Definitions
- the invention is concerned with improvements in or relating to structure support means suitable for use in the building construction industry. Particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to the provision of a temporary support means for supporting struts, planks or scaffolding components with respect to a firm, stable construction prior to further stages in the erection of the building or during renovation of an existing building.
- the invention therefore provides structure support means comprising a first gripping means mounted upon an elongate member so as to extend laterally therefrom, a second gripping means slidably mounted upon the elongate member so as to extend laterally therefrom in the same sense as the first gripping means, adjusting means adapted to vary the distance by which said second gripping means is spaced from said first gripping means, locking means to secure the second gripping means at a location a selected distance from the first gripping means so as to be capable of at least partially embracing a structure positioned therebetween and gripped thereby, the elongate member having at least one longitudinally extending portion projecting beyond said gripping means and adapted to receive clamping means capable of firmly clamping rails, struts, poles or the like.
- At least one of said first and second gripping means may be provided with a recess or groove adjacent the angle formed between the elongate member and an inner facing surface of the gripping means.
- said recess may receive a lip portion of a rolled steel joist (RSJ) .
- RSJ rolled steel joist
- first and second gripping members may be arranged to project from the elongate member at an angle of slightly less than 90° so as to be slightly inclined towards each other to enhance their grip on said structure.
- the adjusting means may comprise a threaded rod received within a sleeve or nut for longitudinal movement therethrough, said locking means comprising a locking nut.
- the longitudinally extending portions may project in one or both directions. Slidable sleeve members may be secured to the extension portions to support upright or cross-members of a guard rail or other scaffolding construction.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a first support means according to the invention
- Fig. 2 is a plan view of said means
- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the support means of Fig. 1;
- Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a second support means according to the invention.
- Fig. 5 is a plan view of said second means showing alternative positions for additional support members.
- Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the support means of Fig. 4 adapted to use with a double guard rail.
- roof frame members are then fixed in place so that roof coverings may then be secured. Guard rails are necessary at this stage.
- Fig. 1 therefore shows a concrete upright column 2 of a building.
- a support means, indicated at 4, is secured thereto as explained below.
- the support means 4 comprises an elongate member 6 in the form of a square-section steel strut and a first gripping member 10 welded to the strut 6 and projecting laterally therefrom at an angle of 87° .
- a box-section sleeve 12 Mounted for sliding movement on the strut 6 is a box-section sleeve 12 from which projects a second gripping member 14.
- the member 14 projects from the sleeve at an angle of 87° in a sense adapted to cause the members 10 and 14 to tend to converge (see Fig. 2) .
- support member 16 Welded to the box-section sleeve 12 is a support member 16 and a further optional, support member 8 is welded to the elongate member 6 adjacent the member 10 for additional stability if required.
- a closed nut or end cap 18 into which is received the end portion of a threaded rod 20 which extends parallel to the elongate strut 6 and is slidingly received in a box-section sleeve 22 welded to the strut 6 at a location adjacent the first member 10.
- a lock nut 23 is provided on the rod end.
- an extension portion 24 of the strut 6 and mounted on the extension portion 24 is an upright 26 of a guard rail arrangement as described below.
- the upright 26 is welded to a sleeve 28 adjustably securable to the portion 24.
- the means 4 is caused to embrace the column 2 so that when the member 14 is positioned against the front surface of the column by sliding the sleeve 12 along the strut 6, the column may be firmly gripped by the two members 10 and 14 as shown in Fig. 2. Because of the tendency of the members to converge, there is considerable pressure exerted at points A and B by the end portions of the members 10 and 14 and a very firm gripping action between the support plates 11 and 13 is obtained. The nut 23 is firmly tightened to maintain the gripping action.
- the sleeve 28 is then secured on the strut extension portion 24 so that the upright 26 serves to support transverse rail members 30 (Fig. 3) received in U-shaped brackets 32 mounted on an extension of the member 26.
- brackets 32 may be secured in any orientation to suit the situation and the distance by which the extension portion 24 projects may be selected to take account, as in the example shown, of the under-eave distance on a building or of any other features of the construction.
- the device 4 may be used, where the nature of the building permits, with the strut 6 arranged parallel to the building line, it is then possible to provide an extension portion 24 at both ends of the strut 6, if convenient.
- Fig. 4 shows two parallel upright rolled steel joists (RSJ) 42 of a building.
- RSJ parallel upright rolled steel joists
- a second example of a support means, indicated at 44, is secured thereto as explained below.
- the support means 44 comprises an elongate member 46 in the form of a square-section steel strut and a first gripping member 50 welded to the strut 46 and projecting laterally therefrom.
- a box-section sleeve 52 Mounted for sliding movement on the strut 46 is a box-section sleeve 52 from which projects a second gripping member 54.
- Each gripping member is provided with a recess 55 (Fig. 5) at the angle formed by its inner facing surface and the member 46, to receive in use a lip portion of the RSJ.
- support members 56 and further or alternative, support members 57 are welded to the elongate member 46 as required.
- a closed nut or end cap 58 into which is received the end portion of a threaded rod 60 which extends parallel to the elongate strut 46 and is slidingly received in a box-section sleeve 62 welded to the strut 46 at a location adjacent the first member 50.
- a lock nut 63 is provided on the rod end.
- an extension portion 64 of the strut 46 and mounted on the extension portion 64 is an upright 66 of a guard rail arrangement as described below.
- the upright 66 is welded to a sleeve 68 adjustably securable to the portion 64.
- the means 44 is caused to embrace the joists 42 so that when the member 54 is positioned against the front surface of the RSJ's by sliding the sleeve 52 along the strut 46, the joists may be firmly gripped by the two members 50 and 54 as shown in Fig. 5.
- the nut 63 is firmly tightened to maintain the gripping action.
- the sleeve 68 is then secured on the strut extension portion 64 so that the upright 66 serves to support transverse rail members 70 (Fig. 6) received in U-shaped brackets 72 mounted on an extension of the member 66.
