Abstract
A fuel ignition system and method of making the same are provided, the system (10) having a unit for detecting when an igniter (25) has been heated to ignition temperature, the detecting unit comprising a receiving member (34) for receiving at least some of the electrons emitted from the heated igniter (25) and an electrical circuit (24) for determining from the received electrons an emission rate of the electrons and for operating a fuel feeding device (14) to feed fuel to a burner (11) only when the determined emission rate is at a certain level that proves that the igniter (25) is at ignition temperature.

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 22 September 1994 (22.09.94); original claims unchanged; new claims 11-19 added (3 pages)]
11. A system or method as set forth in claims 1 or 2, characterized in that said receiving means (34) comprises a member (34), in that said igniter (25) has opposite ends (26 and 27) , in that said means (16) for heating said igniter comprises a source of alternating current having two power source leads (30 and 29) for being respectively electrically interconnected to said opposite ends (26 and 27) of said igniter (25) , in that a lead means (37) has opposite ends one of which is electrically inter¬ connected to said member (34) and the other of which is electrically interconnected to ground (53), and in that resistors (48 and 47) respectively electrically interconnect said two power source leads (30 and 29) to said lead means (37) at a point (42) thereof intermediate said ends thereof whereby said member (34) is adapted to develop an electrical voltage that has a present magnitude that is related to the amount of emitted electrons that are being received by said member (34) at that time.
12. A system or method as set forth in claim 11, characterized in that said lead means (37) has a high imped¬ ance resistor (55) therein intermediate said point (42) and said member (34) and in that a capacitor (39) has opposite ends (38 and 40) respectively electrically interconnected to said lead means (37) on opposite sides of said high imped-
- 17 -
ance resistor (55) so as to be in parallel therewith.
13. A system or method as set forth in claim 11, characterized in that said determining means (24) for deter¬ mining said emission rate comprises an electrical circuit means that is electrically interconnected to said member (34) and develops said electrical voltage that has a present magnitude that is related to the amount of emitted electrons that are being received by said member (34) at that time.
14. A system or method as set forth in claim 13, characterized in that said operating means (15) for operat¬ ing said feeding means (14) operates said feeding means only when said magnitude of said electrical voltage reaches a certain level.
15. A system or method as set forth in claim 14, characterized in that said means (16) for applying an elec¬ trical current to said igniter (25) applies an alternating current thereto, and in that said electrical circuit means (24) has means (16) for applying an alternating current to said igniter (25) and said member (34) so as to create
- 18 -
through a diode effect between said igniter and said member a pulsating direct current voltage, said electrical circuit means (24) having a capacitor (39) for filtering said pul¬ sating direct current voltage so as to create said electri¬ cal voltage as a non-pulsating direct current voltage from said pulsating direct current voltage.
16. A system or method as set forth in claim 11, characterized in that said member (34) is a metallic member, for example being made of stainless steel.
17. A system or method as set forth in claim 16, characterized in that said igniter (25) comprises silicon carbide material.
18. A system or method as set forth in claim 17, characterized in that said metallic member (34) comprises a flat plate.
19. A system or method as set forth in claim 18, characterized in that said flat plate (34) is disposed approximately 0.0635 to 0.0762 cm from said igniter (25).
