Definitions
- the present invention relates to a container cap, especially useful for closing a container of liquid container gas under pressure, such as a carbonated beverage.
- caps for this purpose to be screw engaged on the container and to include a resilient sealing wad or formations for sealing with the container rim. Unscrewing of the cap can result in a sudden release of pressure causing propulsion of the cap from the container. This can cause injury and, in any event, the sudden release of pressure can cause loss of the liquid contents and damage by such contents.
- the present mvention reduces the risk of such injury, damage and loss of contents.
- the invention also provides an improved seal and reduces costs by avoiding the need for a sealing wad.
- GB-A-2120219 discloses a cap having an inward, annular projection from the top of the cap and an annular sealing member extending from the cap skirt radially beyond the projection.
- the sealing member is clamped between the ⁇ im of a container and the projection providing an annular chamber between the sealing member, the top and the projection.
- the projection has slots, which communicate the interior of the container with the chamber. This provides pressure on the sealing member from the container, so that increasing pressure improves the seal.
- GB-A-2148861 discloses a cap, which seeks to overcome this problem.
- This document also discloses a cap with an inward, annular projection from the top of the cap and an annular sealing member extending from the skirt, to be clamped between the rim of the container and the projection, so as to define an annular chamber.
- a bleed hole in the sealing member communicates the chamber with the region around the container neck.
- a second sealing member engages the outer edge of the rim of the container and this prevents venting of the container interior to atmosphere.
- the second seal is released from the container rim to permit venting.
- This arrangement has the disadvantage of requiring an additional sealing member to avoid atmospheric communication with the top of the sealing member and risk of contamination.
- the sealing members have to be made to close tolerances to permit sealing by both members and there is also risk, during opening, of the second seal preventing venting, so that there can still be a sudden release of pressure.
- This arrangement also lacks the advantage of GB-A-2120129. Increased pressure in the container will act to reduce the sealing effect.
- the present invention overcomes these disadvantages in a very simple manner. There is no need for a second sealing member, no risk of atmospheric contamination and the container pressure acts to assist the sealing effect.
- the present invention provides a container cap having a skirt, with formations for rotary engagement and disengagement with a container, and a top the top having an inward, annular projection, an annular, inward sealing member is provided, sealingly engageable with the rim of a container, the member being deflectable by the container rim, during engagement of the cap, to a position in which an annular chamber is defined between the sealing member the top of the cap, and the projection and a bleed hole through the sealing member and communicating the chamber; characterised in that the sealing member extends from the top towards the skirt and is encircled by the projection, whereby the blood hole provides communication of the chamber with the interior of the container, in use, and permits venting of the container when the sealing member disengages from the projection during opening.
- the cap shown is a one-piece, injection, plastics moulding and comprises a top 11 and a skirt 12, with a peripheral portion 13 of the top extending at an acute angle to the axis of the cap and to the skirt.
- the skirt has an internal screw thread 14 made up of discrete sections with gaps between (not shown). This is a known construction both to save on material and to allow release of gas from a container through the gaps in the screw thread.
- the screw thread engages with a screw thread 16 of a container neck 17, the neck having a rim 18.
- the top 11 of the cap has a dependent sealing member 20 in the interior of the cap.
- the member is elongate in cross-section and curves towards the skirt 12.
- the member is annular and concentric with the skirt.
- the member is resiliently flexible and sealingly engages with the rim 20 of the container neck, with the cap screwed down on the neck.
- the peripheral portion 13 of the top has first and second annular projections 21,22.
- the first projection surrounds the root of the sealing member 20 and the second projection surrounds the first projection, the projections being radially spaced from each other and from the sealing member.
- Each projection is of triangular cross-section and the second projection extends to an axial position beyond the first projection.
- a first chamber 23 is defined between the sealing member 20, the first projection 21 and the top 11 of the cap.
- a second chamber 24 is defined between the two projections, the sealmg member and the top of the cap.
- the first chamber 23 is closed except for a bleed hole 25 through the sealing member 20.
- the bleed hole communicates the first chamber with the region within the sealing member and with the interior of the container 26.
- the second chamber 24 is closed.
- gas under pressure from the interior 26 of the container leaks through the bleed hole 25 into the first chamber 23, thereby pressurising the chamber. This increases the sealing pressure on the sealing member 20.
- the cap is unscrewed, the first projection 21 releases initially from the sealing member 20, so that gas under pressure escapes to the second chamber 24, thereby reducing the pressure, while the container is still closed by the sealing member 20. Further unscrewing of the cap, releases the second projection 22 from the sealing member, so that gas escapes through the screw thread. Meantime, pressure in the container interior is slowly released through the bleed hole 25.
- the cap can be repetitively screwed back onto the container and provides good sealing, despite undulations in the container rim, e.g. where the container is made of glass.
