Definitions
- This invention is directed to an electrical connector and more particularly to an electrical connector for receiving an electronic module.
- SIMs subscriber identification modules
- Electronic modules such as subscriber identification modules (SIMs) are well known in the communications industry. They are typically small electronic cards, approximately 25 x 15 mm, which contain information to specifically identify a subscriber, for example a telephone subscriber. The modules are read by electronic devices such as telephones and allow a particular user to access the device.
- SIMs subscriber identification modules
- the support arm does not serve to reliably secure a SIM 1 into the housing.
- the SIM 1 can unintentionally be removed from the housing 3 by inadvertent depression of the support arm 4.
- there is a translating motion between the contact pads on the SIM and the electrical contacts of the housing causing a wiping action over the pads of the SIM. Since SIMs are intended to have a high mating and unmating cycle life, excessive wiping action tends to prematurely wear the contact pads.
- an electrical connector for receiving an electronic module and having an insulative base which is mountable to a printed circuit board and supports electrical contacts which are also connected to the printed circuit board.
- a cover for receiving the module is rotatably mounted to the base and securable thereto at its open end by the cooperation of a pivot bar mechanism with a locking projection.
- Figure l shows a three-dimensional view of the electronic module connector according to this invention.
- Figure 2 shows an exploded three-dimensional view of the major components of the electronic module connector.
- Figure 3 shows a three-dimensional view of the electronic module connector having an electronic module inserted therein in the closed and locked position.
- Figure 4 shows a top view of the electronic module connector in the closed position prior to locking.
- Figure 5 shows a cross sectional view of the electronic module connector of Figure 4 taken along the line 5-5.
- Figure 6 shows a three dimensional view of an alternate embodiment of the electronic module connector according to this invention.
- An electronic module receiving electrical connector 10 is provided having an insulative base 12 and electrical contacts 18 secured therein.
- the electrical contacts 18 have surface mount tails 24 which are surface mountable to a printed circuit board (not shown) .
- a cover 14 is rotatably attached to the base 12 and features a card receiving slot 22 and locking projections 20 at its open end.
- the insulative base 12 has a pivot bar mechanism 16 disposed at its open end for engaging locking projections 20 of the cover 14.
- the pivot bar mechanism 16 is designed so that the locking projections 20 fit into U-shaped openings 26 of the pivot bar 16.
- the pivot bar 16 is rotated one quarter turn in order to secure the locking projections into the U-shaped openings 26.
- the base 12 is formed of an insulating material and has a card mating face 46 provided with openings through which electrical contacts 18 extend.
- the electrical contacts 18 extend from the card mating face 46 to surface mount tails 24 for mounting to a printed circuit board.
- the contacts 18 are secured to the housing by well known securing means.
- a pair of pivot bar support arms 28 extend from a card receiving end 29.
- Each of the pivot bar support arms 28 has a support projection 30 extending from a side face 31 thereof.
- a snap projection 32 is also provided along the card receiving end 29 of the housing 12.
- a pair of U-shaped channels 42 are disposed along the sides of the base 12 adjacent a pivot end 25.
- the U-shaped channels 42 are profiled to have circular indentations 44 extending from the U- shaped channel 42 into the base 12.
- a pivot bar 16 is provided for mounting on the pivot bar receiving arms 28
- a square main body portion 40 is disposed in the center of the pivot bar 16 with U- shaped securing channels 26 extending therefrom.
- the U- shaped securing channels 26 extend from one edge of the square main body portion 40 and have a pivot bar support arm receiving opening 38 along the opposite edge of the square body portion 40.
- Adjacent to the pivot bar support opening 38, the channel 26 is profiled to have a semicircular wall 34.
- a locking projection 36 is provided on the inside of the channel 26 opposite the partially circular wall 34.
- a cover 14 is provided for mounting to the base 12 at a pivot end 25.
- a card receiving slot 22 is formed by guide rails 21 which extend from inner side walls 23 of the cover 14 adjacent to its outer surface.
- a pair of mounting arms 48 extend towards the pivot end 25 of the base 12.
- a pivot projection 50 is provided along the inside surface of each mounting arm 48.
- a pair of locking arms 52 are provided and extend towards the card receiving end 29 of the housing 12.
- a circular locking projection 20 is provided along the inside wall of each locking arm 52. Assembly of the connector will be described with reference again to Figure 2. Contacts 18 are loaded into the base 12 by well known means.
- the pivot bar 16 is mounted to the pivot bar support arms 28 of the base 12 by simply snap fitting the projections 30 into the U-shaped channel 26 such that the projections 30 are locked between the semi-circular surface 34 and the locking projection 36.
- the cover 14 is then assembled to the housing 12 at the pivot end 25 by inserting each of the pivot projections 50 into the respective U-shaped channels 42 so that the pivot projections 50 lock into the circular indentations 44 extending into the housing.
- Figure 1 shows the connector 10 with the cover 14 being in the open position prior to receiving an electronic module such as a SIM.
- An electronic module is first inserted into the card receiving slot 22 and the cover 14 is rotated downward towards the base 12 such that the locking tabs 20 fit into the U-shaped channels 26 as shown in Figure 4.
- the connector is shown in Figure 4 having an electronic module inserted therein in the closed but unlocked position whereby it is evident that the pivot bar 16 is secured to the securing projections 30 of the pivot bar support arms 28 and the locking projections 20 of the cover also fit into the U-shaped channel 26 adjacent to the pivot bar projections 30.
- the pivot bar 16 is then rotated one quarter turn to its locked position as shown in Figure 3.
- FIG. 5 shows a cross sectional view where the contacts 18 are sprung slightly downward and are in electrical connection with pads on the electronic module.
- the pivot bar 16 is shown here in the closed and locked position, and it should be understood that once the pivot bar 16 is rotated to the open position (Fig.4) , the contacts 18 will force the cover 14 and electronic module to pop up for easy removal .
- FIG 6 an alternate embodiment of the electronic module connector is shown. This embodiment features a similar base 12 and cover 14 having the pivot bar mechanism 16 ' mounted to cover 16 instead of the base 12.
- the securing projections 20' are snap fit into the U-shaped channels 26', and the locking projections 30' enter the U-shaped channels 26' as the cover is lowered into the closed position.
- the pivot bar mechanism 16 ' can then be similarly rotated to lock the cover 16 to the base 12.
- the advantage of this invention is that it provides a reliable electrical connection to an electronic module without prematurely wearing the pads of the electronic module.
- An additional advantage is that a simple mechanism is provided for easy insertion of the module into the connector and easily securing the module therein.
