Description

A machine for cutting a slab of marble or similar material along a cutting plane parallel to the plane of the slab
The subject of the present invention is a machine for cutting a slab of marble or similar material along a cutting plane parallel to the plane of the slab, characterised in that it includes:
- a cutting device with a diamond wire, including a pair of pulleys supported for rotation about two parallel, horizontal axes and a diamond wire which passes around the pulleys in a closed loop within a vertical plane,
- a conveyor line for transporting the slabs through the cutting device, including means for supplying a succession of marble slabs to the cutting device, each slab being kept in a vertical plane substantially coinciding with the plane of the loop of diamond wire so that each slab is cut and divided into two half-slabs,
- means for loading the slabs to be cut onto the loading end of the conveyor line, and
- means for unloading the cut half-slabs from the output end of the conveyor line.
The invention will now be described with reference to the appended drawings, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic, elevational view of a machine according to the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the machine of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the machine of Figure
SUBSTITUTE SHEET 1 ,
Figures 4-6 are sections taken on the lines IV-IV, V-V, and VI-VI of Figure 1- and
Figure 7 is a section taken on the line VII-VII of Figure 2.
With reference to the drawings, a machine for cutting marble slabs along a cutting plane parallel to the planes of the slabs is generally indicated 1. The machine 1 includes a cutting device 2 with a fixed framework 3 which supports two pulleys 6, 7 for rotation about two parallel, horizontal axes 4, 5. A diamond wire, of known type, indicated 8, passes around the pulleys 6, 7 in a closed loop within a vertical plane. The structure of the diamond wire is not described in detail since, as already indicated, it may be of any known type and does not fall within the scope of the present invention. The inventor has set up a diamond wire of particularly small diameter which enables the machine according to the invention to be used for cutting even very thin slabs of the order of a few millimeters thick to form half-slabs which may even be only 2 mm thick and which are then used to form marble ■•sheets" for application as coverings to any surface, for example, to the walls of dwellings ςr to furniture.
The axis 5 of the lower pulley 7 is fixed but the axis 4 is carried by a slide 9 which is movable on guides 10 and is operated in known manner (by means not described in detail herein) to adjust the tension of the diamond wire.
EET The machine 1 includes a conveyor line 11 constituted by a succession of rollers 12 driven by a motor 13.
The line 11 receives a succession of slabs L which are fed through the cutting device 2.
Upstream of the cutting device, the slabs L are kept in the vertical plane by lateral supports 13 carrying rollers 14 which have vertical axes and engage the two opposite faces of each slab L (Figure 4) . The positions of the lateral supports 13 are adjustable relative to support bases 15 along a line transverse the slabs L.
Immediately upstream of the diamond wire 8 or, more precisely, of its active pass 8a, two lateral, segmented belt conveyors 16, which are in frictional engagement with the opposite faces of the slab L being cut, urge the end edges of the slabs L against the wire and advance the slabs L during the cutting operation. The two conveyors 16 are mounted on slides 17, the positions of which are adjustable relative to fixed supports 18 along a line transverse the slabs L, to enable adjustment for slabs of different thicknesses. The two conveyors 16 are driven by motor means of known type which are not shown in detail since they do not fall within the scope of the present invention. Moreover, the elimination of these details makes the drawings more readily and easily understood. Two steel plates 19, 20 disposed between the two parallel passes of the loop of diamond wire 8 and immediately behind its downstream pass (with reference to the direction of advance of the slabs L) serve to keep separate the two half-slabs L1J2 produced as a result of the cutting of a slab L and to prevent the half-slabs from contacting the downstream pass 8b of the diamond wire. Naturally, downstream of the cutting device, there are also lateral supports 21 with rollers 22 having horizontal axes and engaging the opposite faces of the pairs of half-slabs Ll, L2 to keep them in the vertical plane. At the end of the conveyor line 11 is an unloading device 22, of any type, which serves to deposit the half-slabs Ll, L2 on a rack 23. The unloading device is preferably also adapted to rotate one of the two half-slabs of each pair, as shown schematically in Figure 7, so that the rough faces of all the half-slabs Ll, L2 deposited on the rack 22 face in the same direction.
Similarly, means may be provided at the loading end of the line 11 for automatically loading the slabs L onto the line.
Naturally, the principle of the invention remaining the same, the details of construction and forms of embodiment may be varied widely with respect to those described and illustrated by way of example, without thereby departing from the scope of the present invention.
