Abstract
Dispositif utilisable dans le domaine de la protection de l'environnement dans le but d'éliminer le pétrole brut et les produits pétroliers présents à la surface d'une masse d'eau. Ce dispositif comporte au moins une chemise élastique poreuse en matériau ignifuge renfermant une charge de graphite oxydé. Cette chemise peut se présenter sous la forme d'un matelas, d'un manchon ou d'un sac, et elle est de préférence munie de parois doubles entre lesquelles est enfermée la charge. Le dispositif peut comporter un boîtier rigide et, lors de l'utilisation, la chemise constitue une enveloppe autour du boîtier. Avant l'utilisation du dispositif, la charge occupe une petite partie du volume interne de la chemise. Le rapport entre le volume de la chemise et celui de la charge est compris entre 10:1 et 25:1 environ. Le dispositif peut être plié sans difficultés et transporté dans un état peu encombrant jsuqu'au lieu où il doit être mis en oeuvre. Peu avant l'utilisation du dispositif, on porte la charge à une température comprise entre 600 et 1000 °C de manière à transformer le graphite oxydé en graphite cellulaire dont le volume se multiplie par dix ou vingt jusqu'à ce qu'il occupe la totalité du volume à l'intérieur de la chemise. Le carbone cellulaire est hydrophobe, sa densité est comprise entre 4,5 et 10 g/l, et sa capacité de sorption de pétrole brut et de produits pétroliers est comprise entre 30 et 35 g par g de sorbant. Grâce au caractère ignifuge du sorbant et de la chemise, ce dispositif peut s'utiliser pour lutter contre les nappes de pétrole en feu et pour éliminer les nappes peu étendues en leur mettant le feu intentionnellement.
