Abstract

A method for individualizing security documents provides that high security quality, application-neutral printed image 1 identical for a group of security documents is overprinted with second printed image 2 individualizing the security document, whereby the printing ink of second printed image 2 is repelled by the printing ink of first printed image 1. The printing ink of the second printed image is therefore deposited only in the areas of the first printed image where no printing ink of the first printed image is present. Preferably, the first printed image is produced by intaglio printing and the second printed image by means of liquid printing ink, in particular by the ink jet method.

Description

The invention relates to a method for individualizing security documents as well as to a corresponding security document and a group of individualized security documents, wherein a first print image, which may be identical for a group of documents, with a second print image, which for subgroups of this group or for any document thereof Group may be different, at least partially overprinted.

From the DE 29 33 436 C2 For example, a multi-layered ID card is known, which contains an application-neutral, high-quality security printed image, for example a steel gravure printed guilloche pattern on a paper substrate to which user-related data, such as a photograph or other individualizing data, are directly copied by means of an electrophotographic process to this Data insoluble and unalterable to connect to the paper substrate. This substrate is then laminated with transparent cover sheets to form the badge. However, the procedure may also be used in connection with other documents, securities, shares, etc. that need to be backed up.

The only forgery possibility is an unauthorized personalization of printed with the application-neutral printed image original blanks, but this can be prevented by a correspondingly safe storage of these blanks. Even a total falsification of security-quality high-quality printed paper blanks is not possible. The method described above is therefore always useful if, on the one hand, the security against forgery and tampering security of document and data must be secured, but on the other hand, the application of individual data should be done with relatively simple means.

The same interest in (anti-counterfeiting) security and ease of customization is also the application of individual data on passport pages and labels for sticking to passport pages, so-called visa stickers, and in connection with accompanying documents, customs documents, certificates of authenticity in the form of stickers or Tags or labels, coupons, tickets, checks, shares and certificates.

Data pages of passports and visa stickers are often provided with non-variable imprints produced by intaglio printing. For example, the headers and names of a country are indicated in the header of these documents, but they are not overprinted, since otherwise they could be at least partially obscured by the overprint. Individual and / or user-related data are therefore printed at other locations, for example by means of a laser printer, type wheel or inkjet printer.

It is an object of the present invention to combine a high-quality printed image, which is common to a group of documents, with an easily produced, individualizing imprint in a particularly suitable forgery-proof manner.

This object is achieved by an individualization method and by a corresponding security document having the features of the independent claims. In dependent claims advantageous embodiments and developments of the invention are given.

Accordingly, in a conventionally intaglio printed image which is identical to a group of security documents and may be, for example, a guilloche pattern, an individualizing print image is printed by means of a printing ink which is flowable at least at the moment of the printing operation. As a result, the printing ink rolls off the intaglio ink and deposits in places where there is no intaglio ink. The printed image produced in the intaglio printing process thus remains completely visible and forms fine lines within the individualizing printed image produced with printing ink. The fine lines do not significantly affect the information content of the individualizing print image, even if the individualizing print image is a reproduction of a photographic portrait, for example of the document holder - referred to below as a photographic image. The individualizing print image is only interrupted, as viewed under the magnifying glass, by the structures produced in intaglio printing, with the details becoming apparent only when viewed through a magnifying glass. Such superimposed structures can hardly be falsified.

As a particularly suitable method for generating the individualizing printed image, an inkjet printing process, also called inkjet process, has proven with commercially available black or color cartridges. This process is inexpensive and uses printing inks that are repelled by the usual steel gravure inks. Another suitable method is a digital printing process developed by Indigo BV / Netherlands (also referred to herein as an indigo printing process). In this method, electrically charged color particles dispersed in a liquid are applied to a substrate by means of electric fields. The Indigo process delivers print quality as good as offset printing however, a continuous change of print motifs too. Since the print motifs can also be individual data reproducing characters, this digital printing method is particularly suitable for the individualization of documents.

In principle, however, the method according to the invention can be applied to all security documents which have an application-neutral, consisting of contrasting light and dark areas existing print image (especially a gravure image), wherein either the light or the dark areas of the printed image on the ink of an above printed, individualizing Print image have a repulsive effect, so that the ink of the individualizing printed image essentially deposited only in the corresponding other areas. It is obvious that in the technical printing implementation of this inventive principle, for example, in small pores or fine grooves of the ink application of the first printed image slight residues of the ink of the individualizing imprint can remain, but without affecting the visual overall impression appreciable.

The areas in which the printing ink is deposited are preferably unprinted substrate areas, since unprinted substrate areas, in particular in the case of a paper substrate, for example a normal security paper, are particularly suitable for receiving printing ink.

However, it is also possible for the substrate to be a material which repels the printing ink of the individualizing printed image, for example printing ink on a plastic substrate, but the same printing ink is applied to the regions of the printed material application-neutral printed image very well liable. In an application-neutral print image printed on a light substrate with dark ink, this results in the application-neutral print image acting as a negative in its overprinted part.

The individualizing print image may include one or more individualizing information, such as a serial number (serial number), a photograph and / or personal data of the document holder in plain text and / or the same or other data in the form of a machine readable barcode.

Fig. 1a 1 schematically shows a document comprising a substrate 3 with a first print 1. This print 1 is a high-quality print image which is identical for a large number of security documents, for example identically for the pages of a passport document of a particular nation or, for example, all visa stickers used for a particular nation.

In the embodiment according to Fig. 1a this is a uniform basic pattern produced in the intaglio printing process, in the case of industrially applied processes, typically in the steel-piercing process. But it can just as well be an informative printed image, such as the portrait of a known personality, as it is known from banknotes.

The intaglio printing process is often used for the production of high-quality printed products for counterfeiting, since the printing plate production is very complex and expensive and can be produced with this method a very characteristic print image with tactile shares that can not be imitated by other printing processes. In the printing plate depressions are engraved as engraving areas, typically in the form of lines. For the printing process, the engraving areas of the printing plate are filled with paint. The excess paint is removed from the printing plate with the help of a wiper cylinder or a squeegee so that only the engraving lines remain filled with ink. By this wiping so all color components are removed on the printing plate surface. By means of a counter-pressure cylinder with elastic surface is then to printing substrate, usually paper, pressed with high pressure on the printing plate. The document is in this case pressed into the filled with pasty color engraving areas of the printing plate and comes so in contact with the ink. When removing the disk, this pulls the ink out of the recesses of the engraving lines. The printed image thus obtained has printing areas that vary depending on the depth of the engraving in the ink layer thickness. If lithographic printing inks are used in intaglio printing, a light color tone is obtained when printing a light-colored, in particular a white, medium-density medium, and stronger, darker shades when printing with thick layer thicknesses. Compared to other common printing processes, the gravure printing process can produce print images with relatively large and different ink layer thicknesses. From a safety point of view, this offers the advantage that the printed images thus generated can be felt manually when using correspondingly deep engravings. By using particularly fine engravings, extremely fine, extremely sharp printing lines can be realized.

In 1b shows is a section of the document 1a shown in cross section. The substrate is a typical security paper, possibly also with watermarks. It can be seen that the printed image 1 is composed of unprinted areas 1a and areas 1b printed with intaglio printing ink. In order for the printed image 1 to develop its optical effect, the color of the printed areas 1 b contrasts with the color of the unprinted areas 1 a, which is typically white in the case of a non-colored substrate 3. In 1b shows is also the typical tactile structure of a printed by intaglio printing paper substrate to recognize on which one side of the withdrawn from the engraving areas ink is. By impressing the substrate by means of the elastic Pressure cylinder in the engraving areas of the printing plate, the printed areas 1b on the corresponding opposite side of the substrate a little pressed.

That in terms of Fig. 1a, 1b described security document with identical for a group of documents first print image 1 is then individualized by a second print image is printed in the inkjet printing process on the first print image, as in Fig. 2a in supervision and in Fig. 2b is shown in cross section. The individualizing imprint is "INKJET" in the exemplary embodiment. It can be printed with black or colored printing ink. Instead of the imprint "INKJET", the individualizing imprint 2 could, for example, also be personal personal data or a multicolored or black-and-white photograph.

Fig. 2b shows the layer structure of the document Fig. 2a the first and second areas 1a, 1b of the first print image 1 are first completely overprinted using a Canon BJC7100 ink jet printer with a commercial black ink cartridge. Due to the repulsive effect of the intaglio printing ink on the printing ink of the individualizing printed image 2, the printing ink flows laterally from the intaglio printing ink and deposits in the unprinted interspaces 1a. This process is in Fig. 2b indicated by double arrows. It then results in a material distribution as in Fig. 3b shown, after which the printing ink of the individualizing print image 2 only the areas 1a of the substrate 3 colors, which had remained unprinted in printing the first printed image 1 in the intaglio printing.

Fig. 3a zeigt in Vergrößerung diesen Effekt anhand des Buchstaben "K" des individualisierenden Druckbilds 2 in Aufsicht. Fig. 3a shows in magnification this effect on the basis of the letter "K" of the individualizing print image 2 in supervision. The printed image 1 applied in the intaglio printing process here forms a regular background pattern, for example in red on a white background. In the area of the letter "K" of the individualizing print image 2, the unprinted intermediate areas of the background pattern 1 are filled with black printing ink and the contrasting lighter red color of the background pattern remains visible in the individualizing print image visually and without any aids. Such a combination of two superimposed print images, one of which is tactile, ensures high protection against counterfeiting, since it is not reproducible with simple conventional printing techniques or color copiers. It can also be checked by non-specialists without complex aids and unauthorized subsequent changes and manipulations on the individual print image 2, for example by etching or covering, are easily recognizable by the almost inevitable change in the printed image 1.
