According to the invention the apparatus comprises a knife device (8) for making a vertical cut through the bale, which is positioned in a space (2), in its transverse direction. The knife device comprises at least one knife means (14, 15) which is intended to make a vertical cut in the bale in its longitudinal direction. A pusher device (5) is arranged for moving the bale in its longitudinal direction in the space (2).
Description
Apparatus for dividing bales into pieces This invention relates to an apparatus for dividing bales mechanically into pieces, preferably hay bales.
When making hay in recent times it has been common to lay the hay in large plastic bags for creating hay bales, which are allowed to remain on the field until the hay shall be used. A problem of this type of handling is the difficulty to get the hay bales into pieces inside the cow house or in connection to this one, when the hay shall be portioned out to the animals.
This invention intends to solve this problem and offer an apparatus which in a mechnical way divides the hay bale into pieces. This has been made possible by an apparatus of the kind mentioned by way of introduction, which is characterized by the combination of the following features:
- The apparatus comprises a frame having a space for receiving the bale, the space having two end portions; - A pusher device is positioned at the one end portion of the space and is intended to move the bale in its longitudinal direction towards the other end portion of the space;
- A knife device is raiseably and lowerably arranged essentially in a vertical plane at the other end portion of the space for making an essentially vertical cut through the bale in its transverse direction; - The knife device comprises at least one knife means which is positioned on that part of the knife device which is directed towards the first end portion of the space, and which is intended to make an essentially vertical cut through the bale essentially in its longitudinal direction.
Due to this design of the apparatus there is achieved an effective dividing of the hay bales, enclosed by plastic material, into pieces. In this connection the knife means arranged on the rear side of the knife device actively contributes to the effective division into pieces, because during the movement of the knife device through the bale in its transverse direction the knife means makes a vertical cut in the longitudinal direction of the bale. This fact has the consequence that the bale piece cut out easily falls into pieces. A preferred embodiment of the invention shall be described more closely with reference to the accompanying drawings, where Fig. 1 shows a view straightly from the front of the apparatus according to the invention, and Fig. 2, 3 show a perspective view of the
apparatus, seen from the side.
Referring to the drawing is shown there the apparatus according to the invention, which apparatus comprises a frame 1. This frame has a space 2 with two end portions 3, 4. The bale is intended to be placed in its longitudinal direction between these end portions. A pusher device in the form of a plunger device 5 is arranged at the first end portion 3 of the space 2. This plunger device comprises a plate 6 which is intended to be applied against the one end portion of the bale. The plate 6 is connected with a not shown plunger rod, which is arranged inside an elongated tube means 7. The plunger is intended to be operated in a hydraulic way, whereby the plate 6 is displaceable towards and from, respectively, the second end portion 4 of the space. The space 2 suitably has a V-formed bottom, whereby the bale gets a secure contact in the space.
A knife device 8 is arranged at the second end portion 4 of the space. This device comprises a cutting blade 9 with a horizontal extension over essentially the whole width of the space 2. Furthermore, the cutting blade 9 has an essentially vertical extension and is raiseably and lowerably arranged in a vertical plane at the other end portion 4. The cutting blade 9 at its bottom has preferably V-form with the point in the middle portion, the angle of the V amounting to about 120°. The portions at the bottom of the cutting blade 9 are ground to a cutting edge. This fact plus the V-form of the cutting blade make a good penetration of the bale possible when the cutting blade moves downwards. The cutting blade 9 has a tubular means 10, 11 at its both lateral end portions, each of which means being intended to slide on a rod 12, 13 having a vertical extension. This fact makes the movement of the cutting blade upwards and downwards possible which movement is suitably carried out in a hydraulic way.
The cutting blade 9 has two knife means 14, 15 on its rear side, i.e. that side that is directed towards the first end portion 3 of the space 2. These knife means are positioned on each side of the vertical center line of the cutting blade and are intended to make essentially vertical cuts in the bale in its longitudinal direction during the movement downwards of the cutting blade.
The apparatus also comprises a means 16 which in a hydraulic way is movable downwards or upwards in the vertical plane, and which is intended to fix the bale by pressing against the bottom portion of the space during the dividing of the bale into pieces. This means which comprises a plate 17 is positioned inside the cutting blade 9, seen in the direction
towards the first end portion 3 of the space 2.
The use of the apparatus according to the invention is made in the following way: A bale which shall be divided into pieces is placed in the space 2, whereafter the plunger device 5 with the plate 6 presses the bale towards the second end portion 4 of the space 2. In this position the cutting blade 9 and the holding means 16 with the plate 17 are held uplifted. When the bale has come into the right position, the plate 17 is laid against the top side of the bale for holding the same. Thereafter the cutting blade is brought through the bale by means of the hydraulic power and accordingly cuts out a piece of the same. In the same operation the knife means 14, 15 on the rear side of the cutting blade 9 make two vertical cuts in a portion of the bale lying inside the mentioned piece. When the cutting operation has been finished, the holding means 16 and the cutting blade 9 are brought upwards so that the bale is free. In this position the plunger device 5 can force the bale a further bit out, whereafter the cutting means again enter into action.
The invention is of course not limited to the shown embodiment but modifications of the same are of course possible within the scope of the following claims. Thus, it is for instance possible to have only one centrally positioned knife means on the rear side of the cutting blade instead of two means as has been shown in the drawing. Furthermore, it is of course possible to have other power sources than hydraulic ones for operation of the apparatus, for instance electric power sources.
