It is normally introduced to a packaging machine in the form of a collapsed carrier, after which it is opened or erected and loaded with the articles to be packaged. Depending on the design, loading is done either by inserting the articles from the top onto a preformed bottom panel or by lowering the erected carrier over the articles and then forming the bottom panel.
