Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an improvement in a narcosis system, more specifically in a so-called "patient system of the Bain type".
  • the improvement gives an opportunity to accomplish tightness checks of the system in a simple and fas manner, and this is of great importance regarding system safety.
  • the Bain system is a general anesthesis gas system in which fresh gas to the pasient runs in a flexible pipe or hose inside a larger hose for conducting expiration gas away. This implies that the fresh gas is heated somewhat on its way to the patient.
  • the Bain system can be classified in three types according to the manner in which the single components of the system are put together:
  • connection point for fresh gas is located inside the expiration hose at the excess valve.
  • excess valve is connected to the fresh gas outlet of the narcosis apparatus.
  • the most important form of test of such a system is a presure test for checking that hoses and couplings are tight.
  • the present invention provides such a possibility for tightness check of the separate parts of a Bain patient system.
  • the anesthetist also gets the possibility of making a function test, which implies a test of the inside supply conductor for fresh gas.
  • the gist of the invention is an adaptor, i.e. a transition part or connection part which is adapted to provide a simple and effective connection of a pressure test apparatus, for example a manometer, to the patient system.
  • Fig. 1 depicts an example embodiment of the reversible adaptor
  • fig. 2 is a sketch of the narcosis system of the Bain type, with a patient mask mounted thereon
  • fig. 3 shows removal of the patient mask for replacement with a pressure measuring apparatus, as well as an enlargement of the mouth or outlet area of the narcosis system, with the adaptor in use in its first position
  • fig. 4 shows a corresponding situation as in fig. 3, however with the adaptor in its second position.
  • the central feature of the invention is shown in fig. 1.
  • This is a reversible adaptor or transition plug 1, preferably made of a plastic, for example PDM.
  • the adaptor 1 consists of a number of cylindrical or tapered parts, all lathe-cut in one piece.
  • a central part 2 is designed to gi a good hand-grip in order to put the adaptor 1 into its place, and therefore the part 2 is designed with an appropriately large diameter, for example about 21 mm.
  • the surface of the central part 2 has preferably a grooved or rough structure, produced e.g. by serrating.
  • the sections on each respective side of the central part 2 has the general reference numerals A and B. Section A is intended for a function control of the inner hose in the Bain system.
  • an extended cylindrical part 6 a transition region with a tapered part 7 and a cylindrical part 8, and farthest out follows a conical end piece 9 with dimensions adapted to both the previously mentioned inner hose and a standard hose from a pressure measurement apparatus.
  • this end piece 9 is identical with end piece 4 in section B, i.e. on the other side of the central part 2, while the geometrical design of parts 7 and 8 has no particular importance per se.
  • the whole adaptor 1 is shaped rotation symmetrically about an axis 10.
  • a bore 3 runs axially through the whole adaptor.
  • fig. 2 shows a typical narcosis system of the Bain type.
  • a patient mask is shown with reference numeral 11, and this mask has a connection 12 to a double hose, where an inner hose 14 leads fresh gas to the patient from a gas source, not shown, and an outer hose 13 is adapted to lead respiration gas, i.e. return gas back from the patient and out through a valve 15.
  • fig. 3 is shown how the first tightness check can be accomplished by using the adaptor 1.
  • the patient mask 11 is removed, as indicated in the drawing, and the adaptor is put in its place in the same position where the mask was connected to the double narcosis hose 13 , 14.
  • a pressure measurement apparatus 18 is then connected to the end piece 4 of the adaptor, which end piece protrudes out to the left in fig. 3, and as appears from the enlarged part of the drawing, section A is entered into the mouth of the mask side of the narcosis hose.
  • the outer mouth is indicated by reference numeral 16, while the mouth of the inner hose 14 has reference numeral 17.
  • the adaptor has such dimensions that the end piece 9, which is slightly conical, provides a good sealing or tightening in the mouth part 17 of the inner hose 14. End piece 4 on the other side is used as a connector for the hose from the pressure measurement apparatus. Thus, there is provided a gas connection from the inner hose 14 through the adaptor 1 and to the pressure measurement apparatus 18.
  • the cylindrical part 6 (see fig. 1) has an outer diameter so as to provide a small clearance between the cylinder part 6 surface and the inner surface of hose mouth 16 of the outer hose 13.
  • fig. 4 is shown the other type of test to be made using the adaptor 1.
  • adaptor 1 is turned around, in such a manner that section B now points in toward the anesthesis hose 13, 14.
  • the outer diameter of the cylindrical part 5 is such that a good seal or tightening is provided by a pressure fit toward the inside of mouth 16 of the outer hose 13.
  • the mouth 17 of the inner hose in the Bain system remains open, the longitudinal dimensions of section B being such that this mouth 17 is not plugged tight.
  • the hose from pressure measurement apparatus 18 is fastened to end piece 9 which now protrudes on the left in fig. 4, and a tightness check can be made: Gas is let into the system through the inner hose 14, and it is controlled by means of pressure measurement apparatus 18 that the pressure rises. It is of course assumed that valve 15 is kept closed during this operation.
  • Typical diameter dimensions are: Cylindrical part 5 - 15,6 mm, cylindri cal part 6 - 15,0 mm, cylindrical part 8 - 11,8 mm, tapered end pieces 4 and 9 - maximum diameter 6,4 mm.
  • Typical length dimensions can be: End pieces 4 and 9 - 15,0 mm, cylindrical part 5 - 13,0 mm, central part 2 - 9,8 mm, cylindrical part 6 - 22,0 mm, tapered section 7 - 2.0 mm, cylindrical part 8 - 5,4 m
