Definitions
- Control handle adaptable to electronic game console
- the present invention relates generally to electronic game consoles and in particular a game control joystick adaptable to a portable electronic game console.
- the games that can be played with this type of console generally rely on a simple principle of moving a mobile (character, animal, object ...) on the screen in four directions: up, down, right, left, to avoid obstacles or reach a goal.
- the game console has a control element generally in the form of a cross with 4 branches. The movement of the mobile in each of the directions is obtained by pressing on one of the branches of the cross using the index finger or another finger, the pressure exerted causes the spring-mounted branch to sink and the closure a contact causes the mobile to move on the screen in the desired direction.
- the object of the invention is to provide a controller which easily adapts to any game console of the above type and which allows the movement of a movable on the screen in any direction by moving the joystick in the desired direction.
- the object of the invention is therefore a joystick which can be adapted to any game console of the type mentioned above comprising a first movable part formed by an element with axial symmetry comprising a base resting on
- control element and having dimensions substantially equal to those of the control element and of a handle secured to the element with axial symmetry and perpendicular to the control element when the lever is at rest.
- a second hollow part is fixed on the console and has an opening through which the handle passes and the width of which is sufficient for the movements of the handle in each of the directions to cause pressure exerted by the first movable part on the control element which results in a movement of a mobile on the screen in the desired direction.
- FIG. 1 schematically represents an electronic game console on which the controller according to the invention adapts
- Figure 2 shows the fixing element which allows the controller according to the invention to be fixed on the game console
- Figure 3 is a sectional view of the fixed part of the controller according to a first embodiment of the invention
- Figure 4 is a sectional view of the movable part of the controller according to the first embodiment of the invention
- Figure 5 is a schematic sectional view of the controller in operation in the first embodiment embodiment of the invention
- FIG. 6 is a sectional view of a lever according to a second embodiment of the invention
- Figure 7 is a sectional view of a controller according to a third embodiment of the invention
- Figure 8 is a sectional view of a controller according to a fourth embodiment of the invention
- Figure 9 is a sectional view of the movable part of the controller according to a fifth embodiment of the invention.
- an electronic game console 10 comprises a liquid crystal screen, on / off and game initialization buttons 14 and a control element 16 in the form of a cross, each branch of which closes a contact when it is subjected to pressure and is brought back to the rest position by a return spring.
- a mobile element for example a character
- pressing on the right branch causes the movable element to move to the right of the screen and so on.
- pressure exerted on two adjacent branches causes a displacement of 45 ".
- a fixing element 20 shown in FIG. 2 by gluing or other means
- This element is fixed around the cross 16 (Fig 1) and includes recesses 22 which allow the lever to be fixed as we will see.
- element 20 has a straight part 24 corresponding to the edge of the console so that the assembly, once placed on the console, does not overflow
- the fixing element 20 is not compulsory, and the handle could be fixed directly to the console by gluing.
- the lever comprises a first part illustrated in FIG. 3 in dome shape 30 comprising on the periphery of its base three lugs 32 of conical shape which are introduced into the widest part of the recesses 32 of the fastening element (see Fig 2), and which are blocked in the narrowed parts of the recesses when the part 30 is made to rotate clockwise.
- the dome-shaped part 30 has an opening 34 at the top intended to allow the handle of the lever to pass as will be seen.
- the second part of the handle according to the first embodiment is illustrated in FIG. 4. It comprises a hollow element of substantially spherical shape
- the movable element 40 which is placed inside the dome of the first fixed part 30.
- the movable element 40 has a lower face
- a handle 42 intended to pass through the opening 34 of the fixed part 30 is integral with the element 40 and has the same axis of symmetry.
- the fixed part 30 is fixed by means of its conical lugs 32 on the fixing element 20 itself fixed on the console and surrounding the cross-shaped control element 16.
- the movable part of the handle formed by the element 40 and the handle 42 passing through the opening 34 is shown in the leaning position.
- the right end of the lower face 41 of the element 40 exerts pressure on the branch 16-1 of the control cross 16, which causes the closure of a contact (not shown) and the displacement of the moving part on the screen to the right.
- the element 40 is supported on the inner surface of the fixed element 30.
- the element 40 is not exactly spherical and preferably comprises an almost planar upper surface (where the handle is fixed) 42 so as to form a sort of circular shoulder 44 intended to serve as a support on the interior wall of element 30 each time that the handle 42 is moved in any direction.
- An essential characteristic of the lever of the invention is that it suffices to apply a relatively weak force on the sleeve 42 to exert the pressure ensuring the contact of the cross, because it is at the end of the branch 16-1 that this pressure is exerted.
- a slight force on the handle makes it possible to apply sufficient torque to the whole of the movable part bearing on the inside of the fixed element 30 to exert the desired pressure causing contact. If too great a force is applied to the handle 42, too much pressure is then exerted on the cross 16 and risks causing deterioration.
- the system for fixing by pins 32 wedged in the recesses 22 makes it possible to avoid such a risk because too great a force applied to the handle 42, therefore too great a torque, causes the abrupt release or "unclipping" of the lever. by the sudden exit of the pins 32 from their recesses 22.
- the element 40 has a base diameter approximately equal to the width of the cross. This has the advantage that, when a pressure is exerted on two adjacent branches of the cross 16 to cause a displacement at 45 * of the movable element on the screen, it is easy for the player to feel the aid.
- the movable part 40 of the lever does not have a substantially spherical but rather frustoconical shape, same as the first hollow part 30.
- the movable element 40 bears on the inner wall of the hollow part 30 at the level of the shoulder 46 formed by the periphery of the planar circular part of the frustoconical element 40 .
- the upper part 48 of the movable member 40 is cylindrical and planar at the top and the fixed dome-shaped member 30 has a thread on which is screwed a threaded cover 50 having an opening through which the handle 42 passes.
- the movable element of the lever comprises an upper part in the form of an inverted hemisphere 52 , while the lower part 40 pressing on the cross of the console is of frustoconical shape in the same way as in the second embodiment of FIG. 6.
- the inverted hemisphere 52 is placed in the upper part of the fixed element 30 in the form of an inverted hollow hemisphere 54.
- the joystick also serves to control the "shot" on the mobile or the target moving on the screen.
- the command allowing this firing is a key 60 placed in the center of the cross 16.
- the movable element of the joystick is composed of two parts: a first part 40 similar to that previous embodiments, and an independent handle 62 retained in the high position by means of a spring 64 and by means of a lug 66.
- the two parts of the game control handle according to the invention can be made of any material, but it is preferable that they are made of rigid plastic material such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate ...
- controller of the invention has been described in combination with a stand-alone game console (having its own screen), it is obvious that it could also be adapted on a console connected to a separate monitor such as a television screen.
