Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for sub- scriber identification in a fixed network so as to direct a subscriber's telephone services to the tele ⁇ phone currently used by him.
- incoming calls are directed directly to an extension of the network con- cerned.
- the incoming calls can also be directed from one extension to another extension of the network by what is known as call transfer.
- call transfer the sub ⁇ scriber determines the extension to which the calls are to be directed.
- the present fixed network solutions do not provide a possibility of transferring a call to wherever the subscriber happens to be, or of making an outgoing call at the subscriber's expense therefrom, but all transfers must be effected beforehand from the subscriber's own subscriber interface.
- the services that a fixed network offers to a subscriber have thus been very modest as regards the subscriber's need to move. Services based on new smart card solutions are being planned and they may well offer the subscribers more freedom to move than the earlier systems, but the present invention however relates to utilization of existing networks and mobile exchanges.
- the object of the present invention is to pro ⁇ vide a method by which the above-mentioned restrictions are overcome and by which fixed networks can also be utilized in a flexible way and irrespective of location.
- the method of the invention is characterized by comprising the steps of - reading the subscriber's identification data needed for registration from the subscriber's personal processor card or the like in a terminal equipment;
- the field of application of the invention covers communication between any two telephone systems when the subscriber of a certain sys ⁇ tem wants to direct services that he has in his own system to a terminal equipment or telephone that he uses in another system.
- the mobile subscribers of a mobile phone network are capable of communicating freely between (a radio network of) a (digital) mobile phone system and a fixed network.
- the invention is based on the idea that location management of a mobile phone system is utilized and expanded so that it also covers terminal equipments of transmission systems of a fixed network.
- location management of one telephone system such as a GSM mobile phone system
- PSTN/ISDN a fixed network
- the services of a fixed net- work can be expanded so that the number of subscribers reached is larger than the number of subscriber lines available. Services can thus be provided for a large number of subscribers by fewer subscriber lines without impairing the level of service. Further, this can be effected without producing new significant signalling characteristics. From the subscriber's point of view, the result is a single telephone system which is in use throughout the mobile phone network and by which the subscriber can direct the incoming calls to any exten- sion of a fixed network that is provided with a reader reading his ID card (smart card).
- the subscriber reports to a terminal equipment of a fixed network (PSTN/ISDN) e.g. by means of a subscriber identity module (SIM) of GSM, after which calls can be directed to him.
- SIM subscriber identity module
- the sub ⁇ scriber needs only a SIM of GSM and access to a tele ⁇ phone of a fixed network that is capable of reading the SIM.
- the service as described in the invention can be offered either as an automatic registration service, with which e.g. a so-called calling card - of the type of a prepaid card or credit card - can be combined to make also outgoing calls possible; or as a so-called prefix service, in which the user selects a prefix, after which the network is ready to receive the informa ⁇ tion contained in the ID card.
- an automatic registration service with which e.g. a so-called calling card - of the type of a prepaid card or credit card - can be combined to make also outgoing calls possible
- prefix service in which the user selects a prefix, after which the network is ready to receive the informa ⁇ tion contained in the ID card.
- FIG. 1 illustrates the principle of location updating (roaming) based on a SIM of GSM
- Fig. 2 illustrates a system of the invention, based on an ID card, for directing telephone services to the telephone of a fixed network that is currently used by the subscriber.
- Fig. 1 it is possible to establish a connection by any telephone A or B of the GSM system using a single SIM C, even though the tele ⁇ phones belong to different networks (PLMN A and PLMN B) and the radio connections RA and RB between the tele- phone and the corresponding network are not compatible.
- PLMN A and PLMN B the radio connections RA and RB between the tele- phone and the corresponding network are not compatible.
- This is one option of the GSM system, and it enables the use of a mobile phone within the coverage area of the system without it being necessary for the subscriber to carry his own telephone with him, and so this is an internal characteristic known from mobile phone net ⁇ works.
- the purpose of Fig. 1 is, in fact, to show the general technical features of digital mobile phone net ⁇ works that are useful in location-independent operation.
- the information on the subscriber's ID card can be transferred on a audiofrequency channel or by means of a digital trans ⁇ mission path to a local exchange, from which the infor ⁇ mation is forwarded to other networks or mobile exchanges.
- data is transmitted e.g. in the manner described below.
- a mobile subscriber registers with a terminal equipment of a fixed network by means of his ID card C, the equipment being provided with a card reader.
- the ID card contains the subscriber's identity data and PIN, by which he can be reached.
- the terminal equipment of the fixed network reads the data on the subscriber from the card and transmits them to the exchange of the fixed network.
- the exchange of the fixed network is capable of routing the registration to the subscriber database by means of a (short) prefix or service number possibly selected by the subscriber, the subscriber's location data being stored in said database.
- the subscriber data ⁇ base may be located in another telecommunication net- work, e.g. in a mobile network.
- the exchange of a fixed network also transmits the address of the extension of the fixed network to the subscriber database. After registration, the calls addressed to the subscriber can be directed to the extension from which the subscriber registered. In the following are presented two alternative ways, with reference to Fig. 2, for the subscriber to register from a local exchange via the GSM network.
- a subscriber provided with a SIM C of GSM uses a telephone P provided with a card reader (not shown) to select a service number or prefix that communicates to the local exchange (LE) that a registration is in progress.
- the local exchange LE allocates audiofrequency receivers to receive the registration information (IMSI).
- IMSI registration information
- the terminal equipment belongs to a digital network, e.g. ISDN the information is transmitted in digital form from the terminal equipment P on a D or B channel.
- the local exchange LE stores the registration information in memory or in audiofrequency receivers M on a temporary basis, and establishes a signalling connection with the subscriber's HLR, i.e. home location register of GSM.
- the connection can be established e.g. by using a MAP protocol between the local exchange LE and the home location register HLR, the protocol being used in communication between different registers and MSCs of GSM.
- a connection is advantageously established via a home location register of a specified network, e.g. a local network, from which the subscriber's own home location register is contacted quite normally via visitor location registers VLR of GSM.
- IMSI stored information
- Alternative b connections in dotted lines:
- the local exchange routes a connection to a gateway mobile services switching centre GMSC, to which registration information is trans ⁇ mitted directly from the terminal equipment either in audiofrequency or digital form.
- a GMSC provides service for e.g. those calls made by a mobile phone that are to be routed as directly as possible from a subscriber calling from a fixed network to a specified mobile phone.
- the GMSC establishes a signalling connection with a home location register HLR of GSM.
- registration information can be forwarded by user parts (TUP and ISUP protocols) of so-called common channel signalling intended for the internal use of digital systems.
