Abstract
An EEG monitor utilizes a portable acquisition module (14) and a substantially stationary processing module (12). The EEG signals are acquired and converted to an oversampled stream of digital signals by a sigma-delta modulator (64) located in the data acquisition module. The signals are then filtered by a decimation filter (62) located in the processing module. Additional means are also provided to monitor the electrode leads to detect when the leads become unplugged. The monitor provides all power to the data acquisition module over a single twisted line which transmits data as well.

AMENDED CLAIMS

1. A monitor for receiving electrical signals from a living body and processing such signals to obtain information relating to a bodily function or organ, said monitor comprising: means for acquiring the electrical signals through one or more electrodes connected to the body, said electrical signals being unfiltered in a preselected bandwidth greater than the bandwidth into which the electrical signals are expected to fall, said means for acquiring being located within a first housing and including a means for receiving the unfiltered electrical signals in analog form and converting the signals into an unfiltered stream of digital signals; means for filtering said stream of digital signals to isolate signals of interest from said stream of digital signals, said means for filtering being located in a second housing separate from a housing in which said means for acquiring is located; means for transmitting said unfiltered electrical signals from said means for acquiring to said means for filtering.
2. The monitor of claim 1 wherein said means for receiving the analog signals is an analog modulator which includes means for outputting signals in a one-bit digital stream.
3. The monitor of claim 2 wherein said modulator further comprises means for outputting said one bit digital stream at a rate greater than twice the rate required by the Nyquist principle.
4. The monitor of claim 1 wherein said means for acquiring is a portable device of a size that fits within a human hand.
5. The monitor of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of units of said means for receiving and converting all located in a single housing.

17. The monitor for receiving electrical signals from a living body of claim 16 wherein said means for acquiring comprises a transformer which receives said voltage pulse through said means for connecting.
18. The monitor for receiving electrical signals from a living body of claim 16 wherein said means for detecting comprises a comparator which measures said droop after a fixed time interval elapses and compares said mesured droop to a predefined level.
19. A monitor for receiving electrical signals from a living body and processing such signals to obtain information relating to a bodily function or organ, said monitor comprising means for acquiring the electrical signals through one or more electrodes connected to the body, said electrical signals being unfiltered in a preselected bandwidth greater than the bandwidth into which the electrical signals are expected to fall, said means for acquiring being located within a housing and including a means for receiving the unfiltered electrical signals in analog form and converting the signals into an unfiltered stream of one-bit digital signals that is output at a rate greater than twice the rate required by the Nyquist principle; means for filtering said stream of digital signals to isolate signals of interest from said stream of digital signals, said means for filtering including means for downsampling said stream of digital signals; means for transmitting said unfiltered electrical signals from said means for acquiring to said means for filtering.
