Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for varying the number of poles on a rotor of an electrical motor by providing the rotor of the motor with a conductor control circuit which can control characteristics of the magnetic field generated by the rotor. Examples of modifiable characteristics include polarity, field distribution, and field strength.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 13 October 1998 (13.10.98); original claims 1-9 replaced by amended claims 1-9 (2 pages)]
1. An electric motor comprising
a rotor having
at least one electrical rotor conductor; and
a rotor control circuit;
wherein the rotor control circuit communicates at least one signal to the at least one rotor conductor to establish and control at least two magnetic poles;
wherein the total number of magnetic poles established can be varied among at least N values wherein N is at least 3.
2. The motor of claim 1 wherein any two adjacent magnetic poles have approximately equal magnitudes, but opposite polarities.
3. The motor of claim 1 wherein N is at least 6.
4. The motor of claim 1 wherein the rotor control circuit communicates the at least one signal to the at least one rotor conductor in response to a rotor input signal.
5. The motor of claim 1 further comprising a stator having a stator control circuit which is used to keep the current number of effective poles on the stator equal to the current number of effective poles on the rotor.
6. An electric motor comprising a rotor having
a rotor control circuit;
the rotor control circuit
positioned on the rotor and capable of electronically altering the pole configuration of the rotor among at least N different configurations wherein N is at least 3 and each pole configuration has a different number of effective magnetic poles.
7. The electric motor of claim 7 wherein each pole has a coil associated with it and each coil has a switching circuit associated with it such that each switching circuit can change the polarity of the associated pole by reversing the direction of flow of a current through the coil.
8. The electric motor of claim 8 wherein each of the P switching circuits is configured as an H bridge.
9. The electric motor of claim 8 wherein each of the P switching circuits comprises a complementary pair of switching transistors.
