  • the present invention relates to telephone systems. It is of particular application to mobile telephone systems, but can also find application in other systems.
  • the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) cellular telephone system currently supports three speech coding algorithms, the 1 3 kbit/s "full-rate” codec (coder-decoder), the 1 3kbit/s “enhanced full-rate” codec and the 5.6 kbit/s "half-rate” codec.
  • Control programs, based on these codec algorithms are stored in read-only memory (ROM) within the telephone and the fixed part of the network, typically in a radio base station control system. It is envisaged that improved algorithms, providing more accurate or faster coding, will be developed in the future, but if the customer is to make use of such an algorithm he has to replace his telephone by one programmed with the new codec algorithm. Conflict can arise between the customer and the network operator over who should bear the cost of such replacement.
  • This arrangement ensures that program data is only transmitted if the program data is required for the connection currently being set up. This reduces the amount of data transmitted, and reduces the likelihood of memory in the second element being over-written unnecessarily
  • the appropriateness of program data may be determined in relation to the type of signal to be transmitted, the quality of the signal, the memory capacity of the second element, and the capabilities of any intermediate links.

Abstract

Durant le processus d'enregistrement qui établit une liaison entre un téléphone mobile et une station de base d'un réseau téléphonique mobile, le téléphone acquiert des données de programme provenant du réseau, pour commander son fonctionnement. Cela permet de fournir automatiquement au téléphone mobile les améliorations du système. Le téléphone mobile (1) et la station de base (10) ont chacun une mémoire (7, 19) pour stocker des données de programme relatives à un ou plusieurs modes de fonctionnement. Pendant le processus d'enregistrement, la station de base (10) émet un signal qui indique un mode de fonctionnement préféré. Le téléphone mobile (1) répond par un signal qui indique si sa mémoire (7) contient déjà des données de programme pour ce mode de fonctionnement. Si le signal indique que non, la station de base (10) émet les données de programme nécessaires vers le téléphone mobile (1) et tous deux peuvent ensuite utiliser ce mode de fonctionnement. Un contrôle est effectué pour établir si le téléphone mobile (1) est capable d'accepter les données. Dans la négative (par exemple si sa mémoire est insuffisante), le processus est répété avec différents programmes jusqu'à ce qu'en soit identifié un pour lequel la capacité de la mémoire (7) est suffisante. Si un appel est lancé avant que ce processus soit achevé, celui-ci est écourté, de telle sorte que la station de base (10) et le téléphone mobile (1) identifient les programmes déjà stockés dans la mémoire (7) mais ne cherchent pas à en charger un autre car cela pourrait retarder l'établissement de la communication. Si la station de base (10) ne reçoit pas de réponse à son indication initiale d'un programme préféré, comme ce serait le cas si elle établissait le contact avec un téléphone mobile ordinaire (non programmable), elle fonctionne selon un mode par défaut.
