  • This invention relates to a dispensing pack for fluid materials such as lubricants and is particular concerned with a dispensing pack for lubricants such as automotive transmission fluids and gear oils.
  • Packs usually constructed of rigid plastics materials such as high density polyethylene, are universally available for the containment and subsequent dispensation of lubricants such as transmission fluids. Such packs often have a closure which provides some type of dispenser to assist the user when dispensing the contents.
  • closure caps which incorporate an extensible, and bendable, dispensing tube which is pulled out from the cap at the site of dispensation to assist the user in reaching the ingress port for the lubricant, which may be in a relatively inaccessible position.
  • While such packs do assist in the delivery of transmission fluids, and lubricants in general, they do not overcome all the problems experienced by lubricant consumers.
  • the consumer experiences difficulty in delivery if he has to dispense the lubricant to an aperture which is not only difficult of access but which also requires delivery in a somewhat upward or sideways direction.
  • These difficulties are particularly acute when the ambient temperature is low, as the lubricant viscosity can be such that it does not readily flow from the container.
  • the problems are particularly acute for transmission fluids, because of the rigid nature of the packaging material. Indeed it is often necessary for the user to resort to warming the pack before he attempts to deliver the contents.
  • the present invention seeks to overcome the above problems and provide a dispensing pack which is of sufficient versatility to operate effectively in a variety of locations and cope with variation in ambient temperatures.
  • a dispensing pack for fluids comprising a substantially cylindrical body fitted with a dispensing cap, a flexible bag liner disposed within the cylindrical body for containment of the fluid to be dispensed, the flexible bag being sealing ly attached to the body adjacent the cap, and displaceable end closure means for the cylindrical body adapted for displacement within the cylindrical body towards the cap by exertion of pressure so as to collapse the bag and deliver fluid through the dispensing cap.
  • the cylindrical body is suitably made of polyethylene, polypropylene or other rigid material, it is conveniently sized dependant on the actual nature of the fluid to be dispensed. For lubricants, preferred sizes are of the order of a litre or half a litre.
  • the body is preferably provided at its upper end with an external screw thread to receive the dispensing cap.
  • the opposite end of the body preferably is formed with an inwardly extending rim which serves as a retainer for the displaceable end closure means.
  • the displaceable end closure means is preferably in the form of a rigid disc, for example constructed or polyethylene or polypropylene, which rests on the rim of the cylindrical body and which is of sufficient strength that it can withstand pressure to move it upwardly within the cylindrical body towards the cap.
  • a rigid disc for example constructed or polyethylene or polypropylene
  • the disc may be sized to receive the operating plunger of a standard mastic delivery gun.
  • the flexible bag liner may suitably be constructed of foil and low or high density polyethylene. It is preferably attached to the upper portion of the cylindrical body for example by gluing, heat sealing or sonic welding.
  • the dispensing cap may be of various designs dependent on the intended use of the pack contents. Thus it may have incorporated therein a dispensing nozzle, which, in turn, may be rigidly built into the cap construction or extensible by the user at the dispensing station for the fluid.
  • Fig 1 is a diagrammatic and exploded representation of a filled dispensing pack intended for use to dispense transmission fluid
  • Fig 2 is a view corresponding to Fig 1 but after delivery of most of the pack contents
  • Fig 3 is a view similar to Fig 1 showing the use of a gun to dispense the contents.
  • the dispensing pack comprises a rigid generally cylindrical body 2, of plastics material such as high density polyethylene or polypropylene or alternatively of metal.
  • the upper portion of body 2 is formed with an external screw thread 3 to receive a cap generally indicated at 4.
  • the cap 4 is formed with dispensing means 5 which are constructed in such a way that they can be drawn out at the dispensing site to provide a delivery nozzle (not shown).
  • the lower portion of the body 2 is formed with an inwardly extending rim 7 which provides a seating for a disc 8 (suitably constructed of polyethylene or polypropylene).
  • the body 2 has a flexible bag liner 9 (suitably constructed of a laminate of foil and polyethylene) which is welded to the upper portion of the body 2 in the region of neck 11.
  • the assembly of body 2, disc 8 and liner 9 is filled with transmission fluid 10 before application of cap 4 (Fig 1).
  • the filled container is subsequently taken by the end user to the point of intended delivery and the nozzle 5 extended to its delivery position.
  • the user exerts pressure on the disc 8 to force it sideways and upwardly to collapse the liner 9 and drive the contents through to the delivery nozzle 5 at the desired delivery rate (Fig 2).
  • the pressure exerted will depend on the ambient temperature and viscosity of the fluid but will be possible by hand or with the assistance of a nearby tool such as a hammer handle or screwdriver.
  • a standard mastic gun 12 can be employed to dispense the contents.
  • the disc 8 is sized to snugly receive the plunger 13 of the gun 12 which gun can be positioned over the body 2.
  • a dispensing pack for fluids comprising a substantially cylindrical body fitted with a dispensing cap, a flexible bag liner disposed within the cylindrical body for containment of the fluid to be dispensed, the flexible bag being sealingly attached to the body adjacent the cap, and displaceable end closure means for the cylindrical body adapted for displacement within the cylindrical body towards the cap by exertion of pressure so as to collapse the bag and deliver fluid through the dispensing cap.
  • a dispensing pack according to Claim 2 wherein the displaceable end closure means comprises a rigid disc which rests on said rim.
