Definitions
- the present invention relates to a stowage and transport system in which either a freight carrier designed for use in ports and ships is rendered fit for use in road and rail traffic or a mainly for land transport designed freight carrier is rendered fit for use in ports and ships. Furthermore, the invention relates to a freight carrier for carrying out the system.
- FIG. 1 shows the end view of a freight carrier in accordance with the invention.
- FIG. 2 shows the same as fig. 1* but with the legs folded into the attitude used in land transport.
- FIG. 3 shows a side view of a freight ' carrier in accordance with the invention.
- FIG. 4 shows the same as fig. 3, but with the legs folded into the attitude used in land transport.
- FIG. 5 shows the same as fig. 4 but in a loaded state.
- FIG. 6 shows a side view of a portion of a freight carrier and its leg in accordance with the invention.
- FIG. 7 shows a lug for a leg in the freight carrier.
- FIG. 8 shows the portion of the leg receiving the lug.
- FIG. 9 shows a sectional view of a portion of a freight carrier and its leg in accordance with the invention.
- a freight carrier 1 according to the invention comprises a floor 2 with symmetrically provided recesses 3, if any, side beams 4 and thereto by articulations 7 of known construction fixed legs 5 with plates 6 bearing on the ground, the said plates being e.g. rubber sheets vulcanized onto steel.
- the basic construction 2,3,4,5,6 of the freight carrier 1 which may appropriately vary in details, is known in prior art and its dimensions are appropriately chosen so as to allow driving of a previously known lifting and moving wagon under the freight carrier 1, raising it in a previously known manner to a travelling position and moving it in a desired manner.
- the floor 2 comprises in addition to recesses 3 also previously known gripping members, not depicted in the figure, for the locking of containers or the like, if any, the freight comprises, stanchion sockets, lashing points and forklift pockets for the handling of the freight carrier 1 in the unloaded state.
- the side beams 4 are provided with in relevant positions located articulations 7 of previously known construction by means of which the legs 5 have been rendered appropriately inwardly foldable in a manner shown in fig. 2.
- the said folding may be aided by a variety of spring structures.
- the figure 9 shows one such spring-aided solution.
- An appropriately pretensioned spring 14, of which there may be more than one per leg 5, is at its one end through fixing plates 13 fixed to the side beam 4 of the freight carrier 1, and at its other end to the fixing plate 15 of the lower edge of the inside of the leg 5.
- the locking of the leg 5 into the vertical position is released, and after swinging, the leg 5 is locked into its new position.
- the lockings are performed in a previously known manner, e.g. by means of a pin locking 12 through holes 12' and 12", depicted in figures 7 and 8.
- the pivoted axle of the leg 5 is inserted in the hole 7' in a known manner.
- the legs 5 have been provided with an adequate number of previously known locking devices, not depicted in the figures, by which they are locked into the vertical position used in ports and at sea (fig. 1,3) on one hand, and into the retracted position used in land transport (fig. 2,4,5) on the other hand. These locking devices have been described e.g. in the patent specifications referred to above. Fig.
- the side beams 4 have, in relevant positions as depicted in the figures, gripping plates 11 which are provided with e.g. a so-called ISO aperture for locking by means of twistlocks. in one preferable embodiment the location of gripping plates 11 matches the measured locations of the lower comer castings of 40ft containers.
- the side beams 4 have, again in positions determined by the standard, previously known comer castings 8 or similar in positions iri register with the lower co er castings of a 20ft container. Adjacent to these comer castings 8 are located, again in positions determined by the standard, so-called gripping areas 9 of previously known construction, which originally were designed for the previously known handling of swap bodies by means of special gripping arms.
- the freight carrier 1 loaded with load 10, Fig. 5 is in land transport, by e.g. container trailer, locked to the land transport vehicle through gripping plates 11 and/or comer castings 8 in a previously known manner by means of e.g. twistlocks.
- the side beams 4 rest at appropriate points or with their total length on the base.
- the said twistlocks which have served as securing means during driving, are opened.
- the freight carrier 1 with the load 10 is mounted from being supported by the container trailer by means of either a crane, a heavy forklift truck or similar by the aid of previously known lifting cable or gripping arms which grip the corner castings 8 or gripping points 9 of the freight carrier 1.
- a freight carrier of the system in accordance with the invention has a constmction which in the sea transport state corresponds to the shape of the present 'cassettes' but is of lighter construction, being for example a for a gross weight of 30 tons designed 40ft swap body having as a structural characteristic the above described retracted position of the sea transport legs during land transport.
- Shorter swap bodies e.g. those of a length of 7150 mm or 7820 mm, may comprise only one leg of a lengthy constmction on either side, which leg can be folded in the above described mariner.
- the said shorter swap bodies can be handled two at the same time by means of a previously known lifting and moving wagon.
- the use of a shorter swap body offers essential advantages to e.g. paper industry which uses rail transport from mill to port: placing in railroad wagons is easier, the body can be handled in the paper mill with existing equipment as the weights remain within reasonable limits.
