Definitions
- the present invention generally relates to the field of com ⁇ puter peripherals and more particularly, is directed to a programma ⁇ ble cable switch.
- EIA Elec ⁇ tronic Industries Association
- DTE data terminal equipment
- DCE data circuit terminating equipment
- the EIA RS-232-C standard usually is implemented with male and female 25-pin connectors, DB25P and DB25S, respectively, or their equivalents.
- the male pin connector is normally installed on the DTE and the female connector on the DCE.
- the pin assignments for the RS-232-C standard are shown in Table l below:
- pins 1 through 8 and 20 are always used.
- the remaining pins may or may not be used depending on the circum ⁇ stances.
- some applications may not use the entire standard and may leave out certain control lines which may not be needed at the time.
- a cable switch which can be programmed for a plurality of different cable connections.
- the cable switch permits the use of standard "off the shelf” cables.
- the switch has mating connectors which allow it to be inserted into the cable between the devices to be connected and then programmed for the particular installation. Pro ⁇ gramming is accomplished by setting various "line switches" as neces ⁇ sary.
- the cable switch may be re-programmed as many times as desired. Thus, a manufacturer need only include the line switch settings for installation of their product without the need for a cus ⁇ tom cable.
- FIGS. 1 and 3 are schematic diagrams of a programmable cable switch in accordance with the present invention.
- Figure 2 is a mechanical diagram illustrating the overall con ⁇ struction of one embodiment of a programmable cable switch in accordance with the present invention.
- Figure 4 is a mechanical diagram illustrating the overall con ⁇ struction of another embodiment of a programmable cable switch in accordance with the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
- the programmable cable switch in accordance with the present invention is formed of a switch assembly 1 which includes a plurality of line switches 2.
- the switches are rep ⁇ resented by an "X" in Figure 1.
- X For clarity, only a few of the line switches are illustrated in Figure 1. It should be understood, how ⁇ ever, that line switches may be located at each intersection of a hor ⁇ izontal and vertical line as shown in Figure 1.
- each line switch 2 in the same vertical row is con ⁇ nected to a respective line from connector 3.
- the other side of the switch is connected to a selected line(s) from connector 4.
- any line from connector 3 may be connected to any line from connector 4 by clos ⁇ ing the appropriate line switch.
- Figure 2 illustrates a physical embodiment of Applicant's pro ⁇ grammable cable switch.
- input connector 3 and output connector 4 may be either a male 25 pin DB-25 plug or a female DB-25 socket as they are known in the art.
- the connectors are connected to a printed circuit board 5 which has circuit traces connecting the individual lines from the connectors to switch assem ⁇ bly 1 in the manner shown in Figure 1.
- Switch assembly 1 may be a printed circuit board matrix type switch as is well known in the art, such as one manufactured by the Amp Corporation.
- the matrix switch may be an 8 by 8, 9 by 9, 10 by 10 or any other matrix combination as needed.
- a snap on cover 6 is designed to fit over printed circuit board 5 to provide protection for switch assembly 1 after the individual line switches have been set.
- Cover 6 also shields switch assembly 1 from dust which could cause unreliable operation of the switch assembly. As shown in Figure 2, cover 6 is designed to cover only printed circuit board 5. The cover may also be designed to cover a portion of connectors 3 and 4 as represented by the dotted lines in Figure 6.
- Figure 3 illustrates another switching scheme.
- a line switch may be located at each intersection of a horizontal and vertical line.
- switch closures at locations represented by an "X" results in pins 2 and 3 from input connector 3 being connected to pins 3 and 2, respectively, from output connector 4.
- j -s input pins 4 and 5 are tiea together
- input pins 6, 8 and 20 also are . tied together and pin 11 is wired straight through.
- the (S) and (s) pins make it very easy to buss signals onto multiple pins.
- Figure 4 illustrates a further embodiment of Applicant's inven ⁇ tion showing the use of a USOC connector on one side of switch assembly 1.
- a USOC connector on one side of switch assembly 1.
- a programmable cable switch in accordance with the present invention fully addresses the needs in the prior art for a simple and cost effective way of quickly modifying a standard cable for an otherwise custom installation.
