Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method of tending golf greens by spreading onto the greens a solution which selectively promotes grass growth and by cutting the grass shorter in order to ob ⁇ tain an even base for the game.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide a method of tending golf greens in a simple manner, and it is a specific object to control the annual bluegrass selectively so that the rest of the grass will not suffer.
  • a solution containing one or more gibberellins, or a salt thereof is spread onto golf greens. It was observed, surprisingly, that in comparison with the other grasses in golf greens, the annual bluegrass is the most sensi ⁇ tive to the action of gibberellins, not only with respect to height increment but, more important, the mode of the annual bluegrass shifted from procumbent to more vertical under the effect of gibberellins. Owing to this unexpected effect, the panicles of the annual bluegrass can be cut off selectively at an early stage of growth, and thus the panicles will not have time to ripen, and thus the spreading of the annual bluegrass can be inhibited effectively and simply.
  • a solution which contains gibberellins or a salt of gib ⁇ berellic acid in an amount of 0.0025-10, for example 0.01-5, % by weight is spread onto golf greens. It was shown that at these concentrations the action of gibberellins on the other grasses of greens was slight, whereas its action on the mode of growth of the annual bluegrass was significant, and thus selec ⁇ tive.
  • the solution used in the method according to the invention can be formulated as a fertilizer solution by incorporating into it not only gibberellins but also plant nutrients, preferably 0.5- 20, for example 1-7, % by weight, and a surfactant, preferably at maximum 1, for example 0.01-0.06, % by weight, the balance being water.
  • a solution may be spread which contains a liquid derived from fermentation per ⁇ formed with the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi.
  • This liquid whic is also called FL extract, may be prepared by fermentation in, for example, moistened and sterilized grain hulls, when the medium has, after sterilization, been inoculated with Gibberel ⁇ la fujikuroi fungus grown on a complete medium (e.g. DSM 893). Sugars, starch or vegetable oil, either together or separately, may be added as a source of carbon for the fermentation.
  • the liquid is isolated from the medium and is filtered free from microbes in a microfilter.
  • Gibberella fuji ⁇ kuroi fungus produces gibberellins GA lf GA 3 , GA 4 / 7 , GA 9 , etc.
  • GA3 stands for gibberellic acid.
  • gibberellic acid The generally known properties include the stimulation of the stem growth and germination of onocotyledo- nous plants (Richard, P.P. et al., Gibberellins Chemistry, Physiology and Use, Monograph 5, 1990, pp. 127-143).
  • the use of GA3 for increasing the cold resistance of grasses is also known (Farm. Chemicals Handbook, pp. c. 146, 1990).
  • the acid has been used as an accelerator of the barley malting process (Home, S. and Linko, M. , Proceedings, European Brewery Convention, 16th Congress, 91-103, 1977).
  • plant nutrients by which is meant nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
  • the compound which contains plant nutrients may be any fertilizer raw material known in the art. Any N-P-K liquid fertilizer is possible.
  • the plant nutrient is based on the cations NH 4 , K , Ca ,
  • the fertilizer solution may contain plant nutrient in an amount of 0.5-20 % by weight, preferably 1-7 % by weight. Fertilizer solutions which contain large amounts of plant nutrients may require sprinkler irrigation of the grass.
  • Non-phytotoxic surfactants may be added to such a fertilizer composition.
  • One usable surfactant is C5-Cl0-alkyl- phenol polyglycol ether (Citowett).
  • the surfactant amount may vary within 0-1 % of the total amount of the fertilizer solu ⁇ tion, preferably 0.01-0.06 % by weight.
  • the fertilizer solution is to be used on the green at intervals of 1-2 weeks throughout the growth season.
  • the fertilizer solu ⁇ tion may be spread over the area of the green at a rate of 0.01-0.1 liter per square meter.
  • the spreading may be by spraying or by sprinkler irrigation. The most preferred mode of spreading is spraying.
  • the fertilizer solution is to be spread regularly at a rate of 0.01-0.1 liter per square meter, preferably 0.04-0.06 liter per square meter.
  • the fertilizer solution is especially suitable for use on golf courses the greens of which have high quality requirements.
  • Potential targets of use also include football fields and other sports fields in which the aim is to keep the grass short and even.
  • N- P-K fertilizer 26-4-14 means that the product contains nitrogen 26 %, phosphorus calculated as P 4 %, and potassium calculated as K 14 %, and P-K fertilizer 0.5-8-34 means that the product contains nitrogen 0.5 %, phosphorus calculated as P 8 %, and potassium calculated as K 34 %.
  • the treatment was in accordance with Example 4, except that the concentration of the FL extract was 200 mg/1 Ga 3 + GA4/7.
  • the treated greens were without panicles, the annual bluegrass was lighter in color and more sparse.
  • the greens treated by the method according to the invention were devoid of annual bluegrass panicles, and the greens had a beautiful color.
