Abstract

In a door frame (1) consisting of a core (2) of rigid non-metallic material and a metal covering (3), e.g. of extruded aluminium, the new feature is that the core (2) consists of medium-hard compacted wood-fibre material, e.g. of the quality 'MDF' ('Medium Density Fibreboard'). In this manner, an improved fire protection is achieved compared to what is achieved with a door frame, in which the core consists of e.g. pinewood, at the same time as the tendency of the frame to warp has practically disappeared.

Description

DOOR FRAME OR PREFORM FOR SAME, ESPECIALLY FOR USE WITH LIGHT WALLS.
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a door frame or a preform for manufacturing a door frame, such as set forth in detail in the preamble of claim 1.
BACKGROUND ART
Door frames of this kind have been proposed, in which the core consists of wood, c.f. e.g. GB Patent Publication No. 943.962, based upon an invention from 1959. Experience has, however, shown that door frames or preforms of this kind partly lack the fire-protecting capability to be desired (and in many cases required), partly have a tendency to warp due to the inherent inhomogeneity of the natural wood material.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
It is the object of the present invention to provide a door frame or a preform of the kind referred to initially, that does not suffer from the disadvantages referred to above, and this object is achieved with a door frame or a preform for manufacturing such a frame, according to the present invention additionally exhibiting the feature set forth in the characterizing clause of claim 1.
It has surprisingly been shown that the combination of a metal covering with a relatively high thermal conductivity with a solid core of compacted wood-fibre material having a not insignificant capability of storing heat provides the door frame or the preform with a fire-protecting capabil¬ ity, which up to now has not been attainable with simple means, at the same time as the tendency of the door frame or the preform to warp has practically disappeared. The improvement in the fire-protecting capability is presumably due, partly to the relatively high heat-storage capacity of the hard fibre material in combination with its relatively low heat-conducting capability, partly that the metal cove¬ ring distributes the heat from any flame hitting the covering in such a manner, that the fire does not immediately take hold of the core, such as would undoubtedly be the case with frames having no more than a plastic or veneer covering.
Advantageous embodiments of the door frame or preform accor¬ ding to the invention, the effects of which will be evident from the following detailed portion of the present descrip- tion, are set forth in claims 2 and 3.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
In the following detailed portion of the present description, the invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the drawing, showing a horizontal section through one of the two vertical parts of a door frame, together with a part of the door cooperating with the frame.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The door frame 1 shown in the drawing consists of two main components, viz. a core 2, in the present example being manufactured from a semi-hard wood-fibre material of the kind being marketed under the designation MDF (Medium
Density Fibreboard), and a covering 3 of metal, in the example shown extruded aluminium in an alloy suited for the purpose.
The door frame 1 surrounds a door opening 4 that may be closed in the conventional manner by a door 5, of which only the edge portion opposite the hinge edge is shown, the edge shown cooperating with a weather strip 6 of e.g. PVC secured in an undercut groove in the covering 3.
The construction of the door 5 will not be described in detail in the present description, since the invention does not relate to the door, but it will be obvious that the door 5 must have a quality of fire safety at least corres- ponding to what is achieved with the door frame 1 assembled according to the present invention.
The semi-hard fibre material ("MDF" material), of which the core 2 is manufactured, is usually produced and marketed in the form of boards of various thicknesses. It is, of course, possible to manufacture the core 2 from a piece of such material with a thickness corresponding to the full thickness of the frame (as measured parallel to the door 5), in which the rabbet intended to cooperate with the door 5 is then formed in a milling operation, but since this entails a great waste of material, it is preferred according to the invention to manufacture the core 2 from two core parts 7 and 8, possibly joined, e.g. by means of glue, at a joint face 9.
Due to the properties of the materials used, it is necessary to manufacture the core 2 and the covering 3 separately and then place the core within the covering. This may, of course, be done by pushing the core into the covering from one end, but it is preferred to use a covering like the one shown with an open side facing away from the door opening (4), through which open side the core 2 may be pushed in the transverse direction. For this purpose, the flanks 10 and 11 of the covering 3 are bent outwardly within their elastic limits, so that especially the core part 7 may pass inwardly past the edge strips 12 and 13 of the flanks respectively, said edge strips at the end of the movement slipping into edge rabbets 14 and 15 respectively on the core part 7. In order to ease the insertion operation and avoid damage to especially the core part 7, the edge strips 12 and 13 may be rounded or bevelled as indicated at 16 and 17 respective¬ ly.
On the side facing away from the door opening 4, the core part 7 comprises a pair of grooves 18 and 19, in which steel profile members 20 and 21, indicated in broken line, of the adjacent wall may be inserted.
Trials have shown that a door frame constructed according to the principle of the present invention has a considerably better fire-protecting capability than e.g. a similar door frame, in which the core consists of pinewood. The reason for this is probably that the fibre material used according to the invention has a rather high heat-storage capacity - its weight is thus considerably greater than that of pine- wood - and heat e.g. penetrating towards the flank 11 will to a great extent be absorbed by the adjacent part of the core part 7, while only a lesser proportion "flows" through the part of the covering 3 facing the door opening 4. Com¬ pared to e.g. pinewood, the fibre material used according to the invention also possesses the advantage that its ten¬ dency to warp is practically zero.

Claims

CLAIMS .
1. Door frame or preform for manufacturing a door frame and of the kind comprising a) a previously manufactured core (2) of rigid non-metallic material, and b) a previously manufactured covering (3) of rigid me¬ tallic material surrounding the core (2) at least on the side facing towards or intended to face towards the door opening (4) within the finished door frame and on the sides intended to extend away from the door opening towards the surfaces of the surrounding wall, characterized in c) that the core (2) consists of compacted wood-fibre material with a hardness of the same order of mag¬ nitude as that of beechwood.
2. Door frame or preform according to claim 1, charac- terized in that the core (2) consists of fibreboard of the kind designated "MDF" ("Medium Density Fibreboard" ).
3. Door frame or preform according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the core (2) consists of at least two core parts (7,8) joined along a surface (9) extending in the longitudinal direction of the frame side or preform.
