Description

A PACKAGE FOR HOUSEHOLD PACKING MATERIALS STORED INTO A ROLL AROUND A ROLLER-LIKE CORE, E.G. FILM, BAG AND THE LIKE
This invention relates to a package for household packing materials stored into a roll around a roller-like core, e.g. film, bag, and the like.
As is known, extensive use is made in home, catering organization, restaurant environments, etc., of a varietv of packing materials and wrappers made, for example, of polythene, polypropylene, aluminum, baking paper. etc.. especially where food products require to be manipulated either during their preparation or for storage.
Such packing materials, in fact, allow food products to be conveniently wrapped up in a satisfactory state from the sanitary standpoint, or pans and baking tins to be lined therewith for the cooking process, or may be used as required for other purposes .
Those packing materials have been sold heretofore in packages of box-like shape, most frequently cardboard or plastics boxes. The packages can be opened by raising and folding over a side portion thereof which acts as a lid, thereby enabling the user to pull out a required length of packing material each time.
The box package can then be closed again and set aside .
While being from various aspects advantageous, such known packages are still deficient as regards handling convenience.
It is not uncommon, in fact, for the roll of packing material to slip bodily out, instead of staying within its package, which is objectionable both on account of the inconvenience and waste of time represented by its replacement into the package, and of the possibility of the packing material becoming soiled- It is the object of this invention to provide a package of the kind specified, which can overcome the above-mentioned deficiencies.
This object is achieved by a package as indicated being characterized in that it comprises a case having a tubular skirt closed by end caps fitted at opposite ends thereof and εlitted lengthwise.
Further features and the advantages of a package according to the invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given bv way of non-limitative example with reference to the accompanying drawing figures showing: in Figure 1 a partly exploded. cutaway perspective view of a film wrapper package according to the invention; and in Figure 2 an exploded, cutaway perspective view of a bag package according to the invention.
With ref rence to Figure 1. generally shown at 1 is a package according to the invention, which contains a household, or semi-professional packing material 2, e.g. for use by catering organizations, restaurants, and the like. In the example under consideration the packing material may be a film or a foil material. The film 2 is stored into a roll around a roller type of core 3, also called cop or mandrel, which is formed from a cardboard and usually has a diameter of 20 to 50 mm.
The film 2 may be made of a variety of materials, e,g plastics materials such as polythene and polypropylene, but could be a foil or sheet of a different material, such as aluminum or baking paper.
The package 1 comprises a substantially cylindrical case 4 formed around an axis X-X and having a tubular skirt 5 which is closed at opposite ends by end caps 6 and 7 having a diameter dimension of 30 to 60 mm. such that it can be grasped with one hand, and a thickness dimension of 1 to 2 mm, so that it is deformable. The skirt 5 is spanned lengthwise by an end-to-end slit 8 having longitudinal edges 9 and 10. The lenghtwise slit 8 has a predetermined limited breadth. In this example, it is.15 mm wide.
A longitudinal lip 11 juts out from the skirt 5 along the edge 9 of the slit 8. The lip 11 has a sharp serrated free edge 12.
The skirt 5. complete with the lip 11, and the end cap 6 are an integral injection molding of plastics, e.g. polystyrene.
The opposite cap 7, which also is injection molded from plastics, e.g. polystyrene, is driven into the skirt 5 end to act as a plug therefor, and is bonded to the skirt as by ultrasonic spot welding.
Advantageously, the caps 6 and 7 are provided with small bosses 13 and 14 which extend a short distance inside the skirt. These bosses are sized for slack male/female engagement with the roller-like core 3 ends. In this way, the core 3 will be held inside the case by the bosses 13 and 14 rotatably about the latter.
The slit 8 is covered by a rectangular strip 15 of a pliable plastics material which overlaps the sharp serrated lip 11. The strip 15, whose outer surface may be arranged to accommodate inscriptions, label-fashion thereon, is attached to the edges 9 and 10 of the slit 8 in a tearable manner by self-sticking side bands 17 and 18.
Preferably, the skirt 5 is formed on its outside with ergono ic impressions 18, in this example a grained surface.
In use, the strip 15 is removed and a sufficient length of the film is pulled out through the slit 8, whereafter the length of film can be torn off along the sharp serrated edge 11. While the film is being torn off, the. roll is clamped against rotation by the deformed skirt under the pressure from the user's hand grasping it.
With reference to Figure. 2. generally shown at 101 is a package, according to the invention, for packing material 102 intended for household or semi-professional us"e, such as by catering organizations, restaurants, and the like. In this example, the packing material is a continuous set of bags.
The bags 102 are connected together along a weakening line 103, which is formed of cut sections 104 of short length and a cut mid-section 105 having a predetermined longer length.
The bags 102 are rolled around a tubular roller-like core 106. also referred to as the cop or mandrel, which is formed from a cardboard and would normally measure 20 to 50 mm in diameter.
The bags 102 may be formed from a variety of materials, e.g. such plastics materials as polythene and polypropylene.
The package. 101 comprises a substantially cylindrical case 107 having an axis X-X and a tubular cylinder skirt 108 which is shut off at its opposite ends by caps, both indicated at 109, and has a diameter of 30 to 60 mm, so that it can be grasped in one's hand, and a thickness dimension of 1 to 2 mm, so that it is deformable.
The skirt 108 is spanned lengthwise by an end-to-end slit 110 having longitudinal edges 111 and 112.
The lengthwise slit 110 has a predetermined limited breadth. In this example, it is 15 mm wide.
A tooth 113 projects into the slit 110 from the skirt 107 along the edge 111 of the slit 110, approximately mid-length of the slit.
The tooth 113 has a predetermined width which is smaller than the predetermined length of the cut mid-section 105 and is rounded off.
A notch 114 is formed in the skirt 108 along, the slit edge 112. approximately mid-length of the slit. It faces the slit in the direction of the tooth and defines, together with the tooth, a suitably sized space 115 to allow a bag to be grasped.
The skirt 105 and tooth 113 are an integral inkection molding from a suitable plastics, such as polystyrene.
The end caps 109, which are also injection molded from a suitable plastics-, such as polystyrene, are snap fitted over the tubular skirt to a snug fit. For this purpose, each cap 109 is formed with a cylindrical edge 116 having an inward annular ridge 117 adapted to snap into a groove 118 formed on the exterior of the skirt 108.
Advantageously, the end caps 109 are formed with respective coaxial bosses 119 which project a short distance inside the skirt. These bosses 119 are. sized for slack male/female engagement with the ends of the core 106. Thus, the core 106 is held inside the case and supported rotatably in the skirt by the bosses 119, coaxially with the skirt.
Preferably, the skirt 108 is formed on its outside with ergonomic impressions 120 which are in the form of a grained surface in this example.
In use, the case is held in one hand, and a bag 102 grasped with the other hand through the space 115, to pull out the bag through the slit 108. As the weakening line 103 comes under the slit, the tooth 113 engages the cut mid-section 105 while holding the other bags inside the case. At this point, it will suffice to tear off the pulled-out bag by rupture along the weakening line. While tearing off the bag, a more powerful grip of the user's hand will compress the skirt against the roll and hold it stationary.
A major advantage of the inventive package is its uniquely practical handling, as brought about by that, with the package held in a user's hand, the roll is kept securely inside the package and any risk of the roll being dragged undesirably out of its package positively averted.
As a section of the packing material is being drawn out, the core, which is mounted rotatably on the bosses within the case coaxially with the latter, turns around the bosses, with the beneficial result that the roll will not rub against the skirt. Accordingly, the bags can be drawn out in a smooth manner without jerks.
Another advantage of the package according to the invention is that it is also favorable from the sanitary standpoint. A further advantage is that the package of this invention can be held in one's hand more securely and comfortably, so that it is also favorable from the ergonomic standpoint.
In addition, this package can be manufactured economically on automated equipment, which is no least advantage in the instance of an article, which is to be produced in very large volumes.
Of course, a person of skill in this art may
, choose to make a number of changes and modifications
' unto the packages described above, contingent on specific requirements, without departing from the protection scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims .
