Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method of manufacturing metal-free disposable drums intended for a continuous flexible object and having a diameter within the range of 500-900 mm, said drum consisting of a cylindrical form stable sleeve of cardboard with parallel end surfaces and two circular end pieces of compressed wood chip material or plywood joined firmly to the end parts of the sleeve by means of wedge joints and having a central aperture for shaft members for winding and unwinding the object, each end piece being produced in situ of a flat support ring for the object having a central aperture for the sleeve with a cylindrical wall surface, and a flat central ring with conical peripheral surface, said rings having parallel outer and inner sides.
  • both the central ring and the support ring have conical surfaces and the conicity is so great that axial forces will be exerted on the central ring, with the risk of it being displaced out of the sleeve, particularly when uneven loading occurs on the support ring as may happen when uncoiling the cable, so that the wedge joint loosens at the diametrically opposite side of the support ring and central ring in relation to the point of load.
  • US-A-2 881 986 neither reveals nor suggests simultaneous pushing in the support and central rings after they have been placed in a more clearly defined starting position in relation to the sleeve and employing very slight conicity on the peripheral surface of the central ring.
  • the object of the invention is to eliminate the problems mentioned above and manufacture a disposable drum that fulfils said desires in a simple and efficient manner resulting in such a strong wedge joint that larger disposable drums, namely sizes up to 900 mm, can be manufactured than has been possible before in situations where the conventional, inconvenient wooden drums have had to be used, and also ensuring that the end pieces are parallel to each other and that their outer sides coincide with the end surfaces of the sleeve, thereby ensuring uniform distance between the support rings all round (360°).
  • the disposable drum according to the invention is manufactured by applying the support ring on the end part of the sleeve free from play so that, with a good fit to the sleeve it is retained in a starting position after having been pushed in a distance onto the end part shorter than the thickness of the support ring, after which the central ring, which is thicker than the support ring and has a peripheral surface with conicity of 1-5°, is inserted a limited distance into the end opening of the sleeve, this distance being less than the thickness of the central ring, said central ring at its inner side having a diameter somewhat less than the inner diameter of the sleeve so that said insertion can be performed manually, and at its outer side having a diameter somewhat larger than the inner diameter of the sleeve so that said limited insertion is ensured when an initial wedge engagement is achieved in cooperation with the inner side of the sleeve, after which the disposable drum thus pre-assembled is placed between two press members having parallel pressure surfaces facing each other, each of which covers the

  • Application is suitably performed manually on a sleeve 1 placed horizontally on a conveying belt (not shown), the width of the belt corresponding to the length of the sleeve 1 less twice the thickness of the support ring 11, the belt acting as a support and preventing the support rings 11 from being pushed too far in on the end parts 4, 5 of the sleeve 1 during this initial manual assembly phase.

  • This limited distance is at most half and preferably at most one third of the thickness of the central ring 12.

While the central rings 12 are being forced in in this way the wedge forces increase continuously and a sturdy, permanent wedge joint is achieved in the final position for each end piece, in which the sleeve 1 is clamped by radially outwardly directed wedge forces from the central ring 12 and radially inwardly directed forces from the support ring 11.
