Definitions

  • This invention relates to an apparatus for controlling power supply to a computer monitor, and in particular, to an apparatus for controlling power supply to a computer monitor so that power supply is automatically cut off when a computer keyboard is not used for a desired amount of time.
  • the object of this invention is to provide an apparatus that will automatically cut off power supply to the monitor when a clock signal from a keyboard discontinues for a desired amount of time. Power supply to the monitor will resume when the keyboard generates clock signals again.
  • the invention is an apparatus for controlling power supply to a computer monitor as defined by the claims and its specific embodiment shown in the attached drawings of this report.
  • the apparatus for controlling power supply to a computer monitor has the following parts: a first, second, third, and fourth join port that connect a computer body, an A.C voltage source, a keyboard, and a monitor.
  • a pulse generator is connected to a connection node A between the first join port and the third join port to generate a power supply control signal in response to a clock signal from the keyboard.
  • a time control circuit is connected between a connection node B in the pulse generator and a Vcc terminal for controlling the duration of the power supply control signal from the pulse generator.
  • a power control circuit is connected between the second join port and the fourth join port, thereby switching the power which is supplied from the A.C voltage source to the monitor in response to the power supply control signal from the pulse generator.
  • the power control circuit of the present invention is comprised of: a photo TRIAC driver PT which is connected to the pulse generator through a resistor R9 and has a diode Dl and a TRIAC Ql; resistors Rl and R3 for current limitation which are connected between the photo TRIAC driver PT and the second join port; and a TRIAC Q2 which is connected between the second join port and the fourth join port, thereby switching the power which is supplied from the A.C voltage source to the monitor. Also, a manual switch SW6 is connected between the second join port and the fourth join port.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates a diagram for explaining the conception of the present invention
  • FIG. 2 illustrates a detailed circuit for an apparatus for controlling power supply to a computer monitor according to the present invention
  • FIG. 3A and 3B illustrate a signal wave form for explaining electrical operation of the detailed circuit of FIG. 2.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates a diagram for explaining the conception of the invention.
  • a first join port JP1 in an apparatus for controlling power supply 3 is connected to a keyboard port 2 in a computer body 1, and a second join port JP2 in the apparatus 3 is also connected to an A.C voltage source 7.
  • a third join port JP3 of the apparatus 3 is connected to a keyboard 4 and a fourth join port JP2 of the apparatus 3 is connected to a monitor 5.
  • a clock signal generated in a clock signal generator (not shown) of the keyboard 4 is transmitted to the apparatus 3, whereby the power from the A.C voltage source 7 is supplied to the monitor 5 by the apparatus 3.
  • the clock signal generator in the keyboard 4 stops generating clock signals for a desired amount of time, the power supplied from the A.C voltage source 7 to the monitor 5 is cut off by the apparatus 3.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates a detailed circuit for the apparatus for controlling power supply to a computer monitor according to the present invention. Electrical operation of the circuit will be described in conjunction with FIG. 3A and 3B.
  • the circuit has a time control circuit 8, a pulse generator 9, and a power control circuit 10.
  • the pulse generator 9 is connected to a connection node A between the first join port JPl and the third join port JP3 ; a time control circuit 8 is connected to a connection node B between a threshold terminal THR and a discharge terminal DIS in an one-short pulse generator 6; the power control circuit 10 is connected to an output terminal Q in the one-short pulse generator 6 through a resistor R9 ; and the power control circuit 10 is also connected between the second join port JP2 and the fourth join port JP4.
  • a clock signal like a signal wave form of FIG. 3A which is generated from the clock signal generator (not shown) by the key operation in the keyboard 4 is transmitted to a trigger terminal TR of the one-short pulse generator 6 through a resistor Rll for current limitation.
  • the one-short pulse generator 6 generates a power supply control signal like a signal wave form of FIG. 3B in response to the clock signal. Then, the power supply control signal is transmitted to a photo TRIAC driver PT through an output terminal Q of the one-short pulse generator 6 and a resistor R9. At this time, the duration T of the power supply control signal from the one-short pulse generator 6 is changed by operation of switches SW1 to SW5. The duration T is determined by the time constant determination circuit consisting of resistors R4, R5, R6, R7 and a capacitor C5.
  • the power supply control signal from the output terminal Q of the one-short pulse generator 6 is not immediately transferred to a low level but is maintained at a high level for the duration T as shown in FIG. 3B. Then, the power supply control signal is transferred to a low level.
  • the clock signal is supplied to the one-short pulse generator 6, the power supply control signal from the output terminal Q in the one-short pulse generator 6 is supplied to a light emitting diode Dl through resistors R9 and RIO, and the light emitting diode Dl is then turned on.
  • a TRIAC Ql in the photo TRIAC driver PT is also turned on.
  • the power from the A.C voltage source 7 that is connected to the second join port JP2 is supplied to the gate electrode of TRIAC Q2 through resistors R3, Rl and the TRIAC Ql, the TRIAC Q2 is turned on. Accordingly, the power from the A.C voltage source 7 is supplied to the fourth join port JP4 through the TRIAC Q2.
  • the photo TRIAC driver PT and the TRIAC Q2 are turned off and consequently the power supplied from the A.C voltage source 7 to the fourth join port JP2 is cut off.
  • capacitors C2 and C3 are used to satisfy the operation condition of the one-short pulse generator 6; a resistor R12 is used to pull up the potential of the connection node A; and a capacitor Cl along with varistors RV1 and RV2 are used to protect a surge, respectively. Also, a manual switch SW6 is used to manually supply the power from the A.C voltage source 7 to the fourth join port JP4.
  • the monitor does not consume any power while the keyboard is not used, because the power supplied to the monitor is controlled automatically.
