Definitions

  • Feather and/or down product process for the prepa ⁇ ration thereof and apparatus for carrying out the process.
  • the present invention relates to a feather and/or down product, in particular a duck-down and/or goose-down product, having improved heat insulating properties and improved filling capacity.
  • a novel product having a hitherto unknown special structure which corresponds to the structure of the particularly well insulating down products from eider. It is well known that down from eider isolate significantly better than duck-down and goose-down. This is partly due to a large number of down fibres on the separate down and partly due to the form and number of prongs on the barbules; the down fibres are hereby able to adhere to each other so as to form a three- -dimensional network which stabilizes the down.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide a similar three-dimensional network in a product of duck- and/or goose-down or -feathers.
  • the product according to the invention is charac ⁇ terized in that the feathers and/or the down together with any loose fibres present are bound together in a three-dimen- sional network in which the adhesion between the feathers and/or the down as well as the fibres has been established by reaction between the hydroxyl groups of the feathers and/or the down and a compound or material which is reactive therewith, followed by polymerization.
  • This product contains a substantial volume of statio ⁇ nary air and thereby provides a higher filling capacity and a higher degree of insulation.
  • the loose fibres which are always present after washing and drying of feathers and down are bound to the down, and they thereby contribute to an increase in the filling capacity and the insulating properties.
  • the three-dimensional network product of goose- and/or duck-down and/or feathers according to the invention is well suited as filling material in eiderdowns, pillows, sleeping bags, winter garments etc.
  • the compound or material which is reactive with the hydroxyl groups of the feathers or down is preferably a metal oxide acylate, in particular of a fatty acid such as stearic acid. It is especially appropriate that the metal oxide acylate is derived from a di- or trivalent metal, preferably aluminium, and in practice it is preferred that the reactive compound is aluminium oxystearate.
  • the product can be prepared by drying the feathers and/or down for removal of their natural moisture content, whereafter the dried feathers and/or down are treated with a spray-atomized solution of a compound or material which is reactive with the hydroxyl groups of the feathers and/or down, whereafter the solvent employed is removed.
  • a spray-atomized solution of a metal oxide acylate, in particular aluminium oxystea- rate, in perchloroethylene as solvent is used.
  • the drying is carried out at about 120°C for about 6 minutes in a stirring apparatus using a stirring speed of about 40. r.p.m., that the supply of spray-atomized solution of reactive compound or material is carried out in counterflow between a downwards moving solution and an upwards moving stream of air having a velocity of from about 1.5 to about 4 meters per second, and that the solvent is removed while supplying hot air and using mechanical stirring in a stirring apparatus of the type used for the drying,
  • the drying is necessary because the metal oxide acy ⁇ late which is used in the next step would otherwise react with the natural moisture on the feathers or the down and form a waxy and greasy coating thereon.
  • the drying is advantageously carried out in a drying vessel having a steam jacket and containing a gently acting stirring aggregate, thereby paying regard to the fact that the feathers and/or down are very brittle and are easily damaged when their water content is low.
  • the application of the metal oxide acylate in the second step is conveniently carried out by spray-atomizing a 2-20 per cent solution of the acylate in e.g. perchloro- ethylene on the feathers and/or the down in a suitable tower. Typically, there is used about 0.4 litres of solution per kg of down.
  • the tower conveniently contains in its upper part a number of nozzles through which the solution is ato ⁇ mized in counterflow to upwards moving air containing the dried feathers and/or down.
  • the droplets formed during the spray-atomization hit the feathers and/or the down whereby the metal oxide acylate reacts with the hydroxyl groups on the said feathers and/or down, and at the same time a polymerization takes place for the formation of a polymer which is stable towards moisture and water.
  • the formation of the three-dimensional network is due to an adhesion between the points or areas which are hit by the atomized solution, since a fibre which hits another fibre before the polymerization has come to an end is bound together with the latter fibre.
  • the removal of the solvent, preferably perchloroethy- lene, is conveniently carried out in an apparatus having a cylindrical form in which there is injected hot air having a temperature of e.g. about 110°C, and simultaneously a mechanical stirring is carried out using a stirring apparatus of the same type as used in the initial drying.
  • the apparatus according to the present invention is characterized in that it comprises a drying vessel containing a stirring aggregate, a tower which in its upper part con ⁇ tains nozzles for atomizing the solution of the reactive compound or material and in its lower part contains means for injecting air, as well as a container comprising stirring aggregates for injection of hot air for removal of the sol ⁇ vent employed.
  • the filling capacity of the product according to the present invention is determined in accordance with Swedish Standard SIS 70 50 15. With the product there is obtained a filling capacity increase of 10 to 30 percent, the lowest values being obtained for a feather/down-mixture having a high feather content and few fibres, while the highest values are obtained for pure down products.
  • the invention is further illustrated in the following example. Example
  • the down product was a three-dimensional network in which the down together with loose fibres were bound together by means of polymerized material obtained from reaction between the hydroxyl groups of the down and the aluminium oxystearate.
