Definitions

  • This invention relates to fire rated load-bearing building construction. More particularly, this invention relates to fire rated load-bearing column suitable for use in multi-storey buildings.
  • Another drawback with traditional columns is that they are generally formed up and poured in situ.
  • this invention provides a fire rated load-bearing column suitable for use in construction of a multi-storey building, the column being shaped to form a wall corner or wall junction fitting between wall panels which lack sufficient fire rated load-bearing capability to carry a required load expected to be encountered in case of fire, the column being substantially fabricated prior to installation and comprising:
  • a core structural member extending substantially the length of the column, the member having an angled cross-sectional shape and being capable of carrying the required load
  • the fire rated column of the invention is capable of having a light weight so that the use of heavy lifting equipment may be avoided.
  • the core structural member may consist of any suitable material including a ferrous alloy but is preferably steel of sufficient strength to support the intended load in the case of fire. While the core structural member may have any appropriate angled cross-sectional shape, preferably the cross-sectional shape is one of the following: a right angle, a T or an X (cruciform) .

  • the core structural member may comprise 200 mm x 200 mm x 13 mm angle steel; in this case the column is ⁇ apable of carrying 56 tonnes at a three metre column height. If the core structural member comprises 125 mm x 125 mm x 12 mm angle steel, the column when used as a corner element can carry 19 tonnes at a three metre column height.
  • the fire rated material may comprise any suitable material which has the desired fire rating and weight in the thickness appropriate to the column of the invention.
  • the fire rated material may comprise a foraminous cementitious material or a composite material containing, for example, vermiculite, and having a maximum density of 1000 kg/cubic metre (more preferably, less than 600 kg/cubic metre).
  • One suitable material is sold under the Trade Mark “Vermiculux”, which consists essentially of vermiculite in a cementitious matrix.
