Abstract
A tin container (10) is provided with a collar (20) secured to the upper brim. The collar has a truncated cone-shaped part (25) which from the container brim projects inwardly and downwardly and at the bottom through a bend (26) extends into a disc-shaped part (27), along the inner edge of which there is a locking groove (28) terminating the collar inwardly and serving to accommodate a complementary ring (32) of a lid (30). By this structure there is obtained good resistance towards both increased internal pressure and external force impacts, in particular those exerted on the container brim.
Description
L i d reta i n i ng co l l a r
Containers used for storage and transportation of products classified as dangerous goods, such as glue, paint and sundry other chemicals, must for safety reasons during transportation be capable of withstanding considerable external impacts, e.g. fall from a considerable height (at least 1 m), and a substantial overpressure without loosing tightness.
The invention relates to a closure for a container, preferably a tin container, of the kind stated in the introductory portion of claim 1, and its object is to provide such a closure which is capable of withstanding considerable impacts without leaking.
This object is achieved in that the colsure is shaped as stated in the characterizing portion of claim 1, since a high internal pressure by this construction will make the intermediary piece increase the abutment pressure between the essentially cylindrical wall face and the corres¬ ponding lid face, and such force impacts on the container brim which e.g. occur by fall, will be absorbed in that the angle between the two parts of the collar which cohere via the bend is changed, the bend acting as a hinge, so that at the most a negligent part of the force is trans¬ ferred to the cooperating seal faces, which are conse¬ quently not deformed by the force impact.
Expedient details of the closure according to the inven¬ tion are stated in claims 2-7.
In the following the invention is explained in more detail, reference being made to the drawing in which
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a container with fixed lid and a closure according to the invention, and
Fig. 2 shows a vertical section through a part of the container and the lid.
In the drawing, 10 is a tin container, to the upper brim of which there is secured an annular collar, in its entirety designated 20, having a centre opening for accomodating a lid 30.
The container 10 has a cylindrical outer wall 11 being secured to the collar 20 via a rolled-up material portion 15. The rolling is performed by brazing, and some of the surfaces forming part of the rolled-up material portion are provided with rubber to achieve a liquid-tight seal. The collar 20 has an intermediate piece 25 shaped like a truncated cone face. The intermediate piece 25 forms an angle a with the plane formed by the container brim. Typically, the angle a is of the size 40°. The coller 20 terminates downwardly in a locking groove 28 having essentially U-shaped cross-section, and being adapted for accomodating a complementary locking ring 32 on the lid 30. The outer wall of this locking groove is provided with an annular shoulder 29 inclining upwardly and inwardly and serving to retain the lid 30 by overlapping a correspond¬ ing oppositely directed shoulder 33 on the outer side of the locking ring 32. The abutment face between the two shoulders forms an angle b of the size 75° with the horiziontal. The lid 30 is in conventional manner provided with a number of profiles 31. In the bottom of the locking groove 28 there may in conventional manner be provided rubber or compound to establish an effective seal.
Between the locking groove 28 and the intermediary piece 25 the collar 20 has an essentially plane, disc-shaped
portion 27 extending into the intermediary piece 25 through an annular elbow or bend 26.
An increased internal pressure which will seek to press open the lid will simultaneously influence the truncated cone-shaped intermediary piece 25 in such a way that the latter through the disc-shaped portion 27 will squeeze the locking groove around the locking ring 32, whereby the force required for lifting the lid is increased.
Hereby securing of the lid 30 is improved in situations where the container is exposed to special influences while in normal situations it is unproblematic to take off the lid 30 from outside.
Known containers are particularly sensitive to force impacts on the container brim in the direction marked F. This type of impacts may e.g. occur if the container is dropped. By this type of loads particularly high demands are made on the seal which is established by the locking ring and the appertaining locking groove, since the lid 30 normally jumps off when the locking groove is deformed. Even though the locking groove is only slightly deformed there will be large risk that the seal parts are damaged with resulting leakage.
By the closure according to the invention an impact in the direction F will entail that the cylindrical outer wall 12 will become deformed in the area around the rolled-up material portion 15, and the adjacent part of the inter¬ mediary piece 25 will be displaced towards the centre of the container. This displacement, however, will be absorbed in that the angle between the disc-shaped part 27 and the intermediary piece 25 is diminished in the area around the elbow 26. Thus, a substantial displacement deriving from an impact in the direction F can be absorbed
by the intermediary piece and disc-shaped part 27 of the collar 20 without the locking groove getting deformed. A container having a closure according to the invention will therefore be extremely resistant to impacts of that kind.
The details of the shown and described construction can be changed in several ways within the scope of the invention. A possible simplification would be to replace the locking groove 28 and the lid ring 32 with a essentially cylindrical wall corresponding the outer wall of the locking groove, and a corresponding edge face on the lid, respectively.
