Definitions
- This invention relates to hand held liquid applicators and a method of applying a liquid to plants and/or plant pests by direct application of the liquid by way of contact between a hand held liquid applicator and the plants and/or pests and it will therefore be described in this context.
- the invention is by no means limited to this particular use and the broader usages should be borne in mind.
- wick applicators employ direct contact as their transfer method, but are finicky to use as the wick must touch each weed individually, making it difficult to keep track of those treated and the exercise time consuming.
- a hand held liquid applicator suitable for the application of a liquid to a substrate by a user
- the hand held liquid applicator consisting of at least one roller, the roller having an exterior peripheral surface, a carrier suitable for restraining the roller such that it may be rolled in contact with the substrate by the user whilst the user is standing or walking with a predominantly upright posture upon the substrate, a supply line supplying the liquid to one or more liquid outlets located in close proximity to the exterior peripheral surface of the roller and suitably attached to or integrated with the carrier, the liquid passing along the liquid supply line from a liquid reservoir to the liquid outlet(s) and on to the roller for direct transfer from the roller to the substrate.
- the liquid reservoir can comprise any form of container with capacity for sufficient liquid to coat a given area provided it has at least a filling opening and a liquid reservoir outlet for the connection of the supply line.
- liquid flow is produced by the liquid reservoir being elevated above the height of the liquid outlets, a pressure head resulting, producing liquid flow only when;
- the pressure inside the liquid reservoir is not significantly below ambient.
- the liquid reservoir or a mass can be built into or comprise the upper portion of the carrier, arranged on the opposite end of the carrier to the roller, thus providing good balance and minimising the effort required to raise the roller when in use. This arrangement is particularly suitable for simple low cost embodiments, and this method of flow control can eliminate the need for further complexity.
- the liquid reservoir may be mounted apart from the carrier, connected to the carrier only by way of the supply line. This separate liquid reservoir would typically be of a larger capacity for carrying upon the user's back.
- the supply line Whilst not essential, in certain circumstances, it may be advantageous for the supply line to be connected to the liquid reservoir at a point which is above a normal liquid fill level when the liquid reservoir and the roller are in a common, generally horizontal plane, the liquid reservoir outlet only being supplied with the liquid when the roller and liquid reservoir are moved to horizontal planes with significant separation between them. If the liquid reservoir outlet is below the normal liquid fill level and the surface tension effect is negligible, siphonic flow would occur whenever the liquid outlets are below a liquid/air interface level in the liquid reservoir.
- flow assistance and flow control means such as either the pressurisation of the liquid reservoir, direct pumping of the liquid, for example a trigger actuated pump, and/or the incorporation of a flow restriction or control means may be employed to alter the flow characteristics to suit different application requirements.
- the roller can comprise a wide variety of shapes and configurations and the exterior peripheral surface may take various forms.
- the simple requirements for the roller are that the roller can;
- the hand held liquid applicator is charged with liquid, for example herbicide, and rolled over the plants to be treated at a rate which is convenient to the operator.
- liquid for example herbicide
- the device according to the present invention enables the rapid application of a broad range of liquids, such as weedicides, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and the like, to low growing plants, with minimum wastage and absence of the unintended application common with sprays, and thereby meets the objectives of the invention.
- Figure 1 is a side view of a hand held liquid applicator shown against the outline of a user shown in side view in a predominantly upright position
- Figure 2 shows a plan view of the hand held liquid applicator of Fig. 1 whilst horizontal
- Figure 3 shows an end view of a common tube type paint roller (10) for fitment to;
- Figure 4 a carrier (12) shown as a partial centerline section taken perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the roller (10) of Fig. 3.
- like reference numerals refer to like parts.
- the hand held liquid applicator comprises; a roller (10), in the form of a common tube type paint roller, sheathed with a durable absorbent material forming the exterior peripheral surface (11), a carrier (12) including a moulded plastic head section (13) into which a tubular extension section (14) fits.
- the carrier (12) supports a supply line (15), which is assembled from two short lengths, and one long length of a tubular plastic material, each having one end connected at a node on the head section (13) above the roller (10) and coplanar with the axis of the tubular extension section (14).
- the short lengths both have one end sealed and liquid outlets (16), which are not visible but interpenetrate the lowermost region of these short lengths of the supply line (15) shown in section in Fig. 4 where the supply line runs parallel and close to the roller (10).
- the roller is carried on, and free to rotate around protruding lugs (17) which are an integral part of the moulded plastic head section (13) and are moulded to fall within a circle slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the roller (10).
- the long length of plastic tubing passes, from the node on the head section (13) internally along the length of the extension section (14).
- the liquid reservoir (18) of moulded plastic material, with filling opening (19) is attached to the opposite end of the carrier (12) to the roller (10) and an outlet (20) connects to one end of the supply line (15) which exits the tubular extension section (14) of carrier (12) via hole (21).
- a shield (22) having a notch (23) Incorporated in the head section (13) is a shield (22) having a notch (23).
- the shield (22) generally shields the upper region of the exterior peripheral surface (11) from contact with plants, this is useful when applying weedicide to weeds growing under the foliage of larger plants which may otherwise be harmfully effected by unintended contact with the roller (10).
- the notch (23) is intended to allow application of weedicide selectively to the stem of larger weeds with a generally vertical rolling action, this type of application being otherwise hindered in the case of an embodiment having a shield (22) with no notch (23).
- the hand held liquid applicator would typically be primed with liquid when placed on a surface with both roller (10) and liquid reservoir (18) generally horizontal.
- a filler cap would be installed, generally covering but not sealing the filling opening (19)
- the user would then grasp the tubular extension section (14) near to the liquid reservoir (18) raise the liquid reservoir (18) or lower the liquid outlets (16) to achieve a necessary flow inducing head and proceed to roll anything that needs coating with the liquid from the liquid reservoir (18).
