Definitions
- the present invention relates to means for presentation of medicaments, in particular to a form of packaging and dispensing liquid medicaments such as decongestant inhalation products.
- Decongestant inhalation products are often liquids.
- the present invention provides a closed container holding a single dose of a liquid medicament, the container comprising liquid-retaining means and a hollow neck extending from the liquid-retaining means, a weakened portion being provided in the neck of the container substantially perpendicular to and crossing the neck, whereby application of finger pressure can bend the neck about the weakened portion to break open the neck and release the liquid medicament.
- the pack In providing for the administration of a single dose of liquid medicament the pack allows a desired amount of medicament to be dispensed through the neck onto a precise area.
- the closed container may be pre-for ed as a container, including a neck, into which medicament is inserted prior to sealing.
- the container is formed from two parts, a first part comprising a moulded base including a recess comprising a depression and an indentation, and a second part forming a backing material which may also comprise a moulded material or it may comprise a substantially flat backing surface.
- the liquid-retaining means is defined by the depression of the first part and a portion of the second part and the neck is defined by the indentation of the first part and a further portion of the second part.
- the second part is laid over the first part and both parts are sealed around their periphery after the liquid medicament has been introduced into the first part.
- the second part may be overlaid the first part and sealed thereto.
- the parts may be sealed by known sealing technology such as adhesive and/or heat sealing means.
- the container is formed from plastics material. More preferably the moulded base and/or the backing material is made from a laminate comprising an inner layer (contacting the liquid medicament) of material impermeable to the liquid medicament and an outer layer of material to provide structural stability.
- the outer layer can be either impermeable or permeable to the liquid medicament. It may be of value to use an outer layer of a less expensive permeable material such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in combination with a impermeable inner layer of a material such as polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) . In such a preferred form, the outer layer may be thicker than the inner layer.
- the liquid-retaining means may be any receptacle which can contain the liquid medicament. It may comprise a bulbous chamber depending from a substantially flat sheet, the chamber being fluidly connected to the neck. Where the pack is formed from two parts as described hereinabove, preferably the liquid-retaining means depends from a laminate sheet formed by sealing portions of the moulded base piece (which surround the recess) to the backing material. The liquid is able to pass between the liquid-retaining means and the neck, because, as the container is closed, there is no need to restrict the flow of liquid.
- the neck provides a narrow conduit through which the medicament may be dispensed from the liquid-retaining means when the container is unsealed at the weakened portion in the neck.
- the weakened portion is preferably provided by a reduced thickness of material forming the neck. Where the container is formed from two parts as described hereinabove, either or both parts may bear the weakened portion. Preferably, the weakened portion is a scored line on the backing material crossing the neck substantially normally thereto. The weakened portion of the neck is capable of being broken by finger pressure to unseal the pack to dispense a single dose of liquid medicament through the neck. The weakened portion may be arranged to be deformed one or more times by finger pressure before breaking to unseal the pack. When the weakened portion breaks there is provided an aperture through which the medicament is dispensed.
- the width of the neck will define the size of the aperture and may allow a continuous flow of the liquid medicament to be dispensed, or it may be dispensed dropwise.
- the width of the neck is such as to allow the medicament to be dispensed dropwise to allow administration of the medicament to a precise location.
- the liquid medicament is volatile at room temperature, more preferably the liquid medicament is a decongestant inhalation product used for treating the symptoms of cold/flu, most preferably the liquid medicament is an aromatic mixture of essential oils and spices such as pine oil, cinnamon oil and menthol for example that available from the applicant under the trade mark Karvol®.
- the single dose of liquid medicament is from about 0.1 ml to about 5 ml, more preferably from about 0.5 ml to about 2 ml most preferably about 1 ml.
- a further aspect of the invention provides a pack adapted to hold a single dose of liquid medicament in a liquid-retaining portion, the pack being formed from a moulded plastics base sealed by a substantially flat plastics backing material, said pack including a neck extending from the liquid-retaining portion wherein the neck comprises a weakened portion capable of being broken by finger pressure to unseal the pack to dispense a single dose of liquid medicament through the neck.
- Such a pack may be adapted to hold a single dose of liquid medicament in a cavity, the cavity comprising a liquid-retaining chamber and a neck having a weakened portion capable of being broken by finger pressure, the pack having a gripping portion on either side of the weakened neck portion, said gripping portions being provided by a substantially flat laminate sheet formed from a portion of the moulded base sealed to the backing material, and said gripping portions providing means for application of finger pressure to break the neck about its weakened portion to dispense a single dose of liquid medicament through the neck.
- the moulded base comprises a recess located substantially centrally of the moulded base and a flat surround, said recess comprising a depression and an elongate indentation.
- the backing material is adapted to overlie and to seal the moulded base to retain a single unit dose of liquid medicament within a cavity defined by the recess and the backing material, the cavity comprising a neck defined by the elongate indentation and a portion of the backing material and a liquid-retaining chamber defined by the depression and a further portion of the backing material, the neck having a weakened portion capable of being broken by finger pressure and through which neck the liquid medicament may be dispensed when the weakened portion is broken.
- the pack has a gripping portion on either side of the weakened portion, providing means for application of finger pressure to break the neck about its weakened portion.
- An additional aspect of the invention provides packaging means comprising a plurality of packs each pack being removable singly from the packaging means and each pack comprising a single dose of a liquid medicament
- the packaging means being formed from a backing piece and a moulded base piece, the base piece comprising an array of recesses, each recess comprising a liquid-retaining depression in fluid connection with an elongate indentation, the packaging means being sealed by the backing piece to form an array of cavities holding said liquid medicament, each cavity comprising a liquid-containing chamber defined by a depression and a portion of the backing piece and a neck defined by an elongate indentation and a further portion of the backing piece, each neck comprising a weakened portion, such that each pack of the packing means can be separately and irreversibly unsealed by application of finger pressure to break open the neck at the weakened portion to dispense the liquid medicament from the chamber through the opened neck.
- the invention also provides the use of a container, pack or packaging means as described herein to dispense at least one single dose of liquid medicament when the container or the or each pack is unsealed by finger pressure, and delivering said liquid medicament to a precise location such as a fabric substrate (eg pillow or bed clothes of the user) .
- a fabric substrate eg pillow or bed clothes of the user
- a process for the manufacture of the container, pack or packaging means described herein, each pack of which dispenses a single dose of a liquid medicament comprises the steps of:-
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the first sheet of the pack (cavity downwards) .
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of, blister upwards of a blister pack containing Karvol (RTM) .
- Figure 3 is a section of the pack along arrow A-A shown in Figure 2.
- the blister pack comprises a first sheet (1) , which is a PVC/PVDC laminate, including a concave depression (3) in fluid connection with an elongate indentation (5) which together create a recess (7) .
- An impermeable thin layer of PVDC (9) forms the inner side of the first sheet (1) and lines the recess (7) .
- An outer layer (11) of the first sheet (1) formed of PVC provides structural rigidity to the recess (7) .
- the recess (7) is substantially filled with a single dose (1 ml) of Karvol®.
- a second flat sheet (13) of a similar PVC/PVDC laminate (PVDC innermost) is adhesively fixed to the first sheet (1) to form a blister pack containing a single dose of Karvol within a blister (15) .
- the blister (15) comprises a bulbous chamber (17) and neck (19) defined respectively by the depression (3) and indentation (5) in the first sheet
- the second sheet (13) has a scored line (21) running perpendicular to and across the elongate indentation (5) .
- a portion of the line (21) forming part of the neck acts as a weakened portion of the neck (19) .
- the assembled pack comprises the blister (15) containing the Karvol medicament surrounded by a flat laminate sheet (23) comprising the first (1) and second (13) sheets.
- finger pressure is applied to the laminate sheet (23) either side of the scored line (21) . This snaps open the neck (19) about the line (21) and irreversibly unseals the blister (15) .
- the single dose of Karvol® contained in the blister (15) can be poured out through the open neck (19) .
