Definitions
- the invention relates to an optical signalling device for vehicles and water-borne craft.
- Vehicles equipped with lights comprising sidelights, dipped headlights, headlights, foy- lights and optical direction and reversing indicators are well-known.
- the lighting of the said lights happens by means of commands activatable by the vehicle driver and are associated to, for example, the dashboard in an automobile or water-borne craft, or to the handles on the handlebars in the case of a motor cycle.
- a device allowing the contemporaneous intermittent lighting-up of the yellow-orange direction-indicators, conventionally to signal the presence of a stationary vehicle on the roadside, or also to indicate a vehicle's rapid and sudden deceleration.
- No distinctive device is envisaged, however, which can signal, rapidly and easily visibly to other road- or sea-users, an emergency situation or a situation calling for care and attention.
- a vehicle In the case where a vehicle is stationary it might be useful to be able to signal that help is needed, perhaps due to illness or to mechanical failure of the vehicle, while in the case of a moving vehicle it might be necessary to attract the attention of the other travellers to the presence of obstacles (for example, fallen rocks, other fallen objects from other vehicles, oil or other slippery substances on the road) or to the presence of banks of fog or ice on the road or bad road conditions, or other dangerous situations which necessitate special care.
- obstacles for example, fallen rocks, other fallen objects from other vehicles, oil or other slippery substances on the road
- a principal aim of the present invention is to overcome the above-mentioned inconvenients by providing a device which permits of effecting a special optical emergency signal in the case of a stationary vehicle, or a request for special driving care and attention in the case of a moving vehicle's signalling.
- a further aim of the invention is to make this device very simple and economical, easily applicable to vehicles or water-borne craft on the market.
- the said aims are fully satisfied by the optical signalling device for motor vehicles or water- borne craft of the invention, which is characterised as in the claims that follow, and in particular by the fact that it envisages the use of one or more lights emitting light of a different colour from those usually used, or which are of a shape that immediately attracts the attention of other road- or water-users.
- the invention is characterised in that it envisages the possibility of intermittent and sequential lighting order of the traditional-type lights in order to obtain a rotating moving-light effect around the vehicle.
- FIG. 2 Figures 2, 3 and 4 schematically show a vehicle on which the device is applied.
- 1 denotes a light on a vehicle 2.
- the vehicle 2 is an automobile, schematically illustrated in figures 2, 3 and 4, but the device of the present invention could be applied equally to motorcycles or boats.
- 3 denotes a battery of the vehicle, or in any case a source of low-tension electrical energy (normally 12-volt) for a plurality of bulbs inserted into the lights 1 of the vehicle and activated by means of commands positioned on the dashboard of the automobile or boat or on the handles of the motorcycle handlebars.
- the said bulbs are of the sort conventionally used as direction indicators 11, posterior brake indicators 12, reverse indicators, foglamps, sidelights, front dipped headlights and front mainbeam headlights 9.
- the said bulbs because of the special coloured protection glass of the light, emit a light which externally appears as white, yellow-orange or red.
- the vehicle may also comprise a further light 14, located externally and housing a bulb 4 which, when lit up emits a light of a different colour from the preceding, for example bright violet, thanks to a special coloured protective light- cover 5, or thanks to the colouring of the bulb itself.
- the light-cover 5 is of the transparent type, made of glass or plastic material.
- at least one of the conventional lights of the vehicle can comprise a further bulb 4 in addition to the conventional bulbs, which further bulb 4 emits a light which appears externally as a different colour to that of conventional lights, for example bright violet.
- the device of the present invention can further comprise, according to what is illustrated in figure 1, a circuit 6 which produces an intermittent lighting of the said bulbs 4 producing a light of a different colour.
- the activation of the said bulbs 4 and of the circuit 6 happens by means of a button or lever 8 positioned on a dashboard 7 or in any case in a place accessible to the driver.
- a circuit 6 can be inserted providing also for the automatic turning-off of the bulb 4 after a predetermined time, regulatable by means of a potentiometer command (not illustrated), from about 20 seconds to 15 minutes. It is also envisaged that the circuit 6 can be connected to at least one bulb, either conventional or not, for each light of the vehicle and that the said circuit is of the type providing a lighting-up and a turning-off in sequence of the said bulbs 4 to which it is connected, in such a way as to create a rotating-movement optical effect around the vehicle.
- the bulbs 4, in the absence of the circuit 6, would have a continuous-type lighting commanded by the button or lever 8.
- the circuit 6, connected to the front headlights 9 and to the posterior brake indicators 12 alternatingly would light-up and turn off the two headlights and the two brakelights, in such a way that one headlight and one brakelight would always be lit up.
- a light and light-cover could be used which are conventional, but of a different shape than traditional lights, in particular triangular lights (recalling thus the triangles which car drivers, in cases of mechanical failure, should place at about 50 metres from the vehicle) to signal a situation of particular emergency and to call others' attention, constituting an invitation to others to proceed with particular care and attention.
- the device of the invention in its various embodiments permits of providing every vehicle with an optical signal having the functions, respectively, of appealing for help or for care and attention, according to whether the vehicle is stationary or in movement.
- a further advantage of the invention is represented by the fact that the device is extremely simple and economical.
- a still further advantage of the invention is that the device can favour a reduction in the number of accidents since it activates a cautionary signal, and can enable more rapid help to be provided in the case of a stationary vehicle.
