Abstract

An inflatable load carrying device for vehicle roofs or boot is disclosed. The device is an inflatable section (7) with pliable straps (2) attached to each end and an adjustable, releasable fasterner (3, 4) used to connect the straps. The device is laid across the vehicle roof and the straps (2) are passed through the door openings and attached (3, 4) and tightened (5). The closing of the vehicle doors locks the device in place and a load can be fastened by the use of tie-down points (6) and cushioned by the inflatable section. The device can be used singularly or in multiples.

Description

INFLATABLE LOAD CARRIER FOR VEHICLES ROOFS
This invention relates to improvements in devices Cor load carrying on vehicle roofs or boots.
The improvements in the aerodynamics of modern motor vehicles has necessitated the removal of the gutter from above the vehicle doors, which have traditionally been used to attach rooi carry bars or racks to the vehicle roof for load carrying. Some vehicle manufacturers have provided special attachment points but,m genera1 ,universa1 fitments are no longer possible. The aerodynamic drag and consequent noise created by conventional roof bars and racks. ,particularly when not in use,has always been of some concern, but it has not been practical to remove them between usage, and it has proven impractical to attach loads directly to the vehicle roof due to the possibility of creasing the thin metal or damaging the paintwork,or both.
The present invention overcomes these problems by providing a tubular section of any practical cross sectional shape and able to be inflated by mouth, that is laid across the vehicle roof and has tie-downs for attachment of the load. The inflatable section cushions and pneumatically distributes the load equally across the width and length of its section. The inflatable section has a pliable strap attached to either end of its section and each end of the strap has one half of an adjustable ,releaseable fastener attached to it.The inflated tubular section is laid across the vehicle roof and the straps are passed through the door openings and each half is connected inside the cockpit by the adiustable, releaseable fastener with the adjustable end of the strap being used to tighten the assembly. When the vehicle doors are c losed, the pliability ot the strapping allows coniormity to the dooi frame contoui s ,without permanently distorting I he scaling rubbers and the contours provide a locking action to the straps. The load tie-downs can be attached directly to the strapping or can be part of or attached to the inflatable section. The inflatable section/strapping units can be used singularly or in multiples according to load attachment necessities.
In one form of the invention,an inflatable section of tubulai form and with its ends sealed, has an inflation valve in one end and a pliable strap attached to each end, with the othei ends of the pliable having the halves of an adjustable, relcaseable fastener attached and having suitable tie-down points located at regular intervals along the inflatable section.
In another form of the invention, the strapping continues along the full length of the inflatable section and flexible tie-downs are attached directly to the strapping, and at regulai intervals.
The inf latable, tubular cushioning section may be of any practical cross sectional shape and may be made of rubber or any synthetic elastic material and covered with a suitable fabric, such as cotton or nylon,or the section may be made ol a composite ,elastic material, the material being of adequate strength but being able to be inflated by mouth. The pliable straps may be made of woven cotton,nyIon,or any suitable soft, pliable material of adequate strength.
The adjustable/releaseable fasteners may be made of plastic,meta1 or any suitable material and may be of any suitable form.
The load tie-downs may be made ot woven cotton, nylon,or any suitably flexible material or the tie-down eyelets may be fitted directly to the inflatable section,or the load may be directly fastened to the pliable straps.
The accompanying drawings will assist with the understanding of the invention.
Fig 1 shows an example of an inflatable load carrying device according to this invention.
Fig 2 shows another example of an inflatable load carrying device according to this invention. Fig 3 shows the inflatable load carrying device as in Fig 1 fitted to a vehicle root, and with a load attached.
With reference to Fig l,it can be seen that the inflatable load carrying device according to this invention consists of an inflatable tubular section 7 with pliable straps 2 attached to either end and having one half of the adjustable/releaseable fastener 3 attached to one end of the strap and the other half of the fastener 4 attached to the other strap. The strapping is tightened by the adjustable end b and the tubular section inflated by the valve 10. The tie-down points 6 are used to attach the load.
With reference to Fig 2,anotheι example of the invention is shown with the strapping 2 being continuous across the length of the inflatable section 7 but with the tie-downs 6 being attached to the strapping.
With reference to Fig 3, the example in Fig 1 is shown attached to a vehicle roof 8 with a load 9 shown fastened in place. The load is tied down with ropes 11.The vehicles closed dooi s 12 arc shown locking the pliable straps in place.
