29. An apparatus for use in processing fluids comprising: a tubular porous element having first and second ends and interior and exterior major surfaces extending between the first and second ends; a non-perforated housing having first and second ends and a tubular portion extending between the first and second ends and disposed about the tubular porous element; a first housing end piece sealed directly to the non-perforated housing and to the tubular porous element at the respective first ends and including a first opening communicating with the interior of the non-perforated housing; and a second housing end piece sealed directly to the non-perforated housing and to the tubular porous element at the respective second ends and including a second opening communicating with the interior of the non-perforated housing.
30. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein the first and second opening are in fluid communication with the interior of the tubular porous element.
31. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein the first and second housing end pieces respectively include a third and a fourth openings in fluid communication with the exterior of the tubular porous element
32. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein the first and second opening are in fluid communication with the exterior of the tubular porous element.
33. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein the first opening is in fluid communication with the interior of the tubular porous element and the second opening is in fluid communication with the exterior of the tubular porous element.

38. The apparatus of claim 37 including an inlet in fluid communication with an interior surface of the tubular porous element and an outlet in fluid communication with the fluid flow grooves whereby fluid flows through the inlet, through the porous element, through the fluid flow grooves and out the outlet.
39. The apparatus of claim 38 including an annular channel disposed at the second end of the housing in fluid communication with the outlet and the fluid flow grooves whereby fluid may flow from each of the fluid flow grooves into the annular channel and then through the outlet.
40. A filter assembly comprising: a housing having at least an inlet port and an outlet port; a cylindrical filter element including filter media wherein both end surfaces of the filter media are joined to the housing by an irreversible welded joint.
41. The filter assembly of claim 40 wherein the housing includes a cylindrical wall portion and first and second end portions and wherein the inlet is disposed in the cylindrical wall portion near the first end portion and the outlet is about centrally in the second end portion.
42. The filter assembly of claim 40 wherein the housing includes a core having first and second end portions respectively joined to the first and second end portions of the housing, the core being disposed about the outlet port.
43. The filter assembly of claim 40 wherein the housing includes a vent nozzle provided in the upper portion of the housing at the position corresponding to the area in which the downstream liquid is accommodated.
5 9
44. The filter assembly of claim 40 wherein the welded joint if formed through thermal fusion.
45. A filter assembly comprising: a housing having an inlet and an outlet; a cylindrical filter element having a filter media including first and second end surfaces, an end cap, and a cage disposed about the filter media, the first end surface being joined in a the end cap via an irreversible welded/thermally fused joint and the second end surface being joined to the housing via an irreversible welded/thermally fused joint.
