Definitions
- This invention relates to means and methods of correcting bone deformation and, more particularly, to such means using external fixation.
- the proposed device is designed for use in traumatology and orthopedy in changing the shape of deformed bones; in lengthening the bones and in causing new growth of bone, skin, nerve tissue, blood vessels in deficient limbs, treatment of pseudo-arthrosis and osteomelitis, flesh fractures, open ultisplintered fractures with vast damage to bone and soft tissue.
- the device has no contra-indications in treatment of adults and, especially, of children.
- Bone fixators wires and pins can only be immovably connected on the rings. There can be -4 to 8 rings in the device which can bring the weight of the device to 10-1*4 lbs.
- Ilizarov 197*4 is heavy (10-1 ⁇ 4 lbs), employs many details of various shapes and purposes, and is complicated in usage.
- the proposed apparatus is multi-purpose and based on a new concept-moving connection between ring and tension rod.
- Applicant introduced for the first time threaded arched member; and connectors with a measurable dosage of movement by means of nuts on circular and straight members.
- Wires and pins has a measurable dosage of movement.
- the present invention permits full accurate mechanical adjustment of rotation is 36 ⁇ degrees which is an improvement over Ilizarov which requires manual adjustment of rotation.
- Device is simultaneously doing reposition, rotation and lengthening of the bone.
- the invention provides means and methods of correcting bone deformation comprising arched members adapted to encircle a fractured body member, straight members are adapted to connect to arched members, bone contacting members, means to connect straight members to arched members and means to connect bone contacting members to arched and straight members.
- a principal object of the invention is to provide new and improved means and methods for correcting bone fractures.
- Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved means, and methods for correcting bone deformation comprising apparatus wherein arched members are threaded, and wherein connecting members comprise olive members having first and second shaftways perpendicular to each other or three shaftways and means to clamp olive members to arched members, straight members and bone contacting members. Where olive connectors with two or three holes and nuts are assembled from two parts.
- the invention comprises two arched members 1 and 2, which are adapted to encircle a body member, such as an arm or leg, for a fracture of bone B.
- Arched members are threaded and may be 1/k OD threaded metal.
- the members 1 and 2 may be one piece members.
- Arched member would have to have one side having reversed threads so that Nut 5 could bring the members together to form a continuous, preferably circular member.
- the straight members 3 and h are threaded metal rods, 1/-4 OD for instance, which are adjustably clamped to circular members 1 and 2.
- the frame may be polymers, eutectic, ceramic, nylon, etc. materials.
- Bone contacting members 8 are passed through the bone on both sides of the fracture. These members are preferably stainless steel members. They are * passed through the bone on either side of the fracture and clamped to circular members 1 and 2, and straight members 3 and -4 by means of olive connectors 6 and head olive 10.
- Fig. 2 and 3 show detail views of a typical connecting olive shape member 12 and 13 having two or three shaftways which are perpendicular to each other. In the connection between the circular members and the straight members, the circular member would pass through one shaftway and the straight member through the other.
- the olive connections 12, 13 etc. may be clamped to the straight member k by means of nuts 9, and may be clamped to the circular member 2, etc., by means of nuts 9 «
- Fig.-4 is a perspective view of a two part nut.
- the frame comprising circular members and straight members are then positioned encircling the arm or leg and the circular members and the straight members are connected together loosely so that they can be adjusted.
- the bone contracting members 8 etc. are then loosely connected to the circular members and to the straight members, by means of the olive connectors 6.
- the frame of the present invention is much lighter and more comfortable than other apparati.
- the frame of the present invention may be applied with the use of a local anesthetic. Care should be taken to avoid the possibility of infection with conventional methods.
- the apparatus performs:
