Ledit appareil permet d'établir une communication audiovisuelle entre un consommateur et un vendeur de biens et de services, dans laquelle il est possible de remplir par système interactif des formulaires de demandes permettant d'effectuer des transactions dans des domaines tels que la banque, les assurances, les titres, la vente de produits, les contrats de services, etc.. On peut éventuellement brancher des dispositifs d'entrée/sortie au dispositif de connexion afin d'imprimer la demande ou le contrat et rendre possible la privatique. La transaction est lancée par le consommateur qui sollicite le dispositif de connexion pour qu'il lui fournisse le numéro de communication de vendeur setrouvant dans un répertoire de réseau ou dans un répertoire personnel stocké dans le dispositif de connexion. Lorsque le vendeur demandé apparaît par défilement dans une zone mise en évidence sur l'écran de télévision, le consommateur appuie sur un bouton par l'intermédiaire d'une télécommande portative, à la suite de quoi le dispositif de connexion établit une connexion visioconférence. Si le service complémentaire du vendeur est occupé, l'appareil fera un retour temporaire vers une fonction précédemment active de télévision ou de privatique, afin de faire patienter le consommateur pendant que le numéro du vendeur sélectionné est à nouveau composé. Lorsque la communication est établie, le retour temporaire est interrompu et un signal de retour d'appel est envoyé au poste téléphonique du consommateur de façon à ce qu'il puisse converser facilement avec le représentant du vendeur.
