  • a portion of the single layer tubular fabric spaced from the turned welt portion desirably is formed from a modified knit configuration to form the crotch portion. Particularly desired is a knit configuration which forms a pile for forming the wearer contacting side of the crotch portion.
  • the blank provided by this method can then be readily formed into a panty-type undergarment. This is done by cutting and removing first and second spaced areas to define first and second leg openings and a crotch portion therebetween. The crotch portion between the leg openings is joined to the back portion of the tubular blank to form a completed panty.

  • FIG. 1 depicts the panty 10 of the invention having a bulge control band portion 12.
  • the bulge control band portion 12 of the panty 10 is desirably folded downwardly by the wearer in order to provide bulge control for the wearer's lower abdominal region. It is particularly desirable for the entire bulge control band 12 to be folded downwardly, as this orientation of the band provides particularly effective bulge control for the entire abdominal region. Because the control band extends circumferentially around the panty, the control band controls bulges around the hips and back of the wearer as well as the abdominal region.
  • Figs. 2 and 3 show front and rear views, respectively, of a preferred embodiment of a panty according to the present invention, as shown generally at 10.
  • the panty 10 includes a circularly knit body including a control band portion 12 and a body portion 14 which is integrally knit with the control band portion.
  • the body portion 14 has a front panty portion 14A and a rear panty portion 14B.
  • First and second leg openings 16 are provided, preferably in the front panty portion 14A, to accommodate the legs of a wearer.
  • the control band portion 12 and the body portion 14 can be respectively proportioned so that upper portions of the leg openings 16 abut the control band portion 12; alternatively a number of courses defining the body portion 14 can separate upper portions of the leg openings 16 and the control band portion 12.
  • the leg openings 16 are preferably substantially oval shaped, and have their bottom portions located proximate the bottom of the panty.
  • the leg openings 16 also define a crotch portion 18 therebetween.
  • a seamline 22 connects the front panty portion 14A to the rear panty portion 14B at the crotch portion 18.
  • This seamline may be formed by any conventional means of attaching fabric pieces together, though a sewed seamline is particularly preferred.
  • elastic banding 20 is preferably provided around each of the leg openings 16 so that the banding reduces the diameter of the leg openings. In this way, the leg openings can readily expand to allow a wearer's legs to enter the leg openings 16 and contract to securely grip the legs and maintain the panty in its proper position on the wearer's body.
  • the control band portion 12 is in the form of a turned welt; thus it has a cylindrical configuration about the upper end of the circularly knit panty 10.
  • the control band portion 12 defines a walewise length A.
  • the body portion 14 defines a second walewise length B on its front panty portion 14A which extends from the control band 12 to the bottom 17 of leg openings 16.
  • This length B is about 1.5 - 3 times, and preferably about 2 times, the length A of the control band portion 12.
  • This length of the control band portion allows the control band to be folded downwardly to compressively control the abdominal bulge of a wearer.
  • the rear panty portion 14B of the body portion 14 defines a walewise length C.
  • the length C in the particular embodiment depicted in Figs. 1 and 2 is shown as being greater than the length B in order to provide greater material fullness for the rear panty, or buttocks covering, portion 14B of the panty 10.
  • the lengths B and C could be equal, provided that length B is still about 1.5 - 3 times the length A of the control band portion 12.
  • the control band portion 12 also has a predetermined coursewise resistance to stretching which is greater than the coursewise resistance to stretching of the body portion 14.
  • the panty is capable of providing a greater degree of compressive force to a portion of a wearer's body positioned underneath the control band portion 12 than underneath the body portion 14.
  • FIG. 4 depicts an alternative embodiment of the panty 10 according to the invention, in which the panty is provided in a "bikini-style" form.
  • the panty in 10 this embodiment also includes a control band portion 12, a body portion 14, leg openings 16, a crotch portion 18, and a seam 22 where front and rear panty portions are joined together.
  • the control band portion 12 has a walewise length D and the body portion 14 has a walewise length

  • the body portion 32 is integrally knit to the turned welt portion 30 and desirably includes a region 34 proximate the bottom of the blank which has a modified knit configuration for forming the crotch portion 18 of the panty 10.

  • the turned welt portion 30 is formed as a tubular cylindrical member to include a first side 30A and a second side 30B.
  • the body portion 32 is preferably knit to this turned welt portion 30.
  • a first series of courses is circularly knit in the form of a turned welt 30 to define a cylindrical tubular band portion having a first tubular length which defines the walewise length of the panty control band.
  • a second series of courses is knit to the turned welt 30 to define a single layer tubular fabric length which is approximately 2 times the walewise length of the turned welt portion, thereby forming panty blank 31.
  • a portion of this single layer fabric length remote from the turned welt preferably has a modified knit configuration to form the crotch portion 34 of the blank 31.
  • the blank 31 is then cut to define leg openings and a crotch region.
  • the cutting is preferably performed along curved lines 36, 38 and 40, as shown in FIG. 5, in order to produce a panty which has greater material fullness along the rear panty portion.
  • the cutting could be performed to form panties having any conventional configuration, such as french-cut or thong style.
  • the crotch portion 34 is then attached to the back of the blank, as shown at seam 22, and elastic banding 20 is preferably attached about the leg openings 16.
  • the elastic banding is attached about the leg openings while the banding is in a stretched condition. When the attachment is completed and the elastic banding is allowed to retract, the leg openings 16 are reduced in diameter.
  • leg openings 16 can readily expand to allow a wearer's legs to enter the leg openings and contract to securely grip the wearer's legs and maintain the panty in its proper position on the wearer's body. It is noted that the order of these steps could be modified, with the seaming of the crotch portion 34 to the rear of the panty blank being performed prior to cutting of the leg openings 16, for example.

Abstract

La présente invention concerne un sous-vêtement (10) et notamment une culotte pourvue d'une ceinture (20) de contention du bourrelet abdominal destinée à rendre moins apparent le bourrelet abdominal. Ce sous-vêtement est tricoté en tube pour présenter une ceinture (12) de contention intégrée et des parties formant corps (14). Le tricotage de la ceinture de contention lui procure une plus grande résistance à l'étirement que la partie formant corps. Cette ceinture de contention (12) est par ailleurs caractérisée par une longueur prédéterminée dans le sens de la colonne de mailles, la partie formant corps présentant dans le sens de la colonne de mailles une longueur d'environ 1,5 à 3 fois la longueur de la ceinture de contention. L'invention concerne également un procédé et un patron de réalisation de la culotte à ceinture de contention du bourrelet abdominal.
