outwards.
- the sleeve forms an integral part of the body of the syringe and is obtained by molding of synthetic material, at the same time as the latter.
- the sleeve, produced independently of the syringe body is integral with a sleeve of internal diameter adapted to the external diameter of the syringe body.
- the tubular part comprises, at its front end, a ruptible extension, intended to cover the needle, before use of the syringe.
- the ruptible extension Before using the syringe, the ruptible extension can be separated from the tubular part, for example by a twisting movement.
- the tubular part is short enough so that before injection, the front end of the syringe body is visible, in order, for example, to allow the clarity of the liquid to be injected to be checked.
- Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a first syringe
- Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale before use;
- Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view along line III-
- Figures 4 and 5 are two views in longitudinal section respectively at the end of injection and after withdrawal of the needle from the injection site;
- Figure 6 is a detail view in longitudinal section of a variant of the attachment of the piston rod to the tubular part;
- Figures 7 and 8 are two views of a variant of the attachment of the rod on the tubular part, respectively in the hooked position and in the uncoupling position;
- Figure 9 is a view of a variant of this syringe, in which the body of the syringe is made of synthetic material in one piece with the sleeve surrounding the body.
- the syringe shown in FIGS. 1 to 5 comprises a syringe body 2 made of glass, one end of which is equipped with a separate injection needle 3, and protected, before use, by a protector 4 shown in phantom in FIG. 1 .
- This syringe body 2 which is intended to contain a liquid 5 to be injected, is closed at its other end by a piston seal 6, actuated by a rod 7.
- On the syringe body 2 is mounted, in the rear part of that -this, a sleeve 8 coaxial with the syringe body, and made integral with the latter by means of a sleeve 9 bearing against the syringe body 2 by means of longitudinal ribs 10.
- the sleeve 8 is connected to the sleeve 9 by means of two radial lugs 12.
- the socket 8 is equipped, at its rear end, with a partial flange 13, projecting outwards.
- This syringe comprises a tubular piece 14 of length substantially equal to the length of the syringe body increased by the length of the needle 3, having, from its rear end, two longitudinal slots 15 each serving for the passage of a tab of connection 12 between the sleeve 8 and the sleeve 9.
- the tubular part 14 is intended to be engaged on the syringe body 2 and to slide relative to the latter inside the sleeve 8.
- the rod 7 of the piston 6 comprises, at its rear end, flexible lugs 16, extending the rod, oriented from the inside to the outside, and whose free ends form a collar 17 facing outwards.
- This flange 17 is intended to be engaged in an annular groove 18 formed inside the tubular part 14, at a distance from the rear end of the latter at least equal to the length of the needle.
- the rear end of the tubular part 14 can be closed off by a cap 19 having a flange 20 which covers the part tubular to prevent possible opening thereof which may result from the presence of the slots 15.
- the front part of the tubular part 14 is provided with a breakable extension 22 at the level of a thinned zone 23.
- This extension is intended to cover the needle before using the syringe.
- the use of the syringe is as follows.
- the operator removes the extension 23 from the tubular part as well as the needle guard 4. He can prick the patient quite normally by holding the syringe by the sleeve 8, between the middle finger and the index finger, and pressing with the thumb on the cap 20 of the tubular part 14.
- the axial displacement of the tubular part 14 results in a corresponding drive of the rod 7 and of the piston 6, causing the injection of the liquid 5 contained in the syringe, towards the body of the patient.
- the tabs 16 forming an elastic cone come into contact with the body of the syringe, the latter tightens the tabs 16, the flange 17 of which escapes from the groove 18 of the tubular part 14, as shown in Figure 4.
- the front part of the tubular part has progressively covered the body of the syringe 2 until it comes, at the end of the injection, into contact with the patient's skin.
- the tubular part 14 allows the needle to be completely covered by the front of the part 14, as shown in FIG. 5, as the needle is withdrawn from the skin.
- the complete syringe is retracted into the tubular part 14, and can be discarded without risk of accidental puncture for the operator or for cleaning personnel.
- Figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment of the attachment of the rear end of the rod 7 inside the tubular part 14.
- the flexible tabs 16 form, at their free end, a flange 17 in the outer face of which a groove 25 is formed, in which is intended to engage an annular rib 26 formed inside the tubular part 14.
- FIGS. 7 and 8 illustrate another embodiment of the invention, in which the same elements are designated by the same references as above.
- the rod 7 is of constant section and has axial slots 27 opening into its rear edge.
- the rod 7 also includes a peripheral flange 28, interrupted by the slots 27. This flange has a beveled outer edge 29.
- the flange 28 is intended to come to engage in an annular groove 30 of the tubular part 14 to produce the assembly of the rod and the tubular part.
- FIG. 9 represents a variant of this syringe, in which the body of the syringe 2 is produced made of synthetic material, and forms a single piece with the socket 8 to which it is connected by lugs 12. In this case, we do not find, as previously, the presence of an intermediate sleeve 9.
- the invention brings a great improvement to the existing technique by providing a safety syringe equipped with an automatic needle protection device at the end of injection, this protection and ant performed without the operator having to execute a voluntary movement.
- the cost price of this syringe is not significantly higher than that of a traditional syringe, insofar as the protective device consists only of an additional part, the tubular part, or two parts additional, insofar as the sleeve is not an integral part of the syringe body.
- the invention is not limited to the sole embodiments of this syringe, described above by way of examples, on the contrary it embraces all variants.
