Definitions

  • the present invention relates to means for presentation of medicaments, in particular to a form of packaging and dispensing liquid medicaments such as decongestant inhalation products.
  • Decongestant inhalation products are often liquids.
  • the present invention provides a closed container holding a single dose of a liquid medicament, the container comprising liquid-retaining means and a hollow neck extending from the liquid-retaining means, a weakened portion being provided in the neck of the container substantially perpendicular to and crossing the neck, whereby application of finger pressure can bend the neck about the weakened portion to break open the neck and release the liquid medicament.
  • the pack In providing for the administration of a single dose of liquid medicament the pack allows a desired amount of medicament to be dispensed through the neck onto a precise area.
  • the closed container may be pre-for ed as a container, including a neck, into which medicament is inserted prior to sealing.
  • the container is formed from two parts, a first part comprising a moulded base including a recess comprising a depression and an indentation, and a second part forming a backing material which may also comprise a moulded material or it may comprise a substantially flat backing surface.
  • the liquid-retaining means is defined by the depression of the first part and a portion of the second part and the neck is defined by the indentation of the first part and a further portion of the second part.
  • the second part is laid over the first part and both parts are sealed around their periphery after the liquid medicament has been introduced into the first part.
  • the second part may be overlaid the first part and sealed thereto.
  • the parts may be sealed by known sealing technology such as adhesive and/or heat sealing means.
  • the container is formed from plastics material. More preferably the moulded base and/or the backing material is made from a laminate comprising an inner layer (contacting the liquid medicament) of material impermeable to the liquid medicament and an outer layer of material to provide structural stability.
  • the outer layer can be either impermeable or permeable to the liquid medicament. It may be of value to use an outer layer of a less expensive permeable material such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in combination with a impermeable inner layer of a material such as polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) . In such a preferred form, the outer layer may be thicker than the inner layer.
  • the liquid-retaining means may be any receptacle which can contain the liquid medicament. It may comprise a bulbous chamber depending from a substantially flat sheet, the chamber being fluidly connected to the neck. Where the pack is formed from two parts as described hereinabove, preferably the liquid-retaining means depends from a laminate sheet formed by sealing portions of the moulded base piece (which surround the recess) to the backing material. The liquid is able to pass between the liquid-retaining means and the neck, because, as the container is closed, there is no need to restrict the flow of liquid.
  • the neck provides a narrow conduit through which the medicament may be dispensed from the liquid-retaining means when the container is unsealed at the weakened portion in the neck.
  • the weakened portion is preferably provided by a reduced thickness of material forming the neck. Preferably, the weakened portion is a scored line on the backing material crossing the neck substantially normally thereto. The weakened portion of the neck is capable of being broken by finger pressure to unseal the pack to dispense a single dose of liquid medicament through the neck. The weakened portion may be arranged to be deformed one or more times by finger pressure before breaking to unseal the pack. When the weakened portion breaks there is provided an aperture through which the medicament is dispensed.

  • the width of the neck is such as to allow the medicament to be dispensed dropwise to allow administration of the medicament to a precise location.
  • the liquid medicament is volatile at room temperature, more preferably the liquid medicament is a decongestant inhalation product used for treating the symptoms of cold/flu, most preferably the liquid medicament is an aromatic mixture of essential oils and spices such as pine oil, cinnamon oil and menthol for example that available from the applicant under the trade mark Karvol®.
  • the single dose of liquid medicament is from about 0.1 ml to about 5 ml, more preferably from about 0.5 ml to about 2 ml most preferably about 1 ml.
