Abstract

A tamper resistant document (2) such as a stock (102) or marriage (202) certificate, having at least two indicia of information printed in a defined repetitive off-set pattern (18) across a substantial portion (16) of the instrument. Repeated indicia for a tamper resistant stock certificate include the number of shares, the C.U.S.I.P. number (12) and the shareholder's name (120). Repeated indicia for a tamper resistant marriage certificate (202) include the names of the individuals (124, 126), the marriage date (128) and the certificate registration number (130). In addition, this and/or other information is overlaid on the pattern in larger print. The document may have information encoded in bar codes (12b) of the type used with computerized optical scanning. The tamper resistant document is produced by laser printing on a generic engraved document (2).

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 5 October 1994 (05.10.94); original claims 1, 2, 6, 12, 13, 15 and 18 amended; new claims 23-33 added; remaining claims unchanged (6 pages)]
1. A tamper evident document including at least three indicia of information in any order in at least a single area of the document, in which
• the indicia are printed using an electronic printer in a single printing step,
• the indicia are printed on a background that is not specific to each of the indicia, and
• the indicia are interspersed repeatedly among each other, forming a pattern, to enable identification of the document and to reduce the ability to tamper with the indicia without the tampering becoming apparent.
2. The document of claim 1, further including printing of a larger size than the at least three indicia, the larger size printing including at least a portion of the same information contained in the at least three indicia, wherein the larger size printing appears to be overlaid on the pattern.
3. The document of claim 2, wherein the repeated printing of each of the at least three indicia is off-set rather than aligned in register.
4. The document of claim 3, wherein the document is of controlled paper.
5. The document of claim 2, wherein at least one of the at least three indicia is unique to the document.
6. The document of claim 1 further including a unique identifying number.
7. The document of claim 6, further including at least one signature.
8. The document of claim 1, wherein the printing is accomplished by laser printing.
9. The document of claim 8, wherein the repeated printing of each of the at least three indicia is off-set rather than aligned in register.
10. The document of claim 9, wherein the document is of controlled paper.
11. The document of claim 3 or claim 9, wherein the document is one of the group consisting of a stock certificate, a bond, a marriage certificate and a birth certificate.
12. A method of producing a tamper evident document with an electronic printer in a single printing step, using at least 1 4
three indicia of information, and with the flexibility of choosing any indicia in any order, including the steps of:
• choosing the at least three indicia;
• interspersing repeatedly the indicia among each other to form a pattern in at least a single area of the document to enable identification of the document and to reduce the ability to alter or obliterate the indicia; and
• printing the indicia in the pattern.
13. The method of claim 12, further including the step of printing information of a larger size than the at least three indicia as an apparent overlay on the pattern, wherein the larger size printing so printed includes at least a portion of the same information contained in the at least three indicia.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of printing a pattern further includes printing each of the at least three indicia in an off-set pattern rather than aligned in register.
15. The method of claim 14, wherein the step of printing the pattern and the step of printing larger size information are on controlled paper.
16. The method of claim 13, wherein at least one of the at least three indicia printed is unique to the document. 1 5
17. The method of claim 16, further including the step of printing information encoded in bar codes suitable for computerized optical scanning.
18. The method of claim 17, further including the step of printing at least one signature.
19. The method of claim 12, wherein the step of printing is laser printing.
20. The method of claim 19, wherein the step of printing a pattern further includes printing each of the at least three indicia in an off-set pattern rather than aligned in register.
21. The method of claim 20, wherein the step of printing a pattern and the step of printing larger size information are on controlled paper.
22. The method of claim 14 or 20, wherein the document so printed is one of the group consisting of a stock certificate, a bond, a marriage certificate and a birth certificate.
23. A system for printing a tamper evident document in a single printing step using an electronic printer and which prints at least any three indicia of information where the indicia I 6
• appear in any order,
• appear in at least a single area on the same background of the document,
• are interspersed repeatedly among each other to form a pattern, to enable identification of the document and to reduce the ability to alter or obliterate the indicia, where the printer is controlled by an information generating system which electronically generates the indicia on the document.
24. The system of claim 23, further including the step of printing information of a larger size than the at least three indicia to appear as an overlay on the pattern, wherein the larger size printing so printed includes at least a portion of the same information contained in the at least three indicia.
25. The system of claim 24, wherein the step of printing the pattern further includes printing each of the at least three indicia in an off-set pattern rather than aligned in register.
26. The system of claim 25, wherein the step of printing the pattern and the step of printing larger size information are on controlled paper.
27. The system of claim 24, wherein at least one of the at least three indicia printed is unique to the document.
28. The system of claim 27, further including the step of printing information encoded in bar codes suitable for computerized optical scanning.
29. The system of claim 28, further including the step of printing at least one signature.
30. The system of claim 23, wherein the step of printing a pattern is laser printing.
31. The system of claim 30, wherein the step of printing a pattern further includes printing each of the at least three indicia in an off-set pattern rather than aligned in register.
32. The system of claim 31, wherein the step of printing a pattern and the step of printing larger size information are on controlled paper.
33. The system of claim 25 or 31, wherein the document so printed is one of the group consisting of a stock certificate, a bond, a marriage certificate and a birth certificate.
