Definitions

  • THIS I NVENTION relates to a rocker toy which can be made in the form of a horse, giraffe, lion, tiger, donkey, dinosaur or any other suitable animal having a plurality of legs.
  • rocker toys are usually provided with a pair of curved rocker supports which enables the rocker toy to be rocked backwards and forwards on each curved rocker support in a manner similar to a conventional rocking chair. While such toys have been generally satisfactory in use it is clearly apparent that rocker toys would have considerably more commercial appeal if they could adopt a walking motion . Reference also may be made to rocker toys such as those described in Russian Specification SU 1 743632 which refers to a rocking toy having an S shaped resilient support. European Specification EP 545831 refers to a toy walking horse having adjustable cams at both ends to give a variable rocking angle.
  • a walking action in respect of the walking horse of Specification 42876/85 is initiated when a rider sits astride the body and leans rearwardly as well as initiating a lifting force on the head in addition to a forward pushing force on footrests located on each front leg
  • This sequence of actions causes the front legs and rear legs to pivot about their respective horizontal axes
  • the provision of the transverse linkage rods and longitudinal linkage rods then causes the body to move in a walking motion by forward movement of the front legs and rearward movement of the rear legs Subsequently, the rider leans forward ly and this action causes a forward movement of the rear legs Thereafter by rocking forwardly and rearwardly the toy may be caused to adopt a walking motion
  • the rocker toy of the invention includes a body, a pair of opposed upright supports pivotally attached to the body adjacent one end thereof, a transverse member interconnecting each of said opposed upright supports, a further upright support pivotally attached to the body adjacent another end of the body, linkage means interconnecting said further upright support and said transverse member wherein said linkage means is -
  • each of said pair of upright supports and said further upright support is provided with an elongate rocker member which extends substantially the length of said bodv
  • the body of the rocker toy may be of any suitable shape and thus av resemble a horse, donkey, rooster or any other type of farm yard animal as well as other four legged animals such as elephants, tigers, lions and the like and thus may be provided with a head part, neck and body part However, this is not essential and the body could resemble a crocodile or lizard for example.
  • the rocker toy may be provided with a plurality of exchangeable heads each of which may be fitted to the head part of the body
  • the body is also preferably hollow having a continuous side wall and a top wall More suitably the continuous side may be rectangular in plan having opposed ends and opposed sides although this is not essential and the continuous side wall may be round in plan view or polygonal if desired It is preferred however that whatever its shape the body has an open bottom
  • the pair of opposed end uprights as well as the further end upright are each provided with rocker members which may have a curved or convexly shaped undersurface
  • rocker member of the further end upright may also be accommodated between each of the rocker members of the pair of end uprights when the rocker toy of the invention adopts a forward walking motion or a reverse walking motion as will be apparent from the preferred embodiment hereinafter
  • a forward walking motion may be initiated by a rider rocking rearwardly and then forwardly and a reverse walking motion may be initiated by the rider rocking forwardly and then rearwardly
  • One of the advantages of the rocker toy of the invention over the prior art is not only the capability of being able to adopt a forward walking motion as well as a reverse walking motion but also that the rocker toy can take long rolling strides at a very quick speed which was certainly not the case with the prior art.
  • Each o f the upright supports are suitably in the form of rear legs which may be attached to a rear end of an associated rocker member.
  • the term " rear" has reference to the direction of travel in a forward direction .
  • the rear rocker members may also have a foot rest located at a respective forward end as shown in the preferred embodiment.
  • the further upright support is suitably attached to its rocker member at a position intermediate its length and preferably midway of its length .
  • the further upright support is preferably provided in the form of a front leg assembly which may include a pair of downwardly extending support members which are located on either side of the body which are each attached to their associated rocker member.
  • the linkage means may be of any suitable type and thus may include . an elongate strap or rod interconnecting the front leg assembly and the transverse member.
